their big hit was good (having a pop charting hit with "I want to fuck you like an animal/you bring me closer to god" as the chorus is pretty lolzy) but the rest, ehhhhh

broken is their best moment

shakey isn't it a little "embarrassing" when you come on threads like this as the first poster making comments like that

cutty, Saturday, 20 June 2009 08:14 (sixteen years ago)

Dont like em but just by reading Shakeys comments I feel I should be opposed to his opinion.

I'm a big fan of the "Physical" cover. "Last" is also kinda great.. "Gave Up" and "Wish" are good.. the rest I skip over, but I still think Broken is the best NIN.

een, Sunday, 19 July 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

"hard line bad luck fist fuck" makes no sense, but sounds cool when you scream it ... which is the whole point with 85% of NIN's lyrics, no?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 19 July 2009 04:41 (sixteen years ago)

"i'm the one without a soul, i'm the one with this big fucking hole" - least embarrassing because it's the funniest (actual LOL), even if unintentionally so.

grocery groin (snoball), Sunday, 19 July 2009 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

Thing about Trent is he actually comes across as quite dry, funny and articulate when interviewed or whatever - then he comes out with all these cringy, un-self aware lyrics.

chap, Sunday, 19 July 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

this is the first day of my last days

^^Not bad. Never heard this song.

Eazy, Sunday, 19 July 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

Broken is a good album.

I bought it when I was in middle school -- one of the first CDs I ever owned. Everyone was talking about the "bonus mini CD" and I didn't realize that not all copies came with it, and being new to CDs, I thought maybe the middle of the disc was the "bonus" disc, and hence tried to "pop it out." Thus my copy of Broken was broken.

looooooool

mathgasmic! (country matters), Sunday, 19 July 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

i never even paid attention to NIN's lyrics until the Downward Spiral (which is when they started making me cringe). there were a lot of angsty ass industrial rock type bands in those days, and nothing really set NIN's lyrics apart from the rest for me. NIN lyrics' worst crime was being boring, generic, cynical teen angst - written by a guy old enough to know better.

it is silly to just write them off as an awful band. some may not like their (his?) style, but he was good at conveying what he was trying to convey, and wrote some classic catchy pop songs. 20 years later he's still putting out good songs every now and then, and hasn't really changed his style/approach up that much, so I think it's fair to say that to some degree it's stood the test of time.

mr. me too (rockapads), Sunday, 19 July 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

i had to laugh, though... i was watching Wanted the other day and the song "Every Day is Exactly the Same" started blaring at one point, and my gf was like "is this Nickelback?"

mr. me too (rockapads), Sunday, 19 July 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

I think his chief talents are writing melodies and arrangement, both of which he's pretty damn good at. Lyrics are somewhere near the bottom.

chap, Sunday, 19 July 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

he comes out with all these cringy, un-self aware lyrics

I always thought "don't think you're having all the fun, you know me i hate everyone" was meant as tongue-in-cheek tbh.

DavidM, Sunday, 19 July 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess he does have some purposefully funny lines. I suppose it's more lack of insight, everything's just reflexively, thoughtlessly bleak and pessimistic. Which is odd considering that when he expresses his views on, say, the music industry he can be very insightful and thoughtful.

true. it's pretty funny that the "fist fuck" line is what a lot of people have latched onto over the years. it's the one that people always shout along to, and a stadium full of doodz yelling "fist fuck" without any sense of humour is pretty hilarious. extra points if you pump your fist in time w/ trent.

borntohula, Sunday, 19 July 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

trent is probably more responsible for nu-metal than faith no more or whoever people usually blame, but that's ok. this song completely rulez.

original bgm, Sunday, 19 July 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, it would be so easy for someone to take the components that make this song up and arrange them into a competent noisy/industrial/metal/whatever jam. (fixed ep proves this.) but if you listen to the version on broken, everything just fits together perfectly, no time is wasted, and there are all these cool little sonic touches.

original bgm, Sunday, 19 July 2009 21:49 (sixteen years ago)

broken is one of the first albums I ever bought too. loved it at the time. still like it a bunch.
