He's annoying on "Walkin' On the Moon," but "Maybach Music" is the first time this year that I said, "Oh, right, there he is."

i like maybach music (for the texas/lexus thing) and walkin on the moon (for the flow) and as a noted 808 stand i dig "supernova" in general

his turn on make her say is highly reprehensible for the asher roth reference as well as the played out head/brain/knowledge jokes and he also overuses the usually awesome ploy of wrongly pluralizing but really i dont think anything is gonna beat knock you down

barrymore, murdrewland (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

lol :(

i wish that song was better, or even a bit funny

voted "Make Her Say" mostly on the basis of finding everything about it repugnant as fuck, but his "Knock You Down" verse is notably terrible, too

The Reverend, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

this is tough, might have to go back and listen to all these. lots of bad verses here, might go for "knock you down"

voted "knock you down" bc he sucks on it pretty hard and it makes the song way too long to boot.

the fool boy Shiplo (some dude), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

i like pretty much all of them. the worst by far is the verse/intro on scratch from the roots' album.

the answer is definitely "Ego" which is one of the worst things I have ever heard ever.

(his verse, I love the song)

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 18 July 2009 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

i would say his best appearance of 09 is giving the clipse a year old verse for their lead single and "highly anticipated" collaboration

some dude, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

I mean Kanye has good points as a rapper and all but it really is kind of horrifying that the world seems to be kind of OK with or at least not soundly rejecting his whole "I'm a great rapper now" thing

nine months pass...

Yeah, I know it took me a while to admit that "I Gotta Feeling" is great.. "Sexy Chick" I loved from minute one though, it seems really underrated here.

Really revived this just cause I can't find a thread that gets into "Knock You Down" and I think it's a pretty nice song - - the narrative is maybe a little garbled but it's basically cute. I sang it at karaoke tonight and the line-by-line format really adds something in the sense that it makes Kanye's verse extra stilted and awkward, which is appropriate to his character as the nerdy schlub who loses Keri to smooth Ne-Yo. The only big problem with the song is that Hilson's verse is totally forgettable which, y'know, she's the one these dudes are fighting over so she should probably come into focus a little more.

But maybe I'm just hankering for more duets where the singers actually have really clear-cut characters, etc.

i've really warmed to "down" once i realized that its really easy to pretend that it's a pre-punch chris brown song, and not a song sung by someone who is nearly 30

god i could write a book about the things that irritate me in that song, or even just the Kanye verse, from the singular/plural muddle of "the head of football teams" to the pause-worthy "you should leave your boyfriend now, I'mma ask him"

doubt it, not nearly as bad as jay and kanye's is actually pretty ok compared to what he'd been putting out

sveltko (k3vin k.), Sunday, 23 May 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

i would have gone with "forever." just like the song its so boring and generic and so convinced that it isnt

knock you down is at least and enjoyable song and michael jackson/joe jackson isnt the cleverest thing kanyes ever said but its p funny

The Reverend, Sunday, 23 May 2010 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'll admit it has some dud parts ("O-M-G") but come on, it's great and effective. Maybe I'm thinking too much in context of the video/big picture of the song; if you isolate the verse perhaps it falls apart a bit more, but I think it's effective in context of the song.

"Woe is me / baby this is tragic / cuz we had it / it was magic."

Love when Keri jumps in to harmonize, fleetingly, on the "we had it" line. Just for a flash, she jumps into his verse to concur with his desperation, pleading and over-the-top ridiculousness. And then she's gone, again, like that.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 23 May 2010 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

ya for the reasons ilxor is saying the cornyness of something like the michael line almost works in knock you down whereas forever is this super-serious posse cut about how those dudes run shit, so if you're gonna make one of those songs you better bring something much better than "you dont even go to class...BUELLER"

killahpriest (/\/K/\/\), Sunday, 23 May 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm on the fence cause "Knock You Down" does kinda pull the heartstrings with the oversized drama of its college-junior art party romance, agreed totally about "we had it." And again, I think for that scenario, Kanye's awkward rapping actually works, cause his character is a nerdy loser with his adrenaline going and maybe it's not gonna all add up. For that to really work though, he'd have to have a firmer grasp on the status of NASA (program, not place), and I think the Slick Rick thing is misplaced. He should have really geeked out, or shoehorned in some awkward rhyme with "Picasso" or "Rauschenburg" or something.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 23 May 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

aargh, always h8 this argument - so many examples of artists conveying nerdishness or awkwardness or shyness or tentativeness effectively without bringing out, like, an "omg/woe is me" rhyme.

it boggles the mind that anyone could rate that verse at all, let alone as one of kanye's best - the song has a super-pretty melody, if not a great deal of personality on keri's part, and i'd be pretty content with it, but it's kanye's terrible verse which really drags it down.

I actually really liked "Forever," but Kanye's verse is atrocious. It's not only bad because it's corny as shit ("Superbad chicks givin me McLovin"? Seriously, Kanye?) but it's also supposed to be a track bragging about how hard you are, and everyone else seems to get it but Kanye, who spends yet more time whining about how it sure sucks being famous. Way to kill the mood, Kanye.

also Maker Her Say is worth it for "how old is that, old enough" but I guess I have enough of a crush on Kanye that I think like 90% of what he does is super adorable, even I know that his verse on Knock You Down is 50% trash, even if the other half is teen-movie-contrived-awkward perfect
