pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

I'm going with #1, given its inclusion of "Matinee" (as in I'm Fuckin' My Girl at the...) by the slavishly underrated Kraut.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

#2 for "Bummer Bitch" and "Don't Worry Kyoko"

ian, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

i am also going w/#2, because there are aren't many stretches of jammage i enjoy more than the nervous eaters "just head" -> detention "dead rock 'n' rollers" -> eat "communist radio"

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

sleeve, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

I have never heard #10

sleeve, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

Top song on #10 (for me) is the Endtables.

#5 is my favourite all round, and I actually own 2 of the singles on it (albeit the least rare) - Black Easter and Teddy & the Frat Girls

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know these comps, and I don't know enough of the individual tracks to vote, but re: #5, is

Dieter Meier-Cry for Fame

the guy from Yello?

Paul in Santa Cruz, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

Yep

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

yep! he was a punker first... also has another early single as the Nasal Boys

xpost

sleeve, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

#2, definitely. #1 has a too much of a hardcore and pre-punk feel. Johann hadn't really found his groove. Or hadn't bought the right records from Chuck yet

Michael Train, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:22 (sixteen years ago)

Is anyone here familiar with a band called Misspent Youth? I'm trying to find their records. Thanks.

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

I'm going with #10 ONLY for The Trend's "Band Aid," quite possibly the punkest punk song ever.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

anyone know which one Byron Coley was rumored to have compiled?

Robert Acosta, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

I *think* it was #7

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

Toss up between one and two for all the way through quality. One just won out.

CosMc (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

I'd heard elsewhere that Byron Coley did 7. I picked that one and 666 up a few weeks back. Is 666 the same as 6?

Think I'd go for 2 or 3 as faves. So much good stuff. Really Red's Crowd Control, Nervous Eaters, Dead Rock n Rollers, The Lewd...

¥€$ (gnarly sceptre), Thursday, 25 June 2009 09:30 (sixteen years ago)

Is 666 the same as 6?

No

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 09:31 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I think the story about #7 is that Byron took Marek's want list (he's the Australian collector who did #s 5 and 6) and put all the records on #7 to smack him down and restore American dominance in the scum collector world. I could be wrong, though, kbd compiler info always seems apocryphal and sketchy.

Michael Train, Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

I guess Marek found a couple of the records while he was doing it since Tampax and Fire Exit are duplicated on #7

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

haha i love all the petty little record dweeb backstories behind these

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

i only have through #12 (well, except #11, which is the one that's all one band and is a "fake" kbd, right?) - is there a point at which these just flat stop being worthwhile?

i'd like to find 13 at some point but it seems to be almost as rare as some of the stuff it comps

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:50 (sixteen years ago)

#11 is fake, yeah, as is #16 I think.

There's not really a point when they start sucking as after
that they're all done by different people and the numbering goes haywire.

It does seem like a lot of the ones in the teens are getting expensive - I used to pick these up for £5-10 but some of the ones I'm missing (like #13) are going for like £17 on ebay now.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

BTW looking at my list I recommend (on top of 1-10 which obv all essential):

#12
#14
#15.5
#18
#40
#201
#77 (has whole EP's by some of the bands on earlier volumes e.g. Guilty Razors)
British DIY #1
Florida
Epitaph (the all-Dutch one)
7 Inch #1-5 LP
7 Inch #6, 8, 9, 10 (not so keen on #7)
Hardcore #1
Hardcore #2

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

Also looking at my ipod these all have lots of good ones in descending order:

#007
#1234
#999
#22
FU2
#100
#24

That narrows it down a lot :P

But yeah there are good ones all over I guess is my point...

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

oy. well, plenty of exploring left to do then.

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

Should point out my appreciation for this kind of music likely to be above and beyond the average person...

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

haha dude it's a kbd poll thread

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I know just sayin' after I list 30 albums :)

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

I think because I once recommended Bloodstains Across Australia to someone who liked Murder Punk and they didn't like it at all.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

jeez but bloodstains across australia rules! i've never listened to the murder punk stuff, actually...gah too many records not enough time

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

Well see that's what I thought! And I think it even has some of the same songs or at least bands as Murder Punk! You can't please some people.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think because I once recommended Bloodstains Across Australia to someone who liked Murder Punk and they didn't like it at all.

makes NO sense

c.c. crabcock (electricsound), Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno, I really REALLY like the Murder Punk ones but I eventually burned & sold my Australia Bloodstains, I don't think there are any (or very few) of the same bands and I just remember it being somewhat lackluster. Good excuse to give it a listen today.

sleeve, Thursday, 25 June 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 25 June 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

lol great turnout

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 08:21 (sixteen years ago)

lol it's better than I thought it would be!

CosMc (Raw Patrick), Friday, 26 June 2009 09:36 (sixteen years ago)

yeah honestly this got about twice as many votes as i thought it would

pretzel walrus, Friday, 26 June 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

Well I appreciated it :)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

Played S&M by Public Disturbance and I Was There At The Texas Chainsaw Massacre this morning in honour of this thread. Well not really they just came on my ipod on shuffle

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i swung into a super-kbd mood and i've been rocking these nonstop pretty much for the last few weeks. think i've been underrating 9 - that tapeworm single is completely nuts, and the jetsons and hammer damage and le peste and MAN i gotta get the x blank x single at some point - it's not as prohibitively expensive as i'd feared, and the non-comped flip "1980" rules the art hell school

pretzel walrus, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

See X Blank X never did it for me cos it's like an inferior version of the Electric Eels... ymmv

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

Mind you Drunk & Disorderly by the Shirkers is one my all-time faves

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

I think I already had that on Bloodstains Across Somewhere tho

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

number four got no votes :(

ian, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

xp i agree they're inferior electric eels but...that's kinda what i like about em? 1980 has a skittery sorta "shit, i lost" nihilism that i don't get outta EE stuff (they seem to have more fun w/a "shit, i'm gonna lose" nihilism)

pretzel walrus, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I get that... I guess I prefer "I'm gonna lose and I don't give a fuck" in my nihilism

#4 seems kinda weak to me actually - I should qualify that - Zero Boys has been reissued elsewhere, Filth is on #77, I don't think the Subhumans belong on KBD - the wrong vibe completely, althought the song's not bad, the Huns is shit they should've used the A-side but that's on Bloodstains Across Texas, Victims is on Murder Punk, this is probably all after the fact tho, I'm sure #4 was great when it first came out

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 June 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

i find these comps very inconsistent & wud luv a suggested Best Of KBD...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 26 June 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for the one i heard most frequently in pretzel walrus's car between 2005-2008

69, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

xpost Truth Bomb! But my Best Of would not be yours or Poo's or anyone else's necessarily.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

xp well uh i mean i think most of these are actually really consistent, especially the first few

pretzel walrus, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

1-4 are pretty remarkable solid. tbh i have only heard scattered volumes thereafter.

ian, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

that said i definitely agree that my best of's probably gonna be different from everyone else's...any suggestions that'd be helpful depend on what strains of this stuff you find most interesting (garage/r&r, scummy/trashy, art school, hardcoreish, etc., not that they're mutually exclusive)

pretzel walrus, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)
