i voted wale for the lady gaga hook

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:19 (sixteen years ago)

does 2009 really need a third charting song to incorporated Steam's "Na na hey hey kiss him goodbye"? maybe we should go for four or five of these?

I kinda love the Drake song and yes the Wale song is dogshit xpost

billstevejim, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

worst currently charting single that samples or interpolates Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye"

well i'll be damned

i will not be participating in that poll but thx for the offer

billstevejim, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:54 (sixteen years ago)

from everything i read and heard about him i was expecting to really hate drake - haven't checked anything else out but i really like 'best i ever had', such a pretty tune. prefer the nicki minaj remix though just cuz...you get nicki instead of drake for a verse. his verses aren't what makes the song good so you may as well get someone decent on them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTTQCBR6JH8

the wale track is just appalling and i really hope i don't hear it again. worst bit = midway thru the chorus you start thinking that for once gaga has committed to not doing anything obnoxious and then she goes YUUURRRSSSS like she's throwing up and you just sigh inside.

lex pretend, Monday, 22 June 2009 08:01 (sixteen years ago)

What is the rap song I'm hearing that actually becomes "Poker Face" at the end btw? Is it one of these?

Tim F, Monday, 22 June 2009 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

that's "Make Her Say" by Kid Cudi f/ Kanye and Common, which is better than both these songs.

lex otm about YURRRSSS

wahle by a mile!!

jazzy fey (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 22 June 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

Drake is suspect.gif but he made a hit, no denying it

Wale seems to have a lot of potential at times, but he really came up with the lamest possible attempt at a lead single, musically and in terms of just symbolizing what kind of bad ideas he's willing to run with to try for a hit

gabbehcuod (some dude), Monday, 22 June 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

id rather listen to him not make any sense and say nothing over a whole song than listen to drake and keep thinking about how annoying he is

jazzy fey (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 22 June 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, he's annoying but not as annoying as "eyes all stickin' like honey on bees"

pretty funny how j0rdan has become a big defender of "Best" considering that Drake sounds almost exactly like his mans Trey Songz on it

gabbehcuod (some dude), Monday, 22 June 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

drake is weird looking! i had no idea

attack! attack! "stick stickly" youtube video 2:48 nvr frgt (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 22 June 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

or not weird looking but he doesn't look like a rapper to me (idk even really know what that means because rappers look all kinds of ways but he looks like he shouldn't be a rapper for some reason i can't explain)

attack! attack! "stick stickly" youtube video 2:48 nvr frgt (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 22 June 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

he looks like Eamon

gabbehcuod (some dude), Monday, 22 June 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

attack! attack! "stick stickly" youtube video 2:48 nvr frgt (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 22 June 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

haha - i actually don't ind trey songz solo singles (i love "i can't wait") my position on him is just that he's the most needless and superfluous collaborator in the rap universe

this is otm - it's hilarious that he was posited as some antidote to pop-rap or whatever and then he comes out with a song that has a. a cheesy sample b. a beat produced by inconsistent at best "super producers" c. a trendy girl on the hook which has to be like the ultimate trifecta of desperation

if you can't beat em join em i guess

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 22 June 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

id like to take this time also to remind everyone that the cool n dre beat on tha carter III is probably my least favorite rap beat of like the past 5 years or something and should've got them blacklisted from the industry

which song did they do on carter III

So, I finally listened to "Chillin'" and....uh......Matt otm?

Arch Cancerped (The Reverend), Monday, 22 June 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Why does Lady Gaga sound like Santogold on this song? (Not complaining at all, mind you but that was weird.)

Arch Cancerped (The Reverend), Monday, 22 June 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

"100 Million" is the last good thing they've done (besides the wayne/scarface/bun track from emeritus but that shouldn't count because I can't believe that was them)

both of these guys are clowns but I have a feeling Drake is gonna be huge so I'm trying not to hate him too much. I like some of the stuff he's done with the designs that go with his singles. itunes avatars. they would be called covers I guess but that doesn't seem right

I think the hook was written for MIA or Santogold and they couldnt get either of them. thats my theory

as a post-softserve rappers/singer we could do way worse than drake - the "best i ever had" chorus is pretty amazing - ill care about his rapping on his rap songs

wale otoh raps all the time and is bad at it

Don’t get me wrong, he’s a talented enough dude, it’s just so much of this tape and his catalog seems so calculated and cold and self aware.

^^noz otm

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 22 June 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

sounds like a good theory re: MIA hook since at one point he does yell out "M I A!" right?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 22 June 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

yeah he directly cites "paper planes"

i just don't really feel like wasting the energy that it takes to actively hate a popular artist. i don't bother with it anymore, ambivalence/ignorance is much easier

broke inside (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 22 June 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

and wale, gaga and m.i.a. are all signed/distributed by interscope so i think the theory makes sense - dont think santigold enters into the equation at all

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 22 June 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

ok, makes sense

Arch Cancerped (The Reverend), Monday, 22 June 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

another reason to root for "best i ever had" is because it has a legit chance of knocking the black eyed faggots peas conglomerate out of the top two spots on the hot 100

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 22 June 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

wale is a way more likeable dude! but that song is trash.
the drake song i a halfway decent R&B single ... hes a shitty annoying rapper but he made a good song

Wale is a talented rapper who dropped a really awkward & corny track

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:20 (sixteen years ago)

"Best I Ever Had" feels so pithy and Drake makes my skin crawl (dunno what I was trying to say earlier, but yeah, Wale is more likable)

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

uh you're probably reading too much into the song - rappers make songs like this all the time - it just has a good hook

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

I disagree.

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

it's annoying+catchy, which is the worst possible combination of elements. luckily, it's only mildly annoying and mildly catchy.

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:31 (sixteen years ago)

hardly the case as it's been cool to hate on wale in general for a while now

Agreed, I want to like Wale's new stuff much more than I do, wish he'd make something as appealing as Good Girls again.

I don't like Drake, but "Best I Ever Had" is such a feel good club jam and I've never been out and seen people react less than rapturously to it.

iamwitty (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 02:57 (sixteen years ago)

theoretically drake's kind of a weird exception-to-all-rules, as a potentially really popular rapper who's non-American AND a guy who sings and does 'girl songs' AND a 'lyrical' (cough) rapper with a mixtape following, etc. etc. i'm assuming once he's got an album on shelves he'll start to slide into a pretty boring niche and not really straddle those roles in any interesting way, though.

Wale by tragic default

da croupier, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 03:39 (sixteen years ago)

I actually like Wale's verses on Chillin, but the beat sounds so thrown together. How can you use that Steam sample and then completely abandon it out on the chorus? They don't even reference it in any way. The beat on Best I Ever Had actually reminds me of Throw Some D's, and Drake's verses even have some of the same cathartic spirit as Rich Boy's, but just about a girl instead of a car.
