Radio City

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

Tough choice. I've always had them as a twofer CD so think of them as one big album.

unicorn poop evaluator (WmC), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 01:27 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, Radio City.

DON'T LOOK AT THAT PAGE (u s steel), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)

#1 Record, but just by a nose.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)

radio city > third > #1

velko, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

"#1 Record". Because it had those marvellous backing vocals on it.

"September Gurls" is the better song on either though.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

big star is just about my favorite band ever at this point. i never really "got" radio city until a few months ago, but now i like it even more than #1 record, which i loved first. i'm hoping to have a similar epiphany w/ third too at some point

Thanks, Casey Westcott Fleet Foxes (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 02:28 (sixteen years ago)

but for real radio city is probably my favorite album ever, though this changes weekly

Always had trouble figuring out "September Gurls" on guitar, but ... capo at the second fret!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 02:59 (sixteen years ago)

"watch the sunrise" and "when my baby's beside me" are what westerburg's saying children by the millions should be screaming for. what's that sound?

kamerad, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

i never understood that replacement lyric. care to explain?

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 03:10 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City's secret weapon: Jody Stephens' amazing drumming.

#1 Record's only real flaw is the sequencing. Putting "Give Me Another Chance," "Try Again," "Watch the Sunrise," and "ST100/6" all right next to each other is ballad overkill.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

unless you're being silly, jc, jd, the whole song's called "alex chilton"

kamerad, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

not "chris bell." so maybe he liked radio city better or sister/lovers, though the song doesn't sound that way

kamerad, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

Bump.

Radio City

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

Not really terribly close IMO.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City's secret weapon: Jody Stephens' amazing drumming.
oddly he doesn't play drums on a couple songs here -- "she's a mover" and "mod lang" i think? But agreed -- Stephens is a wonderful drummer, he seems really attuned to what Chilton is doing -- no easy feat, i'm sure. Voted Radio City, but I could easily vote #1 Record ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

(maybe) coincidentally, those two songs are probably two of my least favorite on the record. agreed that he's quite a force

Thanks, Casey Westcott Fleet Foxes (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

#1 Record

Kitchen Paper Towel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City! Really close, but the William Eggleston photo on the cover clinches it.

Brio, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

I miss Chris Bell on Radio City, and its not as out there as Third/Sister Lovers - surprised about all the love here.

Kitchen Paper Towel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

3rd/Sister Lovers would probably beat Radio City, but it's not an option here.

Brio, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

Would vote Radio City over all but maybe ten albums ever made.

four and twenty blackbirds too weak to work (G00blar), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

unless you're being silly, jc, jd, the whole song's called "alex chilton"

I know; I meant the "what's that sound" part. It seems like an odd thing to say.

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City for the big ones, "Back of a Car", "September Gurls", and especially "Life Is White", because you know me, boredom. Plus the riffs and the bridge they can't bring themselves to take seriously.

Euler, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

The harmonica part on "Life is White" is stellar. It always prods a soft spot in my emotional psyche.

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

I went with #1 Record because a) it's what I immediately think of for Big Star, as I've got the reissue with both albums and #1 comes first, b) it's more upbeat, and that's what I'm in the mood for right now. But damn if Radio City isn't a sublime downer sometimes.

THESE ARE MY FEELINGS! FEEL MY FEELINGS! (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

#1 Record has been growing on me. i love it. but RC by a little bit. also, i am the cosmos is my favorite Big Star record that band never actually made

outdoor_miner, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City. No contest.

Brooker Buckingham, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

I was hoping this thread would help me pick one or the other, but it's still an impossible choice.

unicorn poop evaluator (WmC), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Alex Chilton overload.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

i like radio city a ton, but #1 record is their masterpiece.
