"if i aint got you" is one of my favorite songs ever

― barrymore, murdrewland (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, July 14, 2009 7:13 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

one of my fav things about 'if i ain't got you' was learning that kelly holmes used it as inspiration the year she won her 2 olympic golds. she said she used to walk around the tracks early in the morning before anyone else was training, and when she sang along the "you" of the song would be the gold medal. at her best, alicia keys has a real knack for making vague, non-specific lyrics sound like universal emotions and not just clichés.

my other fav thing about it is that it's a really amazing song.

she'll def never top her method man-as-muse period

u don't know my name or diary? or my boo?

canks: for the memories (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

for me it's a 2-horse race between "You Don't Know My Name" and "If I Ain't Got You."

the fool boy Shiplo (some dude), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

oh haha take out my boo, i was thinking of that kelly rowland nelly song. which for some reason gets into my head EVERY SINGLE DAY. it's the "i'd buy that for a dollar" of songs.

canks: for the memories (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

"My Boo" >>> "Dilemma" though

the fool boy Shiplo (some dude), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

im just saying, something about the melody of that song is like permanently lodged in my brainpiece.

canks: for the memories (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

that said

i like alicia keys. she has a lot of good songs! this is a worthy poll.

canks: for the memories (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

ha i tried to do this after that exchange last night but was too drunk to type them all out. if we're talking originals, it's a straight fight between 'fallin' and 'you don't know my name' and maybe 'if i ain't got you' for me.

but the remixes might be the spanner in the works!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SmxB_oAFRE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNfkiBXVgKM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70cqMWw-B5g

and i KNOW there was an amazing reggae remix of 'you don't know my name' doing the rounds at the time but it's not on youtube and i've lost the mp3...

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

"No One" is sooooo empty. "You Don't Know My Name" for me.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Oh – I forgot about "Unbreakable," which I liked a lot at the time.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

"Fallin'" is garbage imo, one of the dreariest and blandest R&B smashes of the decade

the fool boy Shiplo (some dude), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

"No One" by a mile

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

voted "You Don't Know My Name" for obvious obviousness, but have to put in a word for "Every Little Bit Hurts", which ppl don't seem to know

"A Woman's Worth"

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago)

def "if i aint got you" with "you don't know my name" and "like you'll never see me again" third. i played that luda rmx out for a few weeks.

shamwow holdingtongue (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

"no one" is def one of my three least favorite singles of the decade. the ONLY thing it has going for it is the comedic value of when the synths come in because they sound like if an elephant sat on a whoopie cushion the size of a sedan

shamwow holdingtongue (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:17 (fifteen years ago)

^^^this

i'll vote either "you don't know my name" or "if i ain't got you"

ship is wrong about my boo being better than dilemma, dilemma is one of the greatest singles of the decade and my boo is not close

k3vin kweller (Tape Store), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:20 (fifteen years ago)

that might be one of the most OTM things said about "no one" ever.

"you don't know my name" or "if i ain't got you."

i must stick up for "fallin'" because it is a pretty short song, around 3:30, and at around 2:00, i feel like i am being taken ahold of by something really amazing.

gonna be a long hot summer for the MS Word paperclip (the table is the table), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:54 (fifteen years ago)

if i aint got you. but i liked no one to my surprise too.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

Good GOD do I hate "No One."

I'm going with "You Don't Know My Name," which is entirely unimpeachable.

Hey, Alex likes Luther Vandross, so I've got his back.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

you dont know my name is great, yes, even though she sounds butch in the spoken part at the end.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

Looking at Wikipedia to see if she had anything new coming soon, I discovered that she was one of the kids on the "Slumber Party" episode from the first season of The Cosby Show where Cliff took Rudy and her friends to the nice restaurant and then ended up getting burgers from across the street because they didn't like the gourmet burgers.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

even though she sounds butch in the spoken part at the end

Yeah, the "can you hear me now?" phone ad allusion is cringeworthy, but the song is still gorgeous.

hey Tim F..... why not go fuck yourself?

"you don't know my name" for that descending piano figure in the chorus. i'm kind of fond of "no one" but less so now than i was when it first came out

definitely not by a mile, but it's not as bad as some of you seem to think it is.

ehhh p. diddy miss (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

even if i'm feeling generous it's not in the top half of these songs

stupidcrazyswagilisticjumpininyaladyocious (some dude), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

I came around to "No One" eventually. Nothing wrong with big anthems.

DOPEMETER (The Reverend), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

i came around to it, but it's not the best by a long shot.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

it's just kind of plodding.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

Hm, yes, well "No One" is her most affecting for me, but "You Don't Know My Name" just feels like a masterpiece to me

mitya, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

kevin otm about 'no one', i don't get the hate for it at all - i love the "oh-oh-oh-oh"s at the end. and the reggae remixes are amazing.

voted 'fallin' though

man i shoulda thrown "if i ain't got you" a vote once it became apparent my other favorite would win, because i didn't know the margin would be this big

some dude, Thursday, 23 July 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

"diary" deserved at least one vote... :-\

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 23 July 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

It seems very wrong that "Teenage Love Affair" beat "Like You'll Never See Me Again".

"If I Ain't Got You" is such a great great Idol-style big-chest standard. Almost up there with "I Have Nothing".

Tim F, Thursday, 23 July 2009 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

"un-thinkable" is certainly top 5 here

J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 06:01 (fourteen years ago)

i'd be confident of a "try sleeping with a broken heart" win, if these were repolled now

was "love is blind" ever a single anywere? (and if not why not? it's amazing)

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 09:18 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, she's still alive.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 9 January 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

i love Alicia's first album, just 'liked' Diary, and completely lost track of her. good to see she's going strong.

my favorite song of hers isn't a single tho, it's "Goodbye" from the first album.

also I love Fallin' so fuq the hate itt!

yer both nuts, "Un-Thinkable" is maybe top 10 and no fucking way would "Try Sleeping" ever win although it's def good and top 5 material

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

like she has random barely remembered old 4th singles like "Karma" that are better than the hits off her latest album

some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

ick I've always hated Karma.

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah "try sleeping" is def top 3 for me. "if i aint got you" is my pick tho

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

i always loved the reggaeton remix of "karma". i miss reggaeton.
