I tried to pinpoint exactly what it was, and then I realized that "white people in general" sums it up quite nicely. The mass cultural perception of what "rock" is/should be has been off course since the genre's inception.

rock n roll killed itself

Zeno, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

^OTMFM

Exactly! Rock n Roll's own stubbornness and refusal to die is responsible for its slow decline. That and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

touch my bum / this is life (daavid), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:39 (fifteen years ago)

hip-hop isn't an option?

uncannydan, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

hip hop (though it killed soul/R&B too), house, techno....

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

Agreed, Hip Hop belongs on the list of suspects.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

Rock and roll killed itself by being an inherently limited genre. When it couldn't think of any new things to do and started recycling its own past, that's when it died.

And this is different from hip hop how exactly?

hip hop (though it killed soul/R&B too), house, techno....

I thought actually that disco killed soul/r&b

uncannydan, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

White people's fondness for polyester killed disco.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 25 June 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

like all genres though, it just ran its course, regardless of what else came to overthrow it.
