Pointer Sisters Greatest Hits Poll

They might have been even better had they hooked up with some Rich Harrison type earlier in their career (instead they got Richard Perry). I can go without hearing "Neutron Dance" and "I'm So Excited" again, but "Dare Me" is a surprisingly vital late single.

'he's so shy' for the modulation at the end of the kybd solo

Julio Afrokeluchie, Thursday, 9 July 2009 02:45 (sixteen years ago)

Gotta be "Fire" (though I'll admit to still loving "Jump").

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 02:57 (sixteen years ago)

"Slow Hand" vs "Automatic" for me.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 July 2009 02:59 (sixteen years ago)

"Automatic," just ahead of "He's So Shy," "Dare Me" and ... I guess the rest of Break Out.

bad crack (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 July 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)

voted automatic. but everytime i hear it, it think dudes are singing it

A. Roddick City (jaxon), Thursday, 9 July 2009 04:00 (sixteen years ago)

The absent "Yes We Can Can" might've gotten my vote, but "Automatic" will do nicely enough

Stop wishing death on people just for the cool thread titles (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 9 July 2009 05:44 (sixteen years ago)

automatic is the only song of theirs i can do a not-terrible karaoke rendition of, so that one

all we hear is lady o'gaga (donna rouge), Thursday, 9 July 2009 06:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sure I haven't heard all of these. Most people know He's So Shy is my fave. Looking at this poll makes me think I should have gotten a greatest hits rather than try to digest their albums one by one. I think I burned out on them a little too fast, but then that's the case with a lot of things I try to get into these days.

Enchanted (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 9 July 2009 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic is so fun, have to go listen to it now

sciolism, Thursday, 9 July 2009 08:38 (sixteen years ago)

For years I thought it was DeBarge!

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 July 2009 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

"automatic" over "slow hand" and "jump"

one year passes...

"Slow Hand" is so perfect.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

I'm more into earlier than later Pointers; I could pretty much listen to "Yes We Can Can" on a loop for half an hour. Also, the unstoppable funk of this:

I would have probably voted for Fire but I'm So Excited getting zero votes is criminal

Bee OK, Sunday, 18 June 2023 02:35 (two years ago)

Some of their '70s shit is so astoundingly funky:

The 7" mix of that is somehow even more powerful, while being a fair bit shorter. I used to have daydreams of Mark Lanegan covering it in some grimy industrial funk-grunge manner, a la his Bubblegum LP. Feel the gospel apocalypse vibe of the lyric would suit him.

Steppin' is probably my favourite Pointer Sisters album, uneven like many of their best records - I never really want to hear their old timey songs, but How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side) is like some intense Norman Whitfield epic, all slow build and tonnes of space. And Chainey Do is fierce as fuck - that constantly shifting rhythm, that rib-shaking, razor-sharp tribal funk.

Not to mention this sublime Stevie Wonder collab, which has that dreamy, other-worldly vibe of the ballads off Fulfillingness First Finale

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd3PZ67dI0Q

This is off the next album, another Stevie collaboration, and in that amazingly sweet Latin funk pocket he was in for a fair chunk of the 70s. The Pointers' band was just ridiculously tight and loose back then, absolutely the match for their vocals.
