Elvis T to thread, and heya R.G.! If this is for an overall rerelease project or the like I'm so on board.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 June 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

I am working on releasing a retrospective, including tracks from Resonating Subtleties and possibly a live DVD. If anyone worked with Jason or can help with the Discography (not sisography) would be really appreciated if they get in touch.

rocket girl, Monday, 22 June 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

A worthy project, but I don't think I have anything to add.. i just pawed through my seven-inches, and the ones I've got are all listed. Same for the LPs.

ian, Monday, 22 June 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't have anything to contribute, but good luck with this. Seems most of this stuff is way out of print and I only have a few of them, so I'd definitely be interested in retrospective comps and DVDs.

(PS if you are Vinita RG then I used to dig yr show on Resonance FM, so, thanks!)

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 22 June 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

there's an Azusa Plane track ("An Acoustical Triumph") on a Chunklet comp, "The Money Shot!" this is the CD that came with Issue 12 of the magazine.

the CD included with Issue 26 of the Ptolemaic Terrascope has "Implications of Holomovement," but AFAIK it's identical to the Tycho-Magnetic version.

(K-RAA-K)3 released a number of promo and festival samplers. since Jason recorded for them, there may be live and/or unreleased material on some of these CDs.

The Kake Mix comp CD is just a compilation of the two 12"s, so the track is "Eric Gaffney."

Mr. Hal Jam, Monday, 22 June 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

I've got a big majority of these (I bought up most of Jason's vinyl when he shut down Colorful Clouds) and am pretty sure this is everything. More to the point, I don't see anything that's missing (I'd have to do some digging around in storage to double-check)

One thing I'm not positive on are the Spires Of Oxford releases ("grace the keep it swell" is unfamiliar). There are also a couple of Mariner 9 (Jason Knight from the Azusa Plane live band), but I'm pretty sure Jason D. didn't appear on any of those.

Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 22 June 2009 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

i wondered about that, too. but it looks as though Grace was another Philly(?) band with which Jason played, and their CD was titled The Keep It Swell. "Grace The Keep It Swell" sure sounds like it could be a Spires title. but there was only the one Spires of Oxford CD, and the SoO/AM\OgA split 7". i miss Jason. he was a good guy. warm, funny and very talented. R.I.P.

Mr. Hal Jam, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, there's a SoO track on Badaboom Gramaphone #4 that I don't believe is compiled elsewhere. Need to check...

Jason RIP :(

Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 06:44 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks everyone. Yes I will dig out my Badaboom Gramaphone, it was on my provisional list to check, I know Ben wrote a piece with a discography at the time.
Spacecadet, glad you enjoyed the Resonance shows :)

If there are any specific tracks you think should be on the comp, please let me know. It is really difficult to finalise the track listing with only two CDs but there rest will be made available too, the Azusa Plane's music will live on.

rocket girl, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

I am finally getting this Azusa Plane retrospective together.
This is the full discog with tracklistings below. Not sure of a few release dates...

So daunting! But in the most impressive way!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 12:59 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

I am getting all the tracks together and I am missing two tracks right now:

‘Silver Simeon’ which Jason sent me on a DAT years ago after Simeon's accident. I believe I returned the DAT when there weren't enough tracks for the benefit album to happen. I am hoping he sent the track to a few people to listen to. (his family are going to look for it in the meantime)

‘Improvisational Atonement’ from a compilation cassette (Studio Muscle Recordings)

If you have either of these tracks, PLEASE can you get in touch. Thanks so much!

And here's the formal press release for the collection, Where the Sands Turn to Gold:

--

This new luxuriously and lovingly packaged double CD with DVD is a labour of love in memory of Jason DiEmilio (1970-2006) aka the Azusa Plane. Two CDs feature over two hours of music spanning the breadth of the Azusa Plane catalogue. The DVD features a thirty-minute live set and 65 MP3s split between 11 folders; which include rare tracks, never released Azusa Plane live recordings, an interview with Jason and a previously unreleased recording. An expansive booklet is included with the release which contains essays, thoughts, reflections and memories of DiEmilio's life and musical output.

An integral part of Philadelphia’s experimental scene, the Azusa Plane was the lo-fi drone-rock improvisational recording and live project of Jason DiEmilio of Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania. Performing almost exclusively on a Fender guitar and usually through numerous effects pedals, DiEmilio was very prolific; releasing three full-length studio albums, a live disc, a number of singles and tracks on various compilations. (See booklet for full discography).

Here are some extracts from Apples author Richard Milward’s piece in the liner notes about the Azusa Plane:

Your eardrums were designed to listen to the Azusa Plane. Leaving no electrical frequency untouched, the music of Jason DiEmilio, Jason Knight and sometime percussionist Quentin Stoltzfus is at once dense and sparse; the musical equivalent of sleepwalking on feathers with ton-weights attached to your hands and feet. At times heavily distorted—at others, light as cloud matter—the guitar sprawl swims back and forth from one end of the musical spectrum to the other; creating the most wondrous, devastating, effervescent soundwaves. It is music which both challenges and celebrates the senses.

While the Azusa Plane exemplifies the term ‘experimental’—in fact, at times, the pieces seem almost like scientific research into atonalism, feedback manipulation, circuit bending, and the search for ‘full consciousness of the hidden harmony’—there is such obvious soul to the music, it never appears clinical, or sterile. The band was not merely a group of La Monte Young-a-likes in lab coats. Recognising the guitar as an electrical, endlessly-exploitable machine, DiEmilio pushed that machine to its very limits and, in doing so, purged the darkest limits of his emotions. His guitar was like a six-stringed stress-ball; a release from what he described as ‘the ever despair and struggle of my life… a constant battle against depression and the ever feeling of heading absolutely nowhere with no control whatsoever… and so music gives a good place to sort this all out."

An extract from Jason DiEmilio’s eulogy:
Jason suffered from a chronic and seemingly incurable pain. He had a seriously debilitating condition known as tinnitus and hypercusis that was brought about by extreme sound exposure; a result of playing in bands most of his life without protection for his ears. The nerve damage was severe and irreversible. Recently it had become even more acute. He held out for as long as he could and lived as he died. With grace and indefatigable courage. Jason was open to the simplest beauties of the world and never could stop being enraged at what fouled it.

An album launch party in Philadelphia in October should provide fans and the community surrounding the Azusa Plane with a celebration of Jason’s life work.

i mean, i have a LOT of records and i was going from the 4th floor of a building to the 2nd floor of another building. really speedy for indie rockers.

That review is so sad. I had a few of his singles. On some level, very glad to see that collection get (relatively) major exposure, if only for a few days...

I couldn't be cheery about that review. I couldn't ignore it. And I just wanted to underscore the idea that actions have consequences, without trying to make it seem like I was mocking or lecturing him for his path in life and his choices. He had agency all along, after all. So that's why it's such a sad review, this was something beyond tortured-soul-meets-his-quietus, it was so cruel in what led him down that path.

three months pass...

so i got that new set, and the DVD doesn't work. it won't even load into any of my computers--it just ejects immediately. i even bought another copy and tried the DVD--no dice. did they author all of these DVDs poorly? maybe they only work in PCs (as opposed to Macs)?

would someone be willing to burn the tracks on that DVD for me and sent it over so I can access them? because i now have two copies of this thing and cannot get to anything on the DVD.

Huh, worked fine with my setup.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago)

really? what's your set up? my household has three macs--two laptops and a desktop--and disc ejects without reading on all of them. both versions of the discs!

Played on both my MacMini and my BluRay.

Anyway, Vinita sez she can get you a replacement copy, has said she's only heard from one other person with a similar DVD problem.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2012 22:45 (twelve years ago)

actually, i tried it in a friend's PC, and it worked. so i guess I'll copy the MP3s onto the PC, then onto a flash drive etc.

weird.

The only piece of the puzzle not in the comp. A must listen.
