yep

Bizarro Morbius (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

Not that I expect it to win or anything, obv.

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

OK, not really. Ms. Jackson.

ENBB, Monday, 13 July 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

"Bootylicious" over "Ms Jackson."

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

oh slide "U Remind Me" between MJB and Janet, I guess

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:33 (sixteen years ago)

"U Got It Bad" is tied with "We Belong Together" for best inescapable R&B radio ballad of the decade imo

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

Not many, is there?

Mark G, Monday, 13 July 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

it's surprising there are that many, frankly. the multiple-months No. 1 is well established by '01.

Matos W.K., Monday, 13 July 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

nothing held longer than 7 weeks ("All For You", which never seemed that huge)

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

do we count "umbrella" as among those, rev?

another vote for "ms. jackson", tho a lot of nice enoug songs

ronnie james cio (some dude), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

kevin are you calling "Umbrella" a ballad?

ronnie james cio (some dude), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

do we count "umbrella" as among those, rev?

Why not? I still stand by my statement. "Umbrella"'s up there, but I'll take the Ursh & Mariah jams over it.

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

Why wouldn't "Umbrella" be a ballad?

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, just never felt like a ballad to me. either way yeah "U Got It Bad" and "We Belong Together" are way better.

ronnie james cio (some dude), Monday, 13 July 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

Joe, "Stutter"

what the hell is this

― Bizarro Morbius (Shakey Mo Collier)

Only the second-best #1 song of 2001.

I'm voting for Bootylicious, will also rep for Family Affair which is one of the only MJB songs I don't find terribly overrated.

Mind is blown that there's at least three Number One songs from 2001 that I can't hum when I hear their name.

It Wasn't Me vs. Stutter vs. All 4 U (god, i love that period of janet's career)

Lady Marmalade is 4th.
Ms Jackson is 5th.
Usher singles after that.

Janet. Pretty much the last single of hers I've loved excepting maaaaaybe "Feedback."

bad crack (Eric H.), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

she's released several much better singles since and "Feedback" is not one of them

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 03:35 (sixteen years ago)

Dude Nickelback is obv gonna pwn this

Dan Majerle and the Wailers (Whitey on the Moon), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 03:36 (sixteen years ago)

"Joe" has gotta be the most nondescript, forgettable stage name ever.

Dan Majerle and the Wailers (Whitey on the Moon), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 03:39 (sixteen years ago)

she's released several much better singles since and "Feedback" is not one of them

OK, maybe "R&B Junkie" too, but you can't really miss with an "I'm in Love" sample.

bad crack (Eric H.), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 03:39 (sixteen years ago)

Outkast by the widest possible margin on any of these here polls (thus far)!

Ioannis, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 09:17 (sixteen years ago)

'ms jackson' is v good but nowhere near a runaway victory - the whole run from usher to usher is at least on a par. tempted to vote for alicia keys tbh. the j-lo one was the murder remix, right?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 09:25 (sixteen years ago)

Surprised myself by voting "It Wasn't Me" over "Ms. Jackson". It simply has one of the most gorgeous choruses of this decade, and Rikrok's voice is so pure and smooth (better than Andre's, certainly). Shaggy feels like a guest star on that tune, though I can't imagine how it would sound without the point-counterpoint dialogue between the two vocalists.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 09:57 (sixteen years ago)

wow Stutter owns why do i not remember this at all

Yeah, I kinda hate years like this where there is one song that is totally ::CANON:: and a bunch of other songs of similar quality that get shafted because everyone has spent so much time circle jerking over about how great that one song is. The votes for the other really good songs inevitably get split X ways and the really boring obvious song wins.

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, except that many of these are totally unremarkable (or just plain suck).

Ioannis, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

and many of them are pretty great

trayce ongz (The Reverend), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 10:44 (sixteen years ago)

they're all very-good-to-great except nickelback and crazy town, and even those two aren't exactly unremarkable (ie 8 years later, horrifically, i can still remember how they go)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 10:50 (sixteen years ago)

i actually don't know which are meant to be the "unremarkable" ones!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 10:50 (sixteen years ago)

No, that's not a good thing at all. "Family Affair" is so totally Mary, whereas, all her Terius/Shaffer songs are some generic bullshit that could be by anybody.

Yeah, but the generic bullshit doesn't have Blige singing it.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 July 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

I voted to "ms. jackson" twice

lohan on 'em (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 July 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

xp: While I love her voice, it isn't so great that I want to listen to anything where that's the only thing going for it.

blap goin ham (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

Oh c'mon! I really dig how she wraps that voice around "reciprocity" on Growing Pains' best Ne-Yo number "Fade Away."

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 July 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

er, sorry: I meant "invisibility."

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 July 2009 01:28 (sixteen years ago)

Remember the radio edit of It wasn't me where they changed it to

"We were both buu-makin' love on the bathroom floor"

Dan Majerle and the Wailers (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 16 July 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

Lauryn did "reciprocity" way better in "Ex-Factor".

blap goin ham (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)

i think it was "we were both caught makin' love" -- i was always kind of amazed that they came up with something that flowed the exact same way, really impressive clean edit imo

some dude, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:04 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't even know there was a "clean" version of that song! Finnish radio never plays those "clean" versions, but did MTV Europe also play the "dirty" version? I'm quite sure I've only heard the "butt-naked" version.

Tuomas, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:30 (sixteen years ago)

I'm surprised by how few songs I like are in this poll! For some reason I think back to this time as a golden age of pop music or something. Hm.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:33 (sixteen years ago)

One of the greatest pop moments of my life was getting to hear "Ms Jackson" live at S.O.B.'s before Stankonia had dropped - no one had heard it before or even knew what it was

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, I'm sure quite a few mixed it up with a kumquat.

Tuomas, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:39 (sixteen years ago)

Tuomas you're one of those people who when someone says "yoou want to give me a hand with these groceries" you go "I don't technically WANT to but I certainly will" aren't you?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:43 (sixteen years ago)

No, I'm not one of those people. I have only two hands so I can't really go on giving them to strangers, otherwise I'll run out.

2001 .... dark times indeed. I'm going with Outkast.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

"It Wasn't Me" was one of those songs where while I didn't have strong feelings about it at first, that everyone else around me seemed to hate it with irrational passion totally made me default Shaggy stan, thus I will rep for it still.

THESE ARE MY FEELINGS! FEEL MY FEELINGS! (I eat cannibals), Thursday, 16 July 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

those who enjoy it should listen to "Keep This Fire Burning" by Robyn

Family Affair would've been a close second for me.
And since Stutter means I can't get Fallen out of my head:

I don't hate any of the songs I didn't vote for here, but only one, when it came on the radio in my car the first time I heard it, caused me to pull over and listen in wonder. I didn't know it was "canon" then, I didn't even know who the band was, but I knew "Ms. Jackson" was incredible.
