FILA BRAZILLIA ALBUMS POLL

i'm sure we'll have about five votes on this, but after yesterday's discussion on the lindstrom thread i've been listening to their discography. they couldn't be more underrated or overlooked right now. VERY RELEVANT.

the later albums i assume will get ignored, but i don't think they put out a single bad record.

I had no idea they put out so many albums!

I really only know their remix of Lamb's "Cotton Wool" but I always meant to look into them more.

her performance (ie, her pubes) stood out for me (HI DERE), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

i'm holding off on voting until i'm a little more comfortable, but right now i'm leaning towards luck be a weirdo tonight, whose "van allens belt" is a wonderful re-working of can's moonshake

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

total krautrock dance workout

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

proto-nu-balearic space disco beardo progenitors

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

yes they go well with a side of weed

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

maim that tune, mess and power clown are all amazing albums too

i might go for "maim that tune" because it was such a headfuck at the time. i don't recall having heard anything that sounded like that at the time, whereas by the time the others rolled around i was like, oh yeah, more fila brazillia.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

i had the same thing too. got the rabbit one, then worked backwards, but that one stayed my fav

just sayin, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

probably Power Clown for me. "It's alright for you you've got loads of Picassos...".

the first 7 all have a couple of things i love (and a couple of things pretty annoying) and so i just ended up making my own comps, playlists etc. also great is their early house track 'Chemistry' - tracked that down on 12" a few years back. i'll post my POXX later maybe.

Jump Leads was terrible iirc but recently heard some of Brumal that sounded OK, having ignored it at the time.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

allmusic sez: "Even more experimentally hyper than on previous LPs, Fila Brazillia cross-fertilize styles with abandon on Luck Be a Weirdo Tonight, resulting in such genre-bending as prog-blaxploitation and space-disco, as well as more straight-ahead fusions like lounge-disco."

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

i really liked jump leads. maybe too much male diva vox on that one, but "we build arks" was a treat.

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

could maybe poll their song titles as well.

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

the 'Planet Rock' bit on 'Here Comes Pissy Willy' might be favourite FB moment ever. and i want Rich Harrison to sample 'Her Majesty's Hokey-Cokey'.

also please remind me the funk track sampled on 'The Bugs Will Bite'

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

almost embarrassing typing out these track names sometimes

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

"lieutenant gingivitis shit" lol

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

"Space Hearse" = dope

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

power clown may win in the end

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

power clown was the 1st one I heard and was the soundtrack to my first road trip to the Southwest, so it's got a greater sentimental pull than the others. (plus it is just a really good album). touch of cloth is 2nd, maim that tune 3rd. BMG and Luck get conflated in my mind, and both have some pretty great tracks.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

'old codes new chaos' i know and love. i didnt even know that they were still releasing albums!

Michael B, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

they aren't.

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

the biggest "whoa, small world!" moment i've prob ever had was with these 2 guys from Hull who came to Chicago for work training, and my friend became friendly with them and we were showing them around. Driving around, I had on a mix cd of various downtempo shit, and one of the dudes complimented it and we got to talking about groups we both like. I named Fila, and he was astounded. He worked with the son of one of the guys in Fila (is that possible? are they that old? this was like 5 years ago), and had no idea that they were known outside of Hull, let alone all the way in Midwest US.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

I liked everything until Jump Leads. Will be voting for one of the first five, but going to relisten before I do.

Maim That Tune is my fav. but I love them all up to Luck Be A Weirdo. Solid Doctor and Heights of Abraham both have some great cuts as well.

Subtle Body, Extract of Pineal Gland, Harmonicas are Shite, Slacker, Leggy, Zed and 2 L's....each one is a classic.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

zed and 2 l's is fucking bliss

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

I was an obsessive Pork Recordings collector until about 99/00 when they seemed to have lost a bit of quality control.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

Is there another Solid Doctor other than "How Bout Some Ether" to check for?

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

zed and 2 l's is fucking bliss

Enigma albums poll next?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

you don't smoke weed to enigma... or do you?

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

Can't find my Heights of Abraham cd anywhere, that was the best of the spin offs iirc

I am using your worlds, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, Beats Means Highs (i think) was pretty spectacular. Need to consult Discogs.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

beats means highs was solid doctor

cutty, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

yes, i was replying to Granny Dainger

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

Yay for Hull's finest!

I'm probly voting Luck Be a Weirdo but I wanna think about it. There are no bad ones.

Bo'para Selecta! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

Love love love Fila, glad to see them getting some props. For me its, "A touch of cloth"... though i love everything up through "jump leads" especially Luck be a wierdo and Mess

dsb, Thursday, 9 July 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

This just in...
Nokia used one of Fila's tracks from "Jump Leads" in a commercial promoting their N97 smartphone...

Mess or Maim... (for Zed and 2Ls largely)

But all their output between '95 and '99 is sublime

The last three were so poor - too much shitty weed and other twat dust is my guess

They still create.here's one example

http://www.steeltiger.co.uk/php/cutler.php

Not heard it myself so can't comment

Granny Dainger ^^^ they are in their forties and have kids; one set of kids are not of working age. Never realised the Hull/Chicago crossover was so pronounced.Even I know folk in Chicago It's probably the best city I have visited

Anybody recall the rocking Greg Dulli episode and Steve Cobby's involvement in remixing the Twilight Singers first?

Rocking Greg made quite an, erm, impact in Hull at the time. Allegedly
