LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL "The POLLgles" oh my god, dude. No one can help us now. I give up.

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously though, I tried to listen to Combat Rock the other day and for 9 billionth time I realized I would just never be a big fan of The Clash. It just isn't ever going to happen. I know enough of their career to be perfectly happy for the rest of my life and there's only a few select songs I like by them. Since "Guns of Brixton" doesn't appear to be on this, I guess I'll vote Magnificent Seven.

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

This is between I Fought the Law, the Call Up and English Civil War for me. May go with the last one.

Who hid the radio under the stairs/Who got caught unawares...

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

Bimble, Combat Rock is rather dull, I'm not surprised it's not lighting your fire.
It gets slagged by critics, but the 2nd album is a fine piece of work, especially the first side. Give it a try...

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

"(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais"
"Bankrobber"
"White Riot"
"Clash City Rockers"
"Know Your Rights"

impossible

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

White Man in Hammersmith is one of my favorite melodies in a rock song ever, Bankrobber is just so fuckin weird and I love riding around with the bass up and the windows down, I put White Riot on every mixtape I made for like a year, I play air guitar instinctively every time I listen to Clash City Rockers and how the fuck do you not turn up a public service announcement WITH GUITAAAAARS

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

Complete Control.

I think I was defending Combat Rock the other day, even though I don't really love any of their albums apart from the first one they all up til that one have good songs on.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

The first album is basically perfect imo

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais surely. I love pretty much all of them but that one is epic. And still relevant to-day kids!

Originally opened in 1964 (Ned Trifle II), Sunday, 21 June 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

No "Armagiddeon Time"?

I'm going with "Clash City Rockers."

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

No "Armagiddeon Time"?

not on the comp \(o_O)/

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

i think "hammersmith palais" does everything they did well, all at the same time.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

train in vain

iatee, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

The POLLgles = literal lolz. Sounds like you got hammered on your way to saying "The Pogues" or "The Bangles." Almost as funny as Bimble cautioning restraint.

P.S. "Complete Control" easily although this comp is gross just like everything Sony or whoever has done to this band's discography, e.g., Super Black Market Clash which doesn't include, um, Black Market Clash or the Clash on Broadway door stop or the other singles comp which includes no b-sides or the execrable The Story of the Clash, Volume 1 (aw shucks - I was dying to see where the liners would go on Volume 2). Why Napster, etc. was invented.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

i got black market clash on vinyl for $3 the other day it is dope as fuck

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

Clash City Rockers, but White Riot runs it close.

Soukesian, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

"London Calling". Because "Guns Of Brixton" was never a single.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

Complete Control. Not many people can top that one.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

Shoulda done the boxed-set version, make folks choose between five versions of "The Magnificent Seven."

unperson, Monday, 22 June 2009 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

I tried to listen to Combat Rock the other day and for 9 billionth time I realized I would just never be a big fan of The Clash.

That took you 9 billion spins to figure out??? Wow.

I knew I was no fan after hearing s/t, London Calling, Combat Rock once each (and bits of Sandinista).

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 22 June 2009 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

That said, I'll throw "The Magnificent Seven" a vote because it's no worse than the big singles here.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 22 June 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

"Rock the Casbah"--though "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" and "London Calling" are as perfect in their way, and "This Is Radio Clash" is a personal obsession.

I think the UK version of the first album is perfect.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 22 June 2009 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure i'm the only person whose favorite clash song is "remote control"

matos w. k. iw (k3vin k.), Monday, 22 June 2009 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

like some of the poppier stuff like "Train In Vain" the most but today i feel like voting for "Tommy Gun"

some dude, Monday, 22 June 2009 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

"Remote Control" is great, I always thought it was hilarious that they made it the only song left off Clash on Broadway from the first album...

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 22 June 2009 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

"remote control" is great for the yin-yang mick-joe vocals, among other things. you get sort of wistful mick, then stomping snarling joe. (the sequencing on the u.s. release of the first album is funny because you get "remote control" followed immediately by "complete control," which totally disses it. and of course both songs are totally self-mythologizing. but they did self-mythology well.)

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Monday, 22 June 2009 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

I always thought "Complete Control" was my secret little personal favorite, so I'm really glad to see other people repping for it here. YAYZ

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 June 2009 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

Oh God I can't choose! OK fine, . . . Hammersmith Palais but I happen to have a particular soft spot for that one.

Fennec fox which does grooming (ENBB), Monday, 22 June 2009 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

"Complete Control" all the way

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 22 June 2009 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

I live by the river.

that's not my post, Monday, 22 June 2009 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Remote Control" is great, I always thought it was hilarious that they made it the only song left off Clash on Broadway from the first album...

Which is why the greatest Clash reissue is the one I made, Napster Calling.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 22 June 2009 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

And also hilarious that it's the only 'old' song they did on the "vanilla tapes" extra on London Calling.

Mark G, Monday, 22 June 2009 07:02 (fifteen years ago)

Complete control -'you're. my. guitar....He-Ro!'

sonofstan, Monday, 22 June 2009 08:26 (fifteen years ago)

So much greatness here. White Man gets my vote - although Complete Control was close.

Dr.C, Monday, 22 June 2009 09:28 (fifteen years ago)

Complete Control is where they found their genius, even if White Man was where they perfected it.

Sandy Blair, Monday, 22 June 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for "This is England," cuz someone had to.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 June 2009 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

I think the UK version of the first album is perfect.

I've heard this said before, but also know many folks rep for the US release. Only being familiar with the American one, this statement made me:

a. Compare the track listings online. I always knew there were several track substitutions, but wow, the U.S. record honchos couldn't agree on the sequencing for a single track except that "Garageland" should close it! Pretty amazing.

b. Check out the US/UK Clash thread on ILX, which devolves into some hilarious birth-of-punk and wearing-of-leather arguments.

I never think of these songs as singles; "London Calling" is the start of the album to me, not a stand-alone "hit." For that, I gotta go with "Rock The Casbah" (although right now I'd rather hear "Radio Clash.")

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Monday, 22 June 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

another vote for "Complete Control"

da croupier, Monday, 22 June 2009 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

I never think of these songs as singles; "London Calling" is the start of the album to me,

This is the complete opposite for me. I always think of it as the obvious single. Probably because I heard constantly for about two weeks before I got the album.

most of my favorite Clash songs are not on here :(

f u for having no opinion

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

my opinion is that the clash were never a great band, and after their first album are entirely inconsequential.

great results

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 25 June 2009 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's interesting that two of their earlier tracks came out on top considering they're more well known for several of the other ones on the list (at least in the US).

I wish Straight To Hell had been one of the choices.
