This is a great question. I was just talking with a friend yesterday about Prince's falsetto.

I prefer Emotional Rescue in this instance, but that's me.

Prince's muppet scream-singing towards the end of 'Kiss' ftw

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

This is great. I haven't heard Emotional Rescue in a long, long time. Thanks ILM.

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

Jagger, of course.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

Jagger's vocal is camper and raunchier in this case so I'm voting for "Emotional Rescue".

p.s. In future please don't start polls unless you use the word POLL at least twice in the title.

Yeah, this.

maciej recognizing trill, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

Both horrible, but "Kiss" works better because at least it's at least a thing he does (too) often.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

There'll always be an ILM. Prince.

Matos W.K., Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:42 (sixteen years ago)

Jagger, but if this poll had included Kurt Wagner's falsetto on "I've Been Lonely For So Long," that would have gotten the vote.

Beanbag the Gardener (WmC), Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

I don't mind saying that "Emotional Rescue" is the worst Stones single ever on one of their most underrated records. "Kiss" is overrated, but it wins by miles.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 June 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

shit subtract one vote from jagger's total cuz i mistakenly thought i was voting for "miss you"...in this case it's "kiss" no question

I think at this point Emotional Rescue is my favorite Stones track.

Kiss could be improved by a long monologue at the end about being a knight in shining armour, coming to your emotional rescue.

dlp9001, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:33 (sixteen years ago)

knight in shining armour, coming to your emotional rescue.

Jagger's greatest line deliver ever. Me and a friend spent an hour rewinding the cassette to that part. It's just so damn, damn sleazy. Better than his falsetto. So Prince. If it were a poll about the songs as a whole, not sure I could make a choice.

OTM. It took ages for me to want to check out that album because of that single, but when I did it proved to be quite good indeed, and obviously one of their better post "Sticky Fingers" efforts.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 22 June 2009 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

everything about the stones song is lol, i think i hated it at the time but a few years ago i heard it on the radio or something and the spoken word part is so ridiculous, i love it. also, important visual document of the time

I heard/saw Beck doing "I wanna get next to you and yr sister" live, and realised he does falsetto better than Prince!

Mark G, Monday, 22 June 2009 07:13 (sixteen years ago)

Both great. Jagger's taking the piss, and it's funny, but Prince is sincere, which is more subversive, so he wins.

sciolism, Monday, 22 June 2009 12:02 (sixteen years ago)

in strictly technical terms Prince's walks all over Jagger's but "Emotional Rescue" is just so weird & I have more affection for it despite remembering really well just how blown away I was by "Kiss" when it was new. I think the fact that Jagger's falsetto isn't as good makes the song more complicated. yes I am indie rock why do you ask.

threads like this really make me despair for ILM

hi dere your faith might be somewhat restored by the actual results of this poll!

I know, it's just... depressing conversation; I feel like I'm in junior high again.

Since I can't vote for Prince's falsetto in "I Wanna Be Your Lover," I'll go with "Kiss"

Paul in Santa Cruz, Monday, 22 June 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

prince wins. i don't hate that stones song, though.

next stop: NOWHERE, i wanna get off (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 June 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

was prince doing the vari-sped 'camille' voice around the same time as KISS or only after? because the sped up tracks are all amazing aren't they?
it's as if he realised that, that was better than the high voice or something.

piscesx, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

I think he only started after, in any event, his voice is unaltered on "Kiss"

Arch Cancerped (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I guess he'd done "Erotic City" a couple years earlier, which played around with tape speeds, but he didn't introduce the "Camille" character until the Crystal Ball sessions later in 1986, if I have my facts correct.

Arch Cancerped (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

I feel like Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give it Up" somehow inspired both of these songs.

Maltodextrin, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:32 (sixteen years ago)

I think I like "Emotional Rescue" better as a song, but vocal-wise, Prince rules here

guammls (QE II), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:53 (sixteen years ago)

everything about the stones song is lol

I kinda agree, this song is total fun

guammls (QE II), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

I think Prince based his vocal for "Kiss" on "Emotional Rescue." They are too similar for it to be otherwise.

Once again, Japan does it best of all:
