Pick a song from the 1975 TOTP list - find it on you tube, listen to it and then come back here and talk about it

In the glam thread, I mentioned a website I'd stumbled over listing the appearances on top of the pops from various years.

Here it is (scroll down near the bottom for 1975)

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/e.watkins/musictv/totp_full_shows.htm

Anyway, could folks pick a track listed, get a listen to it somehow (you tube seems to have most of them) and then come back here and tell us about it - its more fun if you pick one you've never heard before, but hey, do what you feel. (other years can go their their own thread though)

I picked: Linda Carr & The Love Squad – Highwire (video)

I'd never heard of it at all, I thought it might actually be her who was wonderwoman doing a novelty disco track (I know, I know, it's Linda Carter).

Anyway it's not, its a fantastic Northern Soul tune. Don't know is its a re-issue from the 60s that resurfaced with the first wigan boom and I don't know anything about Carr.

It sounded very familiar though, and I thought I might have got it on a CD compo but a good browse couldn't find it, but then it struck me that M People ripped it off for their 'one night in heaven', (did everyone already know this?) anyway don't let that M People comparison put you off, Highwire is a cracking tune.

Gilbert O'Sullivan - I Don't Love You, But I Think I Like You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeaGamBdDzs
I wasn't familiar with this song - only really knew Alone Again, Clair, and Get Down - but this is pretty good in a football-crowd-singalong kind of way. Easy to forget how big O'Sullivan was at that time, particularly in Germany I think, which explains the enthusiastic "disco" audience and the expense of a full band where most people had to mime.

Also the lyrics predict Right Said Fred's pretty much awful album track "I Love You But I Don't Like You"

snoball, the bit where he gets up and does 'the bump' with an audience member is a classic.

How come todays pop starts won't destroy their dignity like that?

Also, taking sides: should Irish people have afros Y/N

Sandy Blair, Friday, 3 July 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

The woman looks more like she's doing the funky chicken. And after dressing as a schoolboy, doing the bump was probably a step up in the dignity stakes for GO'S. His perm is a bit to flat to be considered an afro. and I suppose he gets let off according to the "not as bad as Art Garfunkel's" rule.

I mean flat on top - it's almost like he's tried to centre part a perm.

Oh and as a possessor of "Irish style" hair myself, I'd go with just about any style that would allow me control over the unruly mop. In '75 no-one would have looked twice at that hairdo (various comedians sported far far worse) so I can understand entirely why Gilbert went for it.

Sandy you're trying to drive me bananas. I want whatever record you're describing.

Had a self-made bunch of Gilbert O'Sullivan tunes on a CD-R a couple of years ago. Wasn't very eventful.

which was a bit synth-cheese-tastic for my tastes (Bimble), Friday, 3 July 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Arbitrarily chose Procul Harum - Pandora's Box

Honestly this is a pretty generic mid-70s stoner rock single, almost more of a byproduct than a product of its era. I guess what saves it is that the singer is pretty strong. Melody not completely forgettable but not compelling either.

Ooops sorry I didn't post the you tube link to the song I was describing

Well, that helps a lot! Thanks!

It's a common theme. See also: Rico Suave.
