Ok, I admit I have used the balearic word so more people would click on this... "Deadbeat Summer" isn't that far away though, it actually sounds pretty close to Air France, but on a 4-track recorder.

not balearic tho, you should be ashamed of yourself

I know :-)

This one is even lesser balearic I'm afraid :

i'd like the mods to edit the title
― cutty, Saturday, 11 July 2009 14:53 (sixteen years ago)
I knew I would go to hell with this.
― Jamie Harley (Snowballing), Saturday, 11 July 2009 14:58 (sixteen years ago)
For my defence, I was actually pretty sincere about Deadbeat Summer having some kind of a balearic vibe (in an Air France way...). There's also other acts like Ducktails or Forest Swords that share that same kind of sound.
― Jamie Harley (Snowballing), Saturday, 11 July 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)
But if you find it really disturbing, I have obviously nothing against the mods editing the title.

a neon indian thread, but nothing for james ferraro
― kamerad, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 03:48 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ kinda wonder why he and spencer clark's solo stuff doesn't get more appreciation in general, but tons of stuff on the pacific city and new age tape labels would definitely appeal to fans of ducktails, etc.
especially the stuff under ferraro's actual name, lamborghini crystal, certain monopoly child star searchers albums, edward flex, k2, tons more i'm sure

the story about the dude being depressed & playing NES & smoking weed
k i know this keeps getting brought up but, isn't this every non-granolafolk indie artist's "backstory" right now? it's all just depressed dudes smoking weed, playing old video games, watching days of thunder, etc..
but anyway, this album is pretty dope, some of it kinda reminds me of Todd era todd rundgren. i am still struggling w/indie vocals these days but the vox here are only mildly annoying.
― guammls (QE II), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)
Listened to this finally last night while drifting off to sleep. It sounded like an old Billy Ocean tape playing on a boombox through a couple of pillows. I kind of like it.

― corrine bailey the chef (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)
Man, I don't know, I was feeling Tanlines' remix work, but that new EP isn't really sticking with me. Maybe a few more listens...I have somewhat of a hard time seeing the Tough Alliance comparisons, but that's because I <3 TTA to death.
― larry_fitzmaurice, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
the synth line in "real life" is like, just incredibly tta to me -- the vocals not so much tho
― corrine bailey the chef (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I guess I could see that, but for me what separates TTA from something like, say, Wham, is the vocals (so distinctive).

haha, this guy's list of influences sounds like my top ten on last fm
The songs are organized like a pop song but still disorganized and experimental enough that you can listen to it as a means of selfless possession. The music that I love to listen to is twofold-- there's noisy soundscape-y stuff like Black Dice and Alvin Lucier all the way to, like, D'Angelo and The-Dream. I always wanted to hear them at the same time.

― calstars, Sunday, 25 October 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)
Really enjoying this. Jammed with ideas (more impressively given the original version of the album was apparently lost) albeit all within a specific aesthetic so he probably won't be expanding his fanbase and will almost certainly be left off year-end lists. Can't wait to hear a lot of this live. His vocals are noticeably better too (altho the bar was pretty typically low there).
Despite being an interlude that bass drop on 'Bozo' is one of the best moments. 'Techno Clique' also great.

Now that I've had time to listen to this multiple times, I have to say it's one of this year's greatest disappointments for me. There's a lot going on, musically-speaking, but nothing coalesces to an appealing whole. I'm more than willing this a personal defect, but fuck it, I'm upset nonetheless.

New album 'World Of Hassle' out in a few months, now just as Alan Palomo. Tracks released so far offer more (or at least as much) glitz but less grit than previous NI work/aesthetic. Nice to see he's still making these kinds of videos though.

― ufo, Friday, 22 September 2023 12:38 (two years ago)
I like this album but find the lyrics on it kind of obnoxious. The schtick worked for me on his previous record, but it feels clumsier and goofier here. Especially that first track... I guess partly it's the delivery too, the silly voice he's doing.
But you know what? The music's good enough for me to get over it. Especially Stay-At-Home DJ, that's the standout for me so far.
― OneSecondBefore, Friday, 22 September 2023 13:02 (two years ago)
