Inverse the last sentence of what Jordan said for my opinion, pretty much.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 18 June 2009 07:51 (sixteen years ago)

I've only heard the newest Phoenix album, but I couldn't even make it all the way through it, apologies if their earlier stuff is better. Spoon are great tho.

dat taco delmar (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 June 2009 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

Phoenix, obviously

baaderonixx, Thursday, 18 June 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

Spoon. As much as I love Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, this really isn't even a contest in my mind.

Spoon, easily.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 18 June 2009 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

It's hard for me to deny all of the great songs that Spoon has written -- at this point, I think they'd definitely make a superior greatest-hits collection -- but the truth is, I've always liked Phoenix's aesthetic a bit more.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 18 June 2009 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

Ahh, I prefer Spoon's aesthetic, definitely. Phoenix's is a little... shiny? That's a really crap word. I do think the two have a lot in common though, especially Phoenix circa Alphabetical & Spoon circa Kill The Moonlight and into Gimme Fiction.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 18 June 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

I can't wait for Spoon's next album. To me they've written and recorded themselves into a corner. Like in a Bresson film, they've cut away all the frills for the sake of minimalism; they haven't left themselves much room to breathe.

Phoenix's lead singer has a voice that actively irritates me.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 June 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

Phoenix's lead singer has a voice that actively irritates me.

Same here but that irritation systematically wears off

baaderonixx, Thursday, 18 June 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

Not enough melody on Spoon's songs so I chose Phoenix which has a lot.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 19 June 2009 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

why these 2 bands?

billstevejim, Friday, 19 June 2009 01:03 (sixteen years ago)

they're very evenly matched for me.. tough to choose.

billstevejim, Friday, 19 June 2009 01:14 (sixteen years ago)

Phoenix is great, but I can probably count the number of Spoon songs I dislike on one hand.

iatee, Friday, 19 June 2009 01:32 (sixteen years ago)

every spoon album is good or great. phoenix has two good albums.

jazzy fey (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 19 June 2009 02:20 (sixteen years ago)

spoon put off the same boring vibe that soul coughing did. sometimes good, but too smirky.

phoenix can definitely miss a lot but so catchy and fun when they hit

here is a weird gauge: the strokes have more in common with phoenix then spoon, but what the strokes do have in common with spoon is the reason I like phoenix more then both of them. that is probably a lie but was fun to type.

I'm not really familiar with either of these, but upon a quick listen to a few tracks by each, Spoon sound like they're coming from a much better and more interesting place. The whole mood and production sound of Phoenix is irritating.

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

well phoenix's 1st 2 records sound pretty different than their last two, try again

guammls (QE II), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

same with spoon also

guammls (QE II), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

Well I've listened to a lot of songs on the Spoon website now and I'm enjoying everything I'm hearing (going backwards in time that is). It's cool the way they put so many of them on there from all their albums and the way you can just let it roll without having to push play each time. Having checked out a few tracks from their first two albums on there, though, I don't like that style as much as the more recent stuff.

Two songs from earlier Phoenix are not convincing me there's anything about them to interest me, sorry.
