At this point in time, is it possible to be a rock band and NOT derivative?

I was listening to Wire today and I thought about how Robbe-Grillet was advocating new kinds of fiction and that Wire were sort of trying to do something like that, make new kinds of rock, and trying to make the listener meet them half way . . .

And I thought: rock musicians have definitely not tried to do this very much. What was it, "French Film Blurred"? I was listening to that and thinking of all the weird components to it and how thoughtful it is, and how much of the album was deliberately not comfortable and made of disparate parts and just really, really interesting. And I said before: THOUGHTFUL! Whatever, challops, right, but it just seems most people aren't really trying.

And when are we going to see some new kind of pop music, while we're at it? Has there been anything not completely derivative or some kind of permutation since hip hop and disco/techno?

I was listening to Wire today and...

I'm sure there are lots of bands around who are as NOT derivative as Wire... they might not be any good, but that's not the point

the band sejayno comes to mind- they have records with songs / singing / musical "parts" and such but I really can't compare what they do to anyone. check out their new LP on ehse and you will see what I mean. It's not nostalgic but it's not futuristic either, it's just, um, sideways from everything.

The first time I heard Slovenly in high school I kind of felt this way about them, but there is *nothing* that these bands have in common aside from a sui-generis oddity.

Derivative implies a lower order. If I like some band, they're "influenced" by the Ramones, if I don't like some band, they're "derivative" of the Ramones. Since I'm the only man alive with perfect music taste, it's fairly inevitable that someone else will wrongly call bands I like "derivative" and fail to note how "derivative" bands I don't like are.

I have solved your problem. Please return to gifs and challops.
