I was surprised by how good an album this collection is. Remove the tracks from their first album and the rest are cracking.

Big Bang Baby ftw

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

"wicked garden" best highlights Weiland's ability to sing like he's taking a dump

Big Bang Baby

dorkus malorkus (latebloomer), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

not sure which one I'm voting for but for my money the trio from Purple might be the best set of singles from any 90s rock album.

unlucky son (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

I must admit to always liking that big, fuckoff riff in the lamentably-titled "Sex Type Thing." That said, they're still a gaggle of fatuous douchemonkeys.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

btw these are their 10 biggest radio recurrents, in order of most played to least:

Interstate Love Song
Big Empty
Plush
Sex Type Thing
Creep
Vasoline
Wicked Garden
Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart

Whenever I heard the line "Flies in the vasoline" I thought of this picture:

Voting "Big Bang Baby" -- always thought they were best in glam-rock mode, and that's as glam as they got -- though I like lots of these. Real good album.

Best STP single not on their Greatest Hits CD: either "Unglued" or "Tumble In The Rough."

BBB vs SG

get money fuck witches (HI DERE), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

BBB sounds exactly like Redd Kross, except for the chorus which sounds like "Jumpin' Jack Flash (it's a gas, gas, gas)."

Jesus X, the Arthropod Barrista (res), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

Hadn't thought of that, but you're kinda right about the Redd Kross bit.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Best STP single not on their Greatest Hits CD: either "Unglued" or "Tumble In The Rough."

i've always thought unglued would be a terrific song to have playing in the background as you shaved all the hair off your body

Always have had a soft spot for Interstate Love Song.

I liked all this when it came out & just can't listen to most of it now. With the exception of "Sex Type Thing" which I like even more. Great rock song.

DustinR, Monday, 29 June 2009 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

lol multiple people reppin for "sour girl"?

still crazy after all deeznuts (some dude), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 April 2018 01:21 (seven years ago)

You talking about "Plush" or "Plush (Acoustic)"?

pplains, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 01:39 (seven years ago)

trippin on a hole in a paper heart

flappy bird, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 01:47 (seven years ago)

lady picture show is one of the better beatles ripoffs by a gen x band

flappy bird, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 01:48 (seven years ago)

The worst single of the grunge era is Tripping Daisy’s “I Got a Girl.” This one doesn’t come close.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Wednesday, 25 April 2018 02:13 (seven years ago)

What exactly makes "I Got a Girl" so wretched? (i think i know, but just want to see if others think it's loathsome for the same reasons I do)

Lee626, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 02:39 (seven years ago)

I heard it 5x/day in the summer of ’95... and while its wretchedness is imprinted upon my brain, I’d have to listen again to try breaking down its constituent wretched parts (a task I am loathe to undertake).

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Wednesday, 25 April 2018 02:48 (seven years ago)

I’m afraid I’ll be on my deathbed someday and hear that clown singing “I LIKE her GURRL-friends!” in my head.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Wednesday, 25 April 2018 02:54 (seven years ago)

Thing I find loathsome #1: he rhymes "girlfriends" with "girlfriends"

Lee626, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 03:34 (seven years ago)

interstate love song and big empty are the only ones that have held up well imo

ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 03:45 (seven years ago)

I alluded to it here - 1993 - but there was this actual moment 25 years ago, after Nirvana had beget Pearl Jam, who beget STP - a band with a cheekboned white guy singing through this sideways mouth that was parallel to the floor - that I remember coming home to the house I shared with five other dudes, seeing this grunge band with the 70s lighting going, "I wanna make you happy, I wanna lose control, you're so very special..." and thinking great, now we've got the copies of the last reject.

pplains, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 13:14 (seven years ago)

Oh, I just this moment remembered that 'Mockingbird Girl' wasn't an STP track. That would've been a solid sleeper choice. Poll winner is probably correct.

Ferreting out the true worst song of all the awful songs that came out of the '90s alternative boom would be quite an undertaking. 'Me and Eddie Vedder' is a contender for sure.

.38 Special K - 'Hold On Muesli' (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 25 April 2018 13:23 (seven years ago)

I wouldn't have voted for Plush over Interstate Love Song but it's fantastic karaoke. the chorus is one of the great "all vowels, no consonants" moments of '90s era rock signing.
