The White Stripes: White Blood Cells poll

Since there was a Jack White related release this week The Dead Weather, I thought we could look back.

"White Blood Cells is the third album by The White Stripes, released on July 3, 2001.

Considered the band's commercial breakthrough, White Blood Cells peaked at number 61 on the Billboard 200, going Gold and selling over 500,000 units. The album also reached number 55 in the United Kingdom, being bolstered in both territories by the "Fell in Love with a Girl" single and its Lego-animation music video. Stylus Magazine rated it the fifteenth greatest album of 2000-2005 while Pitchfork Media ranked it ninth on their list of the top 100 albums from 2000-2004."

fell in love with a girl is far and away the best of the singles from this, but i think 'we're going to be friends' is my favourite here

hmm i was just listening to de stijl the other day and thinking of polling that.

on this ... i'm a real sucker for "hotel yorba." but "the union forever" is great too. and "dead leaves," "little room," "we're going to be friends." i'll have to think about it.

Putting a word in for Now Mary, a loverlry sonrg. Always wonder if he was unconsciously borrowing from the Townshend song "Mary" from Scoop. There's no exact cop, but a lot of the same textures.

bendy, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

Their best record.

Another for Now Mary.

I'm going to be super boring and choose the big hit single.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

I was excited when this came out cause i was digging de stijl at the time, but i could never get into it and basically didn't pay attention to white stripes albums after that. think i'll vote for i smell a rat cause it pops into my head from time to time.

mizzell, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

this is rawer but elephant is still better.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

Bee OK, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

never got why people love this album so much - its okay, but I never listen to it, and the only White Stripes album its better than is the last one. Elephant, De Stijl, s/t, and esp. Get Behind Me Satan are all way more memorable

Bizarro Morbius (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

this protector forshadowed the amazing piano songs on get behind me satan and gets my vote.

aconner2, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

i prefer get behind me satan and de stijl, for sure, but this was their breakthrough i guess. i voted 'harder to be a gentleman', and i think it still might be jack's best all round song.

can-i-jus (stevie), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

fell in love with a girl is perfect, i`d feel weird voting for anything else.

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:18 (fifteen years ago)

It so reminds me of the Sultans of Ping.

(That's a good thing, btw)

Mark G, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:34 (fifteen years ago)

the last two albums have been seriously ropey. no wonder hes doing all the side projects.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 16 July 2009 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

This is a weird album, a little overlong (tracks 5-7 really don't need to be there) but still has more great songs on it than Elephant, the second half of which always bored the shit out of me. Plumped for Offend In Every Way in the end but it could have been any one of 4 or 5 tracks.

Seems insane now that this only got to #55 in the UK.

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 July 2009 10:40 (fifteen years ago)

(Being a bit disingenuous there as the first half of Elephant is really really great)

Sold a lot over a long time.

billstevejim, Friday, 17 July 2009 05:50 (fifteen years ago)

finally had a chance to throw this on today, what a great album. i'm voting for "The Union Forever."

Bee OK, Saturday, 18 July 2009 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

Swimming against the tide here, but this might be their best album. Voted yesterday, but I can't remember what I voted for! One of "Dead Leaves" "Fell in Love With a Girl", "Offend in Every Way" or "Hotel Yorba". That's four very good songs right there.

Lostandfound, Saturday, 18 July 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

1. Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
2. Fell in Love with a Girl
3. The Same Boy You've Always Known
4. The Union Forever
5. Little Room

nicky lo-fi, Saturday, 18 July 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

never got why people love this album so much - its okay, but I never listen to it <-- me too.

However, "I Think I Smell a Rat" and "We're Going to Be Friends" make me keep it.
