Spoon: A Series of Sneaks poll

After the release of Soft Effects, Spoon signed to Elektra Records in 1998. Through this major label the band released A Series of Sneaks in May 1998. The album did not sell as well as the label had hoped; merely four months after the release of Sneaks, Spoon's Elektra A&R man Ron Laffitte quit his job and that week the band was dropped from the label. Angry with Laffitte, who had promised to stick with the band, Spoon recorded a vindictive yet humorously-titled two-song concept single entitled "The Agony of Laffitte." They lamented their experience with the music business executive and questioned his motivations with the songs "The Agony of Laffitte" and "Laffitte Don’t Fail Me Now."

i am always kinda "srsly?," although at this point i shouldn't be, that this isn't most folks' favorite spoon album. soft effects might beat it song-for-song.

"the guestlist/the execution" for me

This is my favorite Spoon album! To the point where I don't think I can vote on this poll! It would probably be between Metal Detektor, Metal School, No You're Not, and Advance Cassette.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i considered metal school for a minute too

What a fantastic album.

June's Foreign Spell.

Advance Cassette or Utilitarian; the latter for the wicked synth textures and stuff, and the former for being... a really moving quasi-ballad (well, as close as Spoon ever get to a ballad) about losing an advance cassette of your favourite band.

This album is great. Is it my favourite Spoon album? I honestly don't think I could pick one. If pushed I might go for Kill The Moonlight because I think it best expresses a concept / philosophy / aesthetic (the minimalist thing), but I don't think the songs on it are necessarily any better than any of their other albums (bar the debut).
