the phrase "i feel like a glass shrimp" pops into my head on a pretty regular basis o_O

pretzel walrus, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

its just like everything on the record is right at the edge of control or something, but simultaneously SO TIGHT

the first beefheart i ever heard, because for whatever reasons it was the only beefheart album my dad had. sort of blew my mind. used to have a cassette of it i listened to a fair amount, but i haven't heard it in years. i remember "making love to a vampire with a monkey on my knee" fondly.

(actually dad also had a single of "ice cream for crow," which i love.)

My first Beefheart too. "Sue Egypt" and "Telephone" still pop into my head.

it just combines all the best elements of trout mask with his more traddish stuff in a perfect way

Come here, come here
Bring me my scissors and those odd waters

gotta put hothead on your exercise playlists, it's a blast

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 18:01 (one year ago)

This was also the first Beefheart album I heard - I borrowed it from my local library!

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 18:09 (one year ago)

My old man had Lick My Decals Off, Baby and Trout Mask Replica, so those were the first ones I had. Doc at the Radar Station was later, otherwise I'm sure he would have had it too.

This one and Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) are both incredible.

My favorite Beefheart: Lick My Decals Off, Baby, Clear Spot, Strictly Personal. Found a lot of Doc repetitive for no good reason, despite also enjoying Mirror Man a lot.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:02 (one year ago)

It's TMR, Clear Spot and Doc for me.

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:07 (one year ago)

(xp) Repetitiveness is not something I associate with Beefheart or with this album tbh

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:09 (one year ago)

Many of the songs feature one musical sequence played over and over, losing the variety and constant change that gave Trout Mask and Decals a lot of their appeal.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:19 (one year ago)

i think that's why I like it

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:20 (one year ago)

Love everything other than the Tragic Band era of course, but I'll go out on a limb and say that Safe As Milk has always been my #1 Beefheart pick.

CDs sound better than vinyl (Matt #2), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:24 (one year ago)

(xxp) No more than "Clear Spot" though?

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:24 (one year ago)

... in terms of variety and constant change that is

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 January 2024 19:25 (one year ago)

Trout Mask Replica is almost without appeal for me.

Yeah, but I find the Clear Spot tracks catchy in themselves, and they have a groove.

Trout Mask Replica is almost without appeal for me.

Not surprisingly, it's an album that tends to elicit strong reactions one way or another. I love it, but I can't listen to it too often.
