so i just got a loaner car because my lex is in the shop but it doesn't have a CD player in it. and i am listening to drivetime "urban" radio right now and (on the morning show at least) there is a lot of stuff that's super housey / clubby. i am thinking stuff like
kid cudi's day & nite (the remix version)that pitbull song that samples "street player"etc etc
so is it just me or are hip housey things becoming a big deal and what are the big tracks right now because i am a n00b to drivetime urban radio.
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 03:22 (sixteen years ago)
you must be listening to the same radio station I am because EVERY time I turn on z90 (which is only about once a week now that I don't drive much) and they're doing a mix sessoin they mix those exact 2 songs into each other. There are about 4 or 5 other tracks that they always play as part of that 'set' but I forget what the other ones are.
no wait, I remember one more: that 'polkadot bikini' one where the stations dub in the name of the city they are located in.
Anyway, I think that pitbull song is really great because it teases the 'street player' hook so hard but never fully busts it out. I'm always waiting for it to kick in but then...

not really standard 4/4 house but I've been hearing a lot of songs with a Bmore type sound recently:

It should be noted that at some point between DJ Class and Yo Majesty the "that gets played on the radio" component got lost.
― ayotollah (The Reverend), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)
That is actually Trance not house, bug and 3 minutes in and I still cant hear the hip hop anywhere...wait... are you trolling? Anyways. I would also think the bmore sound is actually closer to electro and not house. So this is actually electro-hop?
― Moka, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:06 (sixteen years ago)
I actually heard Yo Majesty for the first time in the radio so not sure what you're saying.
― Moka, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:08 (sixteen years ago)
ya, most of this stuff sounds more like electro house than 'hip house' but maybe that's the house sound of 2009?
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:33 (sixteen years ago)
I would also think the bmore sound is actually closer to electro and not house.
you'd think wrong - the baltimore club sound is derived from early house and has very little to do with electro (no basslines!)
― sussing out the Slick Hustler (I DIED), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:33 (sixteen years ago)
early house has no basslines?
― (jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)
just fyi "Club Action" is 10 out of 10 amazing
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:38 (sixteen years ago)
electro is a pretty bassline-dominated genre these days, and I don't think there's a common lineage between it and the baltimore club and club influenced tracks we're hearing
― sussing out the Slick Hustler (I DIED), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:42 (sixteen years ago)
I think some people in this thread are using "electro" to refer to stuff that sounds like Newcleus and some people are using "electro" to refer to stuff that sounds like Justice fyi.
(I will never get used to the latter.)
― ayotollah (The Reverend), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

the first time i heard Neyo's "Closer" on the radio, i was like, "huh, this is getting played all the time? maybe hip-house will get big again if this gar-bage is so big."
(also, i heartily recommend finding UMYO's remix of Yo Majesty's "Kryptonite Pussy." Yo Majesty mixed with Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover." possibly my favorite mash-remix of all time-- i'd mix this shit with ellen allien and hercules and love affair at parties and people would lose their fucking minds.)
― the table is the table, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

obviously lady gaga fits in this thread too, right?
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)
but anyway, i feel like this is more electro...like "Club Action" could mix in with "Al-Naafiysh" or a lot of other early electro, whereas the LMFAO track has more obvious contemporary predecessors.
― the table is the table, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, that Swizz track is literally just a freestyle over an old Baltimore club standard, "Samir's Theme" by Debonair Samir
curious how much DJ Class's "I'm The Ish" is getting played where y'all are at, and which version, since there's so many remixes out there now

also, "Closer" is pretty damn good. i didn't include the part wherein the first 20 times i heard it on the radio, it was blasting.

this pitbull song is great exactly for the reason sous les paves said, it never actually breaks the full hook out but just teases it so it feels so much better than if hed just stolen it wholesale. love the track

so i heard a will.i.am interview on the radio this morning, the DJ was like where did you get the idea for the boom boom pow beat and he was like hugh jackman took me to an underground club in australia where i was turned on to the sound of CROOKERS and BOYS NOIZE. he didn't actually say fidget house but he beatboxed a pretty good impression of it!!

Ha "I Know You Want Me" is MASSIVE in Australia. It's such a good car radio song too.
― Tim F, Friday, 16 October 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
so the Swizz Beats track samples the same track used for "XR2", right
― RETARTED (HI DERE), Friday, 16 October 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)
Don't know where Siah is but "I Know You Want Me" was massive in the US, too. Only thing it has to do with UK Funky is drawing on some of the same influences, though. It takes those influences in a completely different direction. It's more similar to something like Enur's "Calabria 2007", which Pitbull also did a version of.

I'm a couple hours north of Chicago (Madison), and I've gotten a tooon of milage out of Calabria at house parties.
Usually I'd mix it with Matias Aguayo and then into NB Funky or something.
Speaking of which, if I could have gotten off work tonight I'd be deejaying right now. Feh.
But yes Tim, Calabria over fucking Deadmau5 anyday (and I've played both in the same set).
