some poll threads only stand a chance of being interesting if you remove the most obvious option.

also excluded all Post-Mersh releases and other compilations (My First Bells, Introducing The Minutemen), but left in the live and rarities-oriented releases.

May actually like this more than DNOTD:

What Makes a Man Start Fires? (1983 LP)

The Punch Line

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

The Punch Line. No question about it for me. I even rate it above Double Nickels. I know it's a contrary view that goes against canon, but it's honesty held.

MacDara, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

I thought I liked What Makes more but on last listen Punch Line really kicked my ass, so I'm torn. Still gotta get Post-Mersh Vol. 3 and hear some of those EPs.

I think it's totally valid to like one of thse more than Double Nickels, btw, I just know it would dominate any poll to a ridiculous degree.

I knew someone who hated What Makes because of the extreme polarity between D's guitar and Watt's bass - I can see his point, as a lot of the guitar sound between The Punch Line and Double Nickels is VERY trebly. But the songs are still great.

my first bells!

I'm partial to Buzz or Howl ....

Project: Mersh

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

it's probably between what makes a man and buzz or howl for me, but you all are making me want to revisit the punch line.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

^^ agreed!

speaking for what makes a man we got "bob dylan" and "the anchor" and "sell or be sold" but damn i mean "cut," "i felt like a gringo" and motherfucking "LITTLE MAN WITH A GUN IN HIS HAND" make it tough for me to vote anything other than buzz or howl

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

There's a smokin' version of "Little Man..." on Ballot Results.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

The first thing I ever heard by the Minutemen was Ballot Result, but it's my least favorite thing by them now (well, I might hate Project: Mersh more). In any case, I might vote for Paranoid Time from this lineup.

unperson, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

I could not fault anyone for voting pt in this... so blistering, varied and unusual, the gameplan mapped out from the get-go

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

paranoid time, but a lot of these are good...but it's really something to make a 7 inch that can be described as "epic"

Bitchtime Producto (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

Fires edges Punch Line for me but it's close -- and combined, they feel untoppable ... maybe Post Mersh 1 would beat Double Nickels? Kind of apples/oranges, or maybe caterpillar/butterfly. Still I want to see lots of votes for Tour-Spiel (first one I bought) and Paranoid Time (made high school bearable with the loud and clear message You Are Not Alone) or Bean-Spill (we need the money). This thread calls for some prime pre-Nickels youtubery:

I love them all, and love them all more with time, but Double Nickels and The Punch Line keep pace as favorites (along with Paranoid Time a close third). It was interesting to learn that they're the albums where all three members were most engaged--with D. checking out slightly on What Makes a Man Start Fires? and George checking out slightly after Double Nickels.

Though I have to say, Hurley's lyrics peak on WMAMSF--"Faith/East Wind" and "The Anchor" are genius.

Too bad "My First Bells" isn't here - it's conceivably my favourite cassette of alltime. Ballot Result is a great collection, even tho some inclusions are more admirable than enjoyable. Guess I'll go with Punch Line for its momentum - just the way one track follows on another's heels and races to its own deadpan finish. But really, I could choose practically any of those and come up with some reason why it has the edge. (Is there really no way to vote for "Bells"?)

I'm in agreement that this thread makes me wish I was listening to 'em right now. Whatta band!

if it makes you feel any better I plan to do a my first bells/double nickels grudge match when this poll closes

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Okay, totally wasn't expecting that. But I can't complain too much; the songs are there.

and should I

鬼の手 (Edward III), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

like a poll of just My First Bells vs. Double Nickels or those added to the options already in this poll?

the former

鬼の手 (Edward III), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

I can't imagine even like a tenth of the people who know Double Nickels have heard MFB, that would be a really inevitably lopsided poll.

let's find out!

do you want new wave or do you want the truth?
