Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 22 June 2009 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty great track listing really and I like the counter-intuitive choices. Might pick this up, even though I've already got about 70% of what's on this.

Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 22 June 2009 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

The W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band: "Hippy Elevator Operator"

Hehe

Alex in SF, Monday, 22 June 2009 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

Some of the tracks are actually wholly-unreleased versions (the Tim Buckley one, for example, and the version of "Sit Down, I Think I Love You) - at least according to other websites.

deedeedeextrovert, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

my home town gets its own box set and it looks petty sweet. will buy this.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

this looks so dope

broke inside (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

i will be purchasing this

Peter Fonda: "November Night"

^^^^ what is this?

velko, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

conveniently, this is coming out right before my birthday. i like the mix on this. the stuff i have is spread out on other comps, albums, and 45s and the there is enough stuff that i don't have/never heard that each disc will feel like a new thing. if you know what i mean.

i still would love to pitch rhino on the idea of a heavy nuggets - the roots of metal box. but it might mean extending the timeline to 71 or 72. wouldn't HAVE to. enough heavy stuff from 67 to 69, but it would be nice to include some dawn of 70's stuff.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

do want

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

Garbanzo (get bent), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 06:19 (fifteen years ago)

This looks great. On this note, check out the set by Kaleidoscope (the California one) up on Wolfgang's Vault now. Inspired 20 minute opener New Blue Ooze: http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/kaleidoscope-concert/20053376-3720.html

Amoeba Hollywood is doing something special as well:

Bee OK, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

Hmm… To buy or to boot? I've already got a fair chunk of this, either on other comps or the albums… Enough that a couple of these discs I think I could assemble in their entirety. On the other hand, a good mix and Rhino always has awesome packaging. Anyone seen the liners etc. to know whether that's strong enough to justify it?

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

Just one disc into this and really enjoying it. Zappa's ghost kinda hovers over the whole thing, though...too bad "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" or "Trouble Every Day" couldn't be included for whatever reason.

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Monday, 28 September 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

Nice to see Thee Miditers and The Premiers in there. That East LA jumped-up R&B/garage stuff is so incredible.
Also cool to see that Dillards track and the DeShannon/Byrds one in there. Love those too.

Brio, Monday, 28 September 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

I coulda sworn "The People In Me" was already on a Nuggets box, but I guess not? ...

I can't get over the Randy Newman track on this. Wild stuff.

noleander, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

Just got this the other day, finally. Like $30, new. Well worth it, to be sure.

winnebago taco, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 03:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this box set is totally fucking ace. much better than the san francisco one (which is an amazing package and really interesting, but i find myself skipping more than half of the tracks).

rhino used to turn out stuff like this in their sleep (the first two doo wop boxes are the best things ever, for example), but now they seem to mostly devote themselves to repackaging michael bolton records and whatnot. but it's good to see what they are still capable of when they try.

so what's next? new york? boston? chicago? london?

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 03:20 (fifteen years ago)

A Texas one would be pretty great.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:50 (fifteen years ago)

I think that Texas is probably the best bet, but who knows? I didn't really see the need for an LA box with the Rhino treatment, like a year ago, yet here we are and I'm pretty happy.

winnebago taco, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:52 (fifteen years ago)

seems like a pacific NW garage/psych comp could be good.

tylerw, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

Texas kinda sorta already happened. But more could be done yes.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'd like to rep for Micro Werks killer Thee Midnighters box as next stop for folks in love with WTAI.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)

This was a great (one disc) Texas comp done by Rhino.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

That Rhino set is pretty nice. I did a homemade expansion on it that's a road trip perennial. This video and its accompanying article should whet some appetites.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 12 March 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

lovin this

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

Just got this today.

This is going to need a poll for each CD by Bee OK, and dad a's comments on each track, as per Nuggets 1 and II a couple of years ago.

Special offer day at Rhino...

Cherry Red's Grapefruit imprint has a similar collection out: three discs, only five tracks common with the Rhino box, a slight edge on included hit singles, and they were actually able to land a Zappa track.

Yeah picked this up a little while back. Good stuff!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 19:46 (two years ago)

Urban Renewal Project is actually Sparks, even before they were Halfnelson! It's also a nice touch to put Gram Parsons and Gene Clark side by side.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 6 July 2022 16:46 (two years ago)

This (Where the Action Is!) was the last of the Rhino CD compilation boxes AFAIK. I miss them. Do subsequent efforts by Sundazed, Ace, Cherry Red and others fill the void? With Cherry Red it always feels like they're churning them out with as many variations on the same genres/periods/scenes as possible. But I've never examined those compilations closely, and they might be better than I imagine.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Wednesday, 6 July 2022 17:27 (two years ago)

Cherry Red has been on a ridiculous roll and all, and their mastering can sometimes vary depending on who is behind it, but if Alec Palao is involved there's usually quality control, and the David Green organized boxes have been generally great. You're correct re overlap and slight variation but I've found that if you stick to a few core series you usually can't go wrong re Cherry Red. Sundazed and Ace rarely fail (and Palao again works with both of them regularly).
