- The Warp20 is a double CD compilation of tracks from the label's history, with 10 songs chosen by fans' votes via the Warp website and 10 songs chosen by Warp co-founder Steve Beckett. Voting is now over and the final user charts have been revealed. Only the top track from each artist appear to avoid repetition. Curious about how different the results might be if the 10 song tracklist was picked by ILX. (Full listing at Warp20

LFO

Alex in SF, Saturday, 20 June 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

i might have to go with "Atlas"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 20 June 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

Kind of light on early years stuff for my tastes, but I guess that's represented well on the Early Years comp.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 20 June 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

no Satanstornade, no credibility

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 20 June 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

Broadcast - Come on Let's Go

DavidM, Saturday, 20 June 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

i guess this was limited to one track per artist? kinda baffled that the ae choice is Gantz Graf.

jed_, Saturday, 20 June 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

it's going to be a bit tough to pick between LFO and windowlicker.

it's tough but i would go for LFO at a push.

i did too

My Red Hot Car is so meh

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Saturday, 20 June 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

"Freeman, Hardy And Willis Acid" is an awesome track forreals

LFO

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 June 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

the Rudy Giuliani one

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 20 June 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Track I like best: probably "Windowlicker".
Track I was most pleased to see on the list: Seefeel - "Spangle" (honourable mentions to Broadcast and Drexciya).
Track I have the biggest not-heard-in-ages nostalgic desire to put on after seeing list: "Freeman, Hardy and Willis Acid", "Wilmot".
Tracks most likely to make me shout "fuck off" at the speakers: anything post-2002 which isn't Battles, !!! or "I Love Acid", and listening to that without the video is a missed opportunity.

Guess that's a vote for "Spangle" then.

a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 20 June 2009 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

Where the fuck did this list come from again?

dog latin, Sunday, 21 June 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

Atlas. played it at a party last night around 5 am and people went nuts dancing

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 21 June 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

"Gantz Graf", I mean what the fuckity fuck?

dog latin, Sunday, 21 June 2009 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

Mind you, it's a toss up between Wilmot and ROYGBIV for me, but this really isn't a representative list.

dog latin, Sunday, 21 June 2009 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

Gantz Graf isn't even music.

jed_, Sunday, 21 June 2009 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

I love a lot of these songs but no "Arch Carrier" or "Rae" seems offensive. That might just be my craziness though.

Turangalila, Sunday, 21 June 2009 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

Also Aphex Twin can go fuck himself. kxthbai

There's a link up there... but anyways... Warp made a site where users could vote for their favorite track on the whole Warp catalogue. The final charts only show the top voted track from each artist. These are the top 25 tracks on the final chart.

Moka, Sunday, 21 June 2009 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

better gantz graf than some boring '92 era shit off incunabula

QFT

Drexciya probly. Or LFO or "Butane Bob" or "Windowlicker" or slightly maybe Broadcast.

Eastürzendes Annoybaten (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 June 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

Incunabula is great, but why not something from Chiastic Slide?? Or if you want to some confrontational "difficult" listening, "Pen Expers" or "Drane 2"? Seriously, "Gantz Graf" isn't even the best track on its EP.

If you click on Autechre at the site, you'll see just how extensively the vote got split between a million tracks that are all better than "Gantz Graf."

Leee, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

people voted Gantz Graf largely because of the Alex Rutterford video

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

i mean as great as Windowlicker is as a track i'm pretty sure the video was also a big part of why it came top

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

That's probably true but I do think the tune itself stands out as a big crystallization of various Aphex-y strands at the same time as it's a lot of fun and flirts with the dancefloor.

Eastürzendes Annoybaten (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

surprised Come To Daddy and Come On My Selector weren't higher tho so i may be over-estimating video/image power here

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

If this was just about videos I'd've thought "Come On My Selector" would've beaten "Red Hot Car".

Eastürzendes Annoybaten (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

oops xpost yeah exactly

Eastürzendes Annoybaten (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

LFO

CosMc (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

but why not something from Chiastic Slide

yeah surprised cichli didn't get higher, i thought it was everyone's fave jam.

man saves ducklings from (ledge), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

The list lacks some of my favourite Warp acts (The Black Dog, Two Lone Swordsmen, Mike Ink, Red Snapper, DJ Mink) and has many which I don't much care for (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, BoC), so it's a choice between LFO and Drexciya. I was really hoping "Aftermath" would've been the NOW tune to make it (I voted for that), but of course it had to be "Les Nuits".

Tuomas, Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

Jimmy Edgar - I wanna be your STD

What the hell is this? The title sounds like it's a punk song or something...

Tuomas, Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

not like Les Nuits is really an improvement on Nights Interlude/Introlude either. Aftermath def the best NoW track.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

LFO is gonna walk this isn't it?

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's kinda funny that NOW had to release "Les Nuits" three times before it became a hit. I think the version on Smoker's Delight (is that "Nights Introlude"?) is probably the best of the three.

Tuomas, Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

― Tuomas,

I didn't make the list bigger because very long polls tend to yield very uninteresting results (as opposed to mildly uninteresting results) but they're all definitely on the chart. Just because I have too much time on my hands I'll write down the top voted track from each of those artists you mention:

#36 Black Dog - Psycosyin
#40 Dj Mink - Hey hey! Do you relate?
#42 Two Lone Swordsmen - Brootle
#49 Mike Ink - Paroles
#57 Red Snapper - 4 Dead Monks

Moka, Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

LFO, with wilmot second, shame there is no sweet exorcist, black dog or TLS in the top 25. Utterly baffled that red hot car is the top squarepusher.

Mornington Crescent (Ed), Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

no plone???

djh, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

I'd better not be the only one of you fuckers to vote for 'Wilmot'

DJ MARTIAN IS A KING AMONG MEN. Dan Perry, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 (DJ Mencap), Monday, 22 June 2009 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

Utterly baffled that red hot car is the top squarepusher.

Cos you don't like it, or...? I mean it's probably his best known song and a lot of other ppl on here are represented by their best known songs as well

Jimmy Edgar - I wanna be your STD

What the hell is this? The title sounds like it's a punk song or something...

― Tuomas, domingo 21 de junio de 2009 10:16 PM (1 week ago)

As bad as the title makes it sound, this song is actually pretty wicked. Can't find it on youtube but I definitely recommend it. It's not a punk song but some sort of electro-hip-house... hmmm to be honest don't really know what genre it would fit into but I reckon it would sound amazing blasting from a boombox.

Moka, Monday, 29 June 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

After heavy thought my vote goes for tea leaf dancers.

Moka, Monday, 29 June 2009 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

Wilmot, but there are at least 5 others I could've voted for equally enthusiastically

rentboy, Monday, 29 June 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

went with LFO but could have easily voted for Windowlicker, the Plaid song, Seefeel, and a few others.

mr. me too (rockapads), Monday, 29 June 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Windowlicker FTW

Vast Halo, Monday, 29 June 2009 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

Should have been "Come To Daddy" IMO.

he is substituite by Crime Club (HI DERE), Monday, 29 June 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

Down to these three for me:

Boards of Canada - Roygbiv
Battles - Atlas
!!! - Me & Giulianni Down by the Schoolyard

the sideburns are album-specific (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 29 June 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

[x-post]

Much as I like Come to Daddy, I think that Windowlicker is the definitive synthesis (no pun intended) of RDJ's various talents. I just love how his (twisted) pop sensibility is afforded a rare opportunity to seep through the trademark queasy electro.

Vast Halo, Monday, 29 June 2009 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

It's between "LFO" and "Windowlicker" for me too...

Spencer Chow, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone else submit comments when they were collecting votes? The tracklist for this kind of sums up how an online vote tends to go, but I thought it'd be neat to have my quote make it into the packaging.

mh, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

just looking at my previous posts around here is enough to put me off immortalising my comments for all eternity.

ledge, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

Has to be Squarepusher's "My Red Hot Car (Girl)".

mike t-diva, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

LFO. Gies a pill!

the shock will be coupled with the need to dance (jim), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

Would have voted for Girl/Boy over Windowlicker.

ledge, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

Am I the only one who doesn't really understand the appeal of the LFO track?

Moka, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 00:07 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds to me like one of the least interesting songs in here.

Moka, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

it is the best.

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

tho i do love me some seefeel

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

But can someone please explain me what makes it one of the best songs on the label? Perhaps i'm missing some historical context? was this some massive hit back then and this are all nostalgia votes? it sounds like a slice of pretty average acid techno to me, I get it might be a pioneering song for the genre but speaking as someone who just very recently listened to it for the first time I don't find it as unique as most of the other songs it competes against.

Moka, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

it was THE massive hit. i would give it another shot on a soundsystem that is good all the way down to 20 hz, loud (cannot emphasize that enough!), or on a good club system.

elan, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

there are more reasons that could be described far more eloquently than this, but: it was a hit, it cemented a genre (bleep techno), it invented sub-bass, it still finds its way into sets by all kinds of djs, it has a funky beat and you can dance to it :D xp

society for cutting up (tricky), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i'm not sure how to advocate for it because it hit me instantly the first time i heard it. i think i had been waiting for it, having heard all sorts of other stuff that came from it. i knew there was some great source for it.

elan, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

for it all, i mean

elan, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

also, i curse the omission of "on" by aphex twin

elan, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

first time I heard it was on this Saturday night video show on a PBS channel (in Denver of all places) and I loved it immediately. I can totally see someone not loving it immediately after hearing it for the first time in 2009, though. song just has an amazing atmosphere. for me personally, it prepared my ears for Aphex, Black Dog, Autechre, and so on.

mr. me too (rockapads), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

well, polygon window is there. that's my other choice aside from lfo. not the same thing, obviously, but still an exemplary dark UK techno track. always thought surfing on sine waves was underrated. xp, again

society for cutting up (tricky), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

(i meant not the same thing as "on". not so obvious!)

society for cutting up (tricky), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

what the hell is Pivot?

winston, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

newish warp signees from australia. they did an RA podcast earlier in the year- http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=140

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

ahh cool...
youtube clip there is pretty nice, could do without the post-rock drums, though, dude should switch to an electronic kit

winston, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

also, xposts-

yeah, i'm not sure how to advocate for it because it hit me instantly the first time i heard it. i think i had been waiting for it, having heard all sorts of other stuff that came from it. i knew there was some great source for it.

^^^this.

and yeah i think i would dig that pivot podcast a lot more if it weren't for the inclusion of a couple of their songs in the mix

System, Thursday, 9 July 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

the 'Chosen' and 'Recreated' discs have found their way onto the interwebs now, o no!

so far only listened to 'Recreated' but some serious highlights from it:

Luke Vibert's take on "LFO" is pretty fun, slowed way down, but in doing so really brings the funk

Seefeel doing Maximo Park's "Acrobat" is really pretty, and sounds amazing in headphones

Nightmares on Wax's "Hey Hey Can U Relate" may be my favorite thing on the disc so far - at least on first impression

Gravenhurst's "I Found The F" sounds pretty dreamy and twinkly - really takes a lot of the life out of it, but replaces it with pastel impressionism

Mira Calix "In A Beautiful Place" sounds faithful to the original, in a very unfaithful way, if that makes any sense.

anyone else have opinions

rentboy, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

yeah, i have an opinion. i think the warp "recreated" discs are really nice. though i'm not sure what you're talking about w/r/t "hey hey can u relate" ... is there a hidden cover of that somewhere?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 9 October 2009 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this is news to me also

Luke Vibert's take on "LFO" is pretty fun, slowed way down, but in doing so really brings the funk

um I'm pretty sure it's about the same tempo - I respect Vibert but it seemed basically pointless to me, a carbon copy but for the more modern production. i did like the Seefeel one, and Autechre's crack at LFO, and John Callaghan of all ppl

Vladislav Delap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 9 October 2009 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

i'd love a swinging jazz version of 'Laughable Butane Bob'
