They're both awesome, but Silver Machine is just kind of a whole nother next level of awesome.

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Monday, 15 June 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

I was in a branch of Maplins at the weekend and "Silver Machine" was playing! "Silver Machine" was a hit single, so it deserves my vote.

Then in walked Barbara Castle with the Lady Eleanor (Tom D.), Monday, 15 June 2009 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

red krayola

dan selzer, Monday, 15 June 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

hard one to call. 'silver machine' more euphoric. 'hurricane fighter' more creepy.

Michael B, Monday, 15 June 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

Red Krayola are one of those bands that I wish I liked. If only they could've came up with something as catchy to my ears as "Silver Machine"...but it's been years since I've heard "Hurricane Fighter Plane" so I'll wait till I've seen the youtube link to make a decision.

Silver Machine! "Hurricane Fighter Plane" is a good weird tune, but the way RK play it, it's just too untogether! ICU used to do a kickass live version of it.

f1f0 (Pashmina), Monday, 15 June 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

The Cramps used to do "Hurricane Fighter Plane", but even they couldn't take it higher than "Silver Machine".

ümürgüncü (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 28 June 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

you're welcome! (i like "silver machine" but compared to so many of the other brainmelters hawkwind was churning out around the time it seems kinda dinky)

pretzel walrus, Sunday, 28 June 2009 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

That version of Hurricane up there sounds weird no? Silver Machine is a heavy trip, man, but Hurricane Fighter Plane is a whole other universe.

one year passes...

Roky Erickson:Don Van Vliet::Mayo Thompson:Arthur Lee

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

I think you made the mistake of including Mayo Thompson there

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

what? it's an analogy...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

Just a bit thrown by the idea of Mayo Thompson being in that company

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

And anyway don't see the analogy

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

it's about the dudes' voices/singing styles...Roky Erickson's singing style resembles Beefheart's in much the same way that Mayo's resembles Arthur Lee's...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

You mean in no way whatsoever?

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

plus the whole Erickson/Mayo from Texas, Beefheart/Arthur Lee from LA thing

pointless revive it's true, but Red Krayola is rad, dude...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

They're all right, nothing great

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

xpost all i can say is that your denial is as baseless as my comparison...?

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

They kind of invented indie rock with (I think) their 2nd album... but is that anything to be proud of?

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

I suppose Mayo has a kind of Arthur Lee thing going on sometimes. But Roky + the Captain? Can't hear that.

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

you don't think that Roky's singing style sounds at all like Beefheart's?

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

I mean they both howl...Beefheart has more range (and is a more articulate lyricist) but I thought the similarities were pretty clear...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Honestly, uh, no

caught me; only know Parable, but M. Thompson helped produce lots of great proto-indie artpunk albums in the 70s, and was co-producer on what are two of my favorite songs of all time (and two tracks that are going to receive huge points on my century ballot): How I Wrote Elastic Man and New Face in Hell by The Fall...

(I'm laying it on a bit thick but I think that dismissing Mayo as 'indie' is a lot like dismissing Suicide)

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

No, you should hear the album, it's a bit hard to believe it was recorded in 1967

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not the only person to comment on the affinities between Erickson & Van Vliet; in fact it was another thread that got me to notice it...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

you're talking about God Bless? xpost

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, or is it "Coconut Hotel"... or is that the same album?

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

dwarves hurricane fighter plane is so great

naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

no you tubes of it, though alien sex fiend's version is well represented boo

naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

wish i could hear the roky:captain thing, but no

There's certainly some truth in that description of "God Bless...". I remember hearing it the mid-90's and imagining it could be almost be a brand new 1995 release by some young, wilfully obscure Drag City band.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band- Safe As Milk C/D?

maybe I read it wrong; it does seem that like the howling at the beginning of You're Gonna Miss Me seemed kind of comparable to some of the more vocally unhinged moments of Trout Mask...
