I want something...

I've been ripping my CDs to flac and currently have 8,000 albums available on my wireless network via Squeezebox. I have a wantlist pages long. Yet I still crave something that I'm not sure exists. It's a sickness, I know.

I'm sure many of you have it. Let's use this to try to describe what new/old stuff we're craving, and make recommendations.

At the moment, I'm thinking a cross between Peter Gabriel circa 1980 and Gary Numan...

I want Mark E. Smith to dump the current band, hook up w/ the Magic Band and do an entire album of Charlie Feathers covers.

Actually just another Von Sudenfed record would make me happy

Some magical, newly unearthed Bo Diddley (or diddley-esque) record from the early 60's era or so with over the top reverbed/echoplexed guitars, one or two chord jams that chug along for half a side just getting nuttier and louder (like a whole album of stuff sounding like his version of "Hey Bo Diddley" from the Big TNT Show).

Every once in awhile I have a dream where something like this shows up, and I'm listening to it and thinking "Holy shit! How had I never heard of this record before?" and then I wake up and wish I'd remembered how the record went.

Actually the Hawklords - 25 Years (1978) album kind of hit the spot, sounding more like early Ultravox and Tubeway Army than Hawkwind! I also just listened to Numan's I, Assassin for the first time, supposedly his last great album, though some fans are sure to disagree.

As for the others, none of it probably exists yet, but they're certainly great ideas for future bands/projects. Musicians needing ideas, take note!

The use of fretless bass on I, Assassin kind of bugs me. It reminded me of Japan's Tin Drum, and the liner notes verified that it was a big influence. I could do without the fretless on that album too.
