sub-questions:
--Why do retro-doof band like Chromeo bite the boringest '80s signifiers and no one has yet to remake classic synclavier overproduced late-80s pop
--Does this mini-genre start with Duran Duran and end with Escape Club?
--Am I wrong in thinking this is some classic year for pop albums, or was I just the right age when this stuff was on the radio so it gives me the retro-tingles?
--Why haven't any rappers sampled INXS, bur George Michael and Tears For Fears were fair game?
--What other albums count as peers?

INXS, pretty easily. "New Sensation" is one of the greatest singles ever.

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 16 June 2009 04:38 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, this is INXS in a walk for me too. But I'm sure other people may feel different?

(on faith i mostly love the title track and "father figure," tho "i want your sex" is pretty classic in its own way.)

So why aren't Guns n Roses on this list?

they were pop hard-rock, like Def Leppard.

Also that album came out in 1986 iirc

appetite came out in '87 but didn't really hit til '88. but i agree it doesn't fit with these 3.

But Hysteria came out in 1987 so we'll go that route. :-D

Bit confused about the raison d'etre of this thread but I should enlighten the world and confess that INXS is my least favorite option of those above. I've never quite gotten them but could never figure out why. Too ersatz? Blasé? Uncommitted? Music not hard won enough? Certainly not trashy/novel enough in compensation. Maroon 5 without the doomy undertow?

Anyhoo, I went with my fellow tearoom traveler George Michael. Uncommitment that sings.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 12:31 (sixteen years ago)

good thread idea, 87 totally was an exceptional year for pop

going w/ george michael

a person who erroneously thinks he's smarter than you (some dude), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

George Michael; "I Want Your Sex" drags on and on but o/w that album is loaded. The other two are great too.

maybe i wasn't talking to you ;)

Fidel Gastro (gabbneb), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

Vocal EQ tricks, killer riffs, a dissolute egomaniac frontman -- what's not to like?? I like ALL their chart hits (in the US) - New Sensation, What You Need, Devil Inside -- sure they were all basically the same song but who cares? Was it the sax that put you off? What exactly makes them dud? Fuck, man. Before replying put on "New Sensation" REALLY LOUD.

HOO))) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

This poll should really be "One More Try" vs "Never Tear Us Apart" vs "Sign Your Name."

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago)

I've always been surprised by my never warming to INXS beyond some incredible singles ("Original Sin" remains their peak). I prefer the big X singles ("Disappear" and "Suicide Blonde") to "Devil Inside" and "Need You Tonight."

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think I even managed to warm to any of the singles.

Spray-On Food Particles With Soup (los blue jeans), Monday, 27 July 2009 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

The majority of the albums listed on this thread were among my first CD's. Not Terrance though.. I always thought he was boring.

Bad, Kick, Hysteria and Faith (and probably Forever Your Girl) were the new CD's I encouraged my parents to buy along with the Steve Winwood and Elton John they were buying. I would've voted for Kick.
