s/d : hip house that gets played on the radio circa 2009

so i just got a loaner car because my lex is in the shop but it doesn't have a CD player in it. and i am listening to drivetime "urban" radio right now and (on the morning show at least) there is a lot of stuff that's super housey / clubby. i am thinking stuff like

kid cudi's day & nite (the remix version)
that pitbull song that samples "street player"
etc etc

so is it just me or are hip housey things becoming a big deal and what are the big tracks right now because i am a n00b to drivetime urban radio.

you must be listening to the same radio station I am because EVERY time I turn on z90 (which is only about once a week now that I don't drive much) and they're doing a mix sessoin they mix those exact 2 songs into each other. There are about 4 or 5 other tracks that they always play as part of that 'set' but I forget what the other ones are.

no wait, I remember one more: that 'polkadot bikini' one where the stations dub in the name of the city they are located in.

Anyway, I think that pitbull song is really great because it teases the 'street player' hook so hard but never fully busts it out. I'm always waiting for it to kick in but then...

The Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" which has been #1 for 10+ weeks mentions Cybotron in it's lyrics.

It should be noted that at some point between DJ Class and Yo Majesty the "that gets played on the radio" component got lost.

you'd think wrong - the baltimore club sound is derived from early house and has very little to do with electro (no basslines!)

electro is a pretty bassline-dominated genre these days, and I don't think there's a common lineage between it and the baltimore club and club influenced tracks we're hearing

(also, i heartily recommend finding UMYO's remix of Yo Majesty's "Kryptonite Pussy." Don't know where Siah is but "I Know You Want Me" was massive in the US, too. Only thing it has to do with UK Funky is drawing on some of the same influences, though. It takes those influences in a completely different direction. It's more similar to something like Enur's "Calabria 2007", which Pitbull also did a version of.
