They should consider re-titling the album.

I'll get my coat.

Best ballads of his career here, honest. I'm going with "Butterflies" which I imagine will win this poll. If only the fast one were a bit faster, Invincible could rival Dangerous.

The last sound of his last album while he was alive? Rod Serling saying "What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare. It isn’t. It’s the beginning."

fast oneS

"Break of Dawn," one of my fave songs of his.

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Friday, 26 June 2009 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, the ballads are pretty good on this, especially the 2 already mentioned. and "rock my world" is great.
the only album I don't have of his is history cos I always imagined it was shit. is it THAT shit or should I give it a try ?

AleXTC, Friday, 26 June 2009 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

No absolutely give it a try.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

, i.e., No it's not shit at all so you should absolutely give it a try.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

hum. ok, i'll do that !

AleXTC, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

I remember one of the American Idol kids singing "Butterfly" (probably Ace Young?) and thinking "wtf is this shit".

Based off of hating that song and "You Rock My World", I can't imagine liking this album.

Love "Butterflies." First song I thought of when I heard the news.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

jesus christ I'm old

I mean, how the hell is THAT the FIRST MJ song you think of? The frame of reference is completely alien to me.

"Butterflies", definitely. Produced by DJ Jazzy Jeff (!) iirc

blap-and-trade system (The Reverend), Friday, 26 June 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

Listening to "Butterflies" right now. It's... okay.

voting for 'you rock my world' but there a lots of good songs here.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 26 June 2009 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

The album isn't and will never be "terrific", but "Unbreakable" is kind of cool

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 27 June 2009 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

Glad that's settled.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

Never a big fan of this one. MJ certainly had good ballads over the years but having them stacked back to back over the second half of the album sure makes the damn thing drag. Not to mention many of them are forgettable.

Sad too cuz I was so excited when it came out.

You Rock My World was the only song that jumped out at me from this record, ever. Based on this poll, I'm going to listen to Butterflies today and hope for the best.

I realize now that Dangerous is the only one I've never owned.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 12 July 2009 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, now that he's (actually) dead, I think I'll listen to his music!

Thanx for the advice, guys n gals - now I'll know where to begin.

two months pass...

"The Lost Children" is a very strange song.

Euler, Thursday, 24 September 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

And when I say that, I'm indifferent about the legal allegations against him. I mean: he tells us that he's keeping a place safe for the lost children, but the music doesn't reflect comfort or safety. Well, it starts that, with a synth sounding like a harp. But by the second chorus, the synths sound unsettling, the chords unresolved. The guitar on the third verse plays what could pass as a killer's theme in a horror film, not too far off of the theme from Halloween. The kids' chorus on the third chorus sounds lost. They are singing of themselves. The song ends with crickets and a child saying that "it's getting dark".

eight years pass...

I've decided to give this another try.
After all these years, I still have never managed to listen to it front to back so I'm not even sure I know all the tracks !
I intend to edit it down to make a listenable or even a "Good" album (around 10 tracks, I guess).
"You Rock My World", "Break of Dawn" and "Butterflies" obviously will make the cut.
It will be hard to go through all the "hard" tracks which sound terrible iirc...

always nice hearing "You Rock My World", the one MJ single that wasn't overexposed after 2009

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 13:13 (six years ago)

Yeah for such a major act, and especially after his death, this album remains very obscure...

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 13:22 (six years ago)

Were there some b-sides or other tracks around that album that would be worth listening to ?

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 13:23 (six years ago)

Oh I didn’t know B.I.G and Slash were on this !
« Don’t Walk Away » is pretty great...
I think my edit version will be better than expected.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 17:16 (six years ago)

Also there moments on the album when his voice is deeper/more masculine than on any other albums. Surprising.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 17:19 (six years ago)

agreed this could be edited down into a really nice record, though i always struggle to remember what tracks i actually dislike. "cry," definitely hate "cry"

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 17:20 (six years ago)

Ah « Cry » is the Lion King track !
