Well known as a genre - mentioned recently in the creepiness thread (kind of related) - but what are your favourite/most notorious examples. I'm fond of "Knock Three Times" by Tony Orlando and Dawn - psycho singer hallucinates secret love messages through taps on floor. Yeah!

Trembling Blue Stars - almost any song, and the quietly bonkers interviews.

Maw, bolt the doors and go get the gun.

Cinerama - "Dance Girl Dance". Uncomfortable verse about "freshly shaven legs" followed by chorus declaration that "None of this has happened at all yet / We've not even spoken" - UH OH!

Tom, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Every breath you take, Sting will be watching you. (Don't go cutting any trees down...)

AP, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Secretly I've been trailing you / Like the fox that preys on the rabbit / Had to get you baby so I knew / I had to learn your ways and habits" - steady on eh! "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game": version I know is Smokey Robinson but that might not be the first.

Tom, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amusing as it might be to take the piss out of songs about romantic fantasies, I don't think it's quite fair to label them as the diaries of stalkers. Stalkers don't just admire people from afar; they hassle them and often suffer from delusions about the thoughts and feelings that their beloved has towards themselves (whether or not there had once been a relationship of some kind)

Gedge's creepier songs are his post-breakup ones, where one often wonders what the poor woman thinks about it all. "Leave me alone you little creep and take your petty little dissections of our relationship with you!"

It's all about context really. Stevie Wonder's 'I Just Called To Say I Love You' might be a sentimental piece of fluff, or it might be the soundtrack to a court order.

There was an episode of Cracker once where a disturbed fantasist would sit in her room listening to Dusty Springfield's 'I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten' over and over as she prepared to torture her victims. It was very effective.

Nick, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom, and you wonder why you're, by quite some margin, the most prolific poster on the board. ;)

glen campbell, "wichita lineman"

fred solinger, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nevertheless, Gedge sometimes gets awfully close to the line dividing romantic fantasy from stalking. Take Bewitched for example. In the second verse he mentions hanging around the object of his desire's front door in the hope that she comes back out. That sounds rather like stalking to me.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, also of course "You've changed your number and my phone book's such a mess but I can't bear to cross your name out yet". LOCK GEDGE AWAY NOW.

(PS: Yes Fred I know.)

Tom, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"One Way or Another," Blondie; "I Will Follow Him," Little Peggy March; that answering machine track on Barry Adamson's Oedipus Schmedipus, can't recall the title.

Scott Plagenhoef, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Under Here" - Nick cave via Ute Lemper....makes murder sooo seductive

Geoff, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also referenced in the creepiness in rock thread, Steve Earle's "More Than I Can Do: "Just because you won't unlock your door/that don't mean you don't love me anymore..." followed by "...you say you're gonna call the cops/but I ain't gonna run/because you're the only one/there ain't no way I could live without you/You left me just when I needed you/So I ain't even close to through with you".

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are more than one may be led to think: Smashing Pumpkins "Lily (My One And Only) REM: "At My Most Beautiful" are but two.

dog latin, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joe Jackson's "Is she really going out with him". I don't really listen to his lyrics/songs all that much, so he could be singing about vegetables and fruits for all I know!

Stevie Nixed, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some Sarah band (Sea Urchins?) have a song called 'I'm in love with a girl who doesn't know I exist'. They sound harmless, but the quiet ones are always the worms who turn.

There's also that Sonic Youth track 'Doctor's Orders' which was on Volume 9 or 10 being sung by Thurston; it's well creepy.

I can't remember the lyrics well enough, but isn't 'Hungry Like the Wolf' (by Duran Duran, obviously) a stalking song?

The Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it wasn't the sea urchins. it was another sunny day. who also did 'you should all be murdered', so violent tendencies as well, means leaning towards the stalker-esque

gareth, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Smith's "Paint a Vulgar Picture" - He touched you and walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck.

Tim Baier, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, Morrissey *is* a stalker, if accounts of his teenage years are anything to go by.

Also, don't forget his last great single, The More you Ignore Me, The Closer I Get. The title alone pretty much settles it.

Nicole, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The brilliant "Sanda" by Lotion off the Nobody's Cool album. "I can see from over here/that you tuck your hair behind your ear/Sandra/When our glasses rubbed together/yours forever/Sandra/Judge says I can't come in fifty feet of you/close your eyes and shut your mouth/paste my love all over town" (from memory, not exact) You get the idea. One of the best takes on the grunge soft/loud thing too. I also found that rap tune "I don't mean to pressure you, I just wanna know your name" to always have a creepy intensity of purpose to it. I mean, in the current pop-landscape, it is much more understandable to want to knock boots with someone than to want to know them as a person, and anyone who actually wants to just talk must be seriously derranged.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oran 'Juice' Jones - "The Rain"

"I love you so much I followed you today": I think this qualifies. From the days before stalking had a name; and a cracking record it is too.

Eric's Trip - Allergic To Love..."I'm alone when I'm not following you in the mall".

Geoff, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about Tommy Tutone 867-5309/Jenny? It's essentially about a guy obsessing in a typical jilted lover fashion over a girl he's never even met - he saw her number on a bathroom wall and suddenly she's his fantasy of salvation and he (to paraphrase) needs to make her his. cree. pee.

Kim Grim, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

didn't jandek write terrifying songs about anyone that would dare try and fanmail him?

You're saying you actually understand his lyrics? Me, I don't understand a word he's singing. He could be singing in Swahili and I wouldn't even realize it.

Stevie Nixed, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh my god, Gedge and stalker pop? No wonder... my freaking personal Stalker was a massive Gedge fan. ::shivers::

Never stalked no one never. Especially not members of "much hyped London dronepop band, the Channel 6" as Tom would call them. Not me, no.

"Since when is stalking a crime? I'm yours, and you're not mine..." - some indie girl band.

kate the saint, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: Jandek - the story goes that when a fan began to correspond with him he not only got sent hundreds upon hundreds of records, but also that his name and the names of his family and friends started cropping up in the lyrics and titles of new Jandek records, until eventually the fan had to tell him to stop. This could be bullshit, but it sure makes for a fun inversion of the staker/stalked relationship, right? Or Jandek's post-modern sense of irony? Or the fact that he's a mentalist?

joel, Sunday, 29 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grudge Fuck by the Scud Mountain Boys. A beautiful piece of piano pop - until you realise just how creapy the words are.

That said - the title should have tipped me off.

Pete, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Hanging On The Telephone' could be one. I fail to see how 'At My Most Beautiful' is though. Could you explain, Dog?

Ally C, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Although my brother points out that 'Strange Currencies', also by REM, is one.

Ally C, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not sure about that. REM's most obvious stalker/obsession song would have to be 'Losing My Religion'. One interpretation claims it is about Mark Chapman in the build up to shooting John Lennon. Another good one is 'Down to Margate' by Chas and Dave.

Dave, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rockcliff - (I always feel like) Somebody's Watching Me.
The paranoia's somewhat heightened by the King of Pop's appearance on backing vocals. "Is it real? or just a fantasy?"

I love how desperate the guy sounds in this song. There must have been a lot more of these songs in the the power pop early eighties. That period always gives me the creeps for some reason.

u s steel, Sunday, 22 March 2009 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

^good call. I can think of half a dozen songs off the top of my head. "Let Me Take Your Foto" by the Speedies, "Follow That Girl" by the Aliens, "C'mon" by the Artists, "Waiting Beside" by the B. Riff Band, "Can I Take You Home" by the Lookalikes.

Don't wantcha for the weekend, don't wantcha for a night
I'm only interested if I can have you for life, yeah
Uh, I know I sound serious; and baby, I am
You're a fine piece of real estate, and I'm gonna get me some land

Oh, yeah
So, don't try to run, honey; love can be fun
There's no need to be alone when you find that someone

I'm gonna getcha while I gotcha in sight
I'm gonna getcha if it takes all night
You can betcha by the time I say "go, " you'll never say "no"
I'm gonna getcha; it's a matter of fact
I'm gonna getcha, don'tcha worry 'bout that
You can bet your bottom dollar, in time you're gonna be mine
Just like I should - I'll getcha good

Yeah,
I've already planned it
Here's how it's gonna be
I'm gonna love you, and you're gonna fall in love with me
Yeah

So, don't try to run, honey; love can be fun
There's no need to be alone when you find that someone

"Emma Peel" by The Allies is a good one, and surprised that Animotion's "Obsession" hasn't been mentioned yet.

... it's a Jimmy Webb song, a guy who has something of a track record for writing vaguely creepy "unrequited" songs.

Eddie Fisher's "I'm Walking Behind You", the creepiest pop song of all time. A miracle David Lynch has never used it, maybe it was a bit too on-the-nose for even him.

Surprised no-one's mentioned "I (Who Have Nothing)" yet:

He can take you any place he wants
To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against the window pane
I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Must watch you go dancing by
Wrapped in the arms of somebody else when, darling, it's I
Who loves you

lord of the rongs (anagram), Monday, 16 January 2023 10:44 (two years ago)

Peter Hammill covered "I (Who Have Nothing)" on his album of cover versions a couple of years ago. He also has a couple of stalker-y songs of his own. "Somebody Bad Enough":

I keep the website stocked with pictures of you;
I love to scan your shocked expression.
I know that you're the only one
who really understands
all about possession.

"My Unintended":

I gambled it all on a single shot
I found myself in an awkward spot
It was another time, another place:
my unintended caught me staring her full in the face.

There's also his "I Will Find You", which some reckon is a stalker-y song, although personally I'm not seeing it:

Don't be afraid, there's no dark unknown,
no shadow stalking behind you;
don't be afraid,
when you're lost and most alone
I will seek, I will search, I will find you.

lord of the rongs (anagram), Monday, 16 January 2023 10:53 (two years ago)

"Waterloo Sunset" is a kind of "stationary stalker" song, the protagonist being a recluse who every Friday night monitors the activities of Terry and Julie as they meet outside the nearby train station.

You'll Never Stop Me from Loving You, Sonia - When I know that you're alone/I wander to your home/And catch a glimpse or two

And not quite so explicitly stalkery but still from the 'refusing to acknowledge the complete lack of interest of the other party' subgenre:
