Delilah played "All My Life" on the radio tonight, took my breath away.

k3vin kweller (Tape Store), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:21 (fifteen years ago)

Next will win this, though?

back in like 6th grade i sent this girl who i liked an email which consisted of the lyrics to kci and jojo's "all my life"

shamwow holdingtongue (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, fuck, "The Boy is Mine," i fucking loved that song during summer of 98, haven't listened in a long time. Here is Divine, i don't remember it either:

k3vin kweller (Tape Store), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

i also made her dinner - main entree was tilapia with my special luxury chocolate + cheese sauce - i wonder why she didn't go out with me

shamwow holdingtongue (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

all my life i've been praying for special luxury chocolate + cheese sauce

lol sarges

trill ent. dudes get wiped down, totally (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

the Divine song doesn't sound familiar at all

trill ent. dudes get wiped down, totally (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

well, beyond sounding vaguely familiar in a "this is a rather undistinguishable late 90s r&b ballad" sense

trill ent. dudes get wiped down, totally (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:32 (fifteen years ago)

whoa check out the autotune on this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-OqZfkjijI

i never noticed that when i was younger

k3vin kweller (Tape Store), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:44 (fifteen years ago)

it would be dope if something could as funky as "too close" could get on the radio in 09

shamwow holdingtongue (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:51 (fifteen years ago)

Exactly same reaction to the Divine song - maybe the least-remembered #1 ever.

The idea that R. Kelly dueted with Celine Dion ...

Went with L.

both suck, fwiw

trill ent. dudes get wiped down, totally (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:33 (fifteen years ago)

nah "the boy is mine" is a great single, perfect one-off stunt collaboration.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

just be glad i'm not posting barenaked ladies embeds.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:39 (fifteen years ago)

This was my last year of hs, first year of college, so I was def hearin pop music.

I don't understand how something like "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" is so disgustingly overplayed in my head in 1998, but i never heard this Divine song

▌_o_____________ ▌ (pongo paddleton) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

the chorus to the divine song is vaguely familiar, but i'm surprised it was a #1. it's not a bad melody and arrangement, but the singing is really not very good.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:45 (fifteen years ago)

divine, where are you now?

All three women were teenagers when they were recruited by Pendulum Records owner Ruben Rodriguez to form Divine who were ultimately released on his label Red Ant Entertainment. ... The group formed in 1996 and disbanded in 2000. In January 2007, Thornton auditioned in season 6 of American Idol in New York City. She sang a cover of Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way" and made it through to Hollywood, California but was later cut in the Hollywood rounds.

i wonder if she's the first person who sang a #1 hit before she tried out for american idol.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 July 2009 07:48 (fifteen years ago)

"My Heart Will Go On" was my class song. What a crock of shit.

And yet for all the "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" medleys on various TV shows or whatever, I don't remember them playing it AT ALL at my prom.

And the kids nxt year all got the sunscreen song

MY ALL

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:06 (fifteen years ago)

~vividly emblazoned in my mind~

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:06 (fifteen years ago)

"Doo Wop" edges out Bonnie Prince Will Smith for me, just about. Different vibes tho, so my vote would depend on what time of the week and how I'm feeling. Anyway, this morning it's "Doo Wop".

Raekwon Parlour (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:07 (fifteen years ago)

'my all' is maybe my favourite mariah song ever ever ever

amazing remixes too! the uk garage one by dva and the so so def one (heartbreak in summertime~~~) spring to mind

and she says "emblazoned"

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

feel bad for lauryn and brandy&monica as 'doo wop' and 'the boy is mine' are also all-tymers but...EMBLAZONED.

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man do I ever love "Too Close." Bunch of other good stuff here too.

Matos W.K., Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:10 (fifteen years ago)

I loved "Too Close" all through that summer and could never stand to hear it afterward. :(

trill ent. dudes get wiped down, totally (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

you could say that you got too close

king kongro (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:15 (fifteen years ago)

'my all' has some of mimi's best lyrics actually..."i am thinking of you, in my sleepless solitude tonight" is a wonderfully dramatic opener, and then "and i can't go on - living in a memory of our song" in the chorus

i meant d.e.a. project not dva w/r/t the ukg remix

of these it`s either the will smith track or all my life, but relistening to all these songs and oh god 1998 was a shit year.

lauryn

Lostandfound, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

She's only humyn...

"Lately" was a hit in the UK (and, presumably, Ireland), but for Samantha Mumba instead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms1EOZdJt7s

Gertcha Armour (William Bloody Swygart), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:30 (fifteen years ago)

heard surprisinly little of these. Together Again is quite good, very happy chorus. (now what is the Janet song with the Joni Mitchell sample and Q-tip?) (not this one i know)

i like how Will Smith releases 1 summer hit every 7 years or something.

Ludo, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:35 (fifteen years ago)

Janet song with Joni sample = "Got Til It's Gone", my favourite ever.

Raekwon Parlour (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:37 (fifteen years ago)

for me it is either "doo wop" or "all my life" without a doubt.

though i have a special memory about "truly madly deeply." it involves sunshine, beer, bicycles and the song playing through an awesomely hissy boombox.

'together again' is pretty good though really weirdly out-of-place on the velvet rope

i don't remember the divine track either but it's great!

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:47 (fifteen years ago)

"Together Again" makes so much more sense on my cassette copy of The Velvet Rope, where it ends side 1.

trill ent. dudes get wiped down, totally (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:53 (fifteen years ago)

cool I love Kinchen too, don't know a lot of his remix work tho. Is your blog "Deep Movements"? If so I've just found it.

Raekwon Parlour (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago)

Jeez, comes to something when I'm voting BareNaked Ladies!

Mark G, Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:00 (fifteen years ago)

Unfortunately, they played that Savage Garden too many times at a developing age to be any good for me. "LIKE A CHICKA CHERRY COLA!!"

It also edges out Janet for the win.

I'm Australian or some other weird nationality (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:00 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, I didn't see "One Week". I'm voting "One Week".

and we got 'too close' as well...performed by blue :(

this fucking country

Janet song with Joni sample = "Got Til It's Gone", my favourite ever.

ah thx, mine too i think. (as in Janet-song)

Ludo, Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:08 (fifteen years ago)

^^^yeah!^^^

"Jiggy" over "Doo Wop" for me thanx.

Ioannis, Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

"Truly Madly Deeply" for sure.

halfadozen, Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:52 (fifteen years ago)

First year where I haven't liked any of these. Was hoping that Divine would be THE Divine with a track I hadn't heard before, but nope.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 July 2009 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

"Doo Wop," but I can't find much love for most of these. This was one of those years when (a) more interesting stuff appeared in the Top 20, and (b) The non-charting airplay Number Ones were so superior (Imbruglia's "Torn").

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 July 2009 11:37 (fifteen years ago)

"The First Night" is soooo underrated (as evidenced by the fact that I'm the first person to even mention it), voting for that.

some dude, Thursday, 16 July 2009 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

(Imbruglia's "Torn")

yeah, casting a ghost vote for that.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

Lauryn, ahead of Janet. I revisited Brandy & Monica a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't quite as strong as I remembered it.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:31 (fifteen years ago)

Mariah looks so hot in the My All music vid..

Christyles, Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

This list is way better than I remember 1998 being.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

Of course, time has made stuff like the K-Ci and JoJo and the Usher far more tolerable.

Not Barenaked Ladies, tho.

the vocals on that song are crazy

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

I can't say I'd rep for a single song on this list tbh. Voting for "Together Again", I guess.

Savage Garden, "Truly Madly Deeply" - I hated this song when I was 12 when all the other girls were going gaga over it, I'm so proud of myself
Usher, "Nice and Slow" - I'm sure I've heard this song before but I couldn't for my life remember how it goes
Céline Dion, "My Heart Will Go On" - I loved song back in the day
Will Smith, "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" - I have much more appreciation for Will Smith now then I did back in 1998, probably would dig hearing this on the radio now much more than back then
K-Ci and JoJo, "All My Life" - nice song...
Next, "Too Close" - Good song but the lyrics are a bit squick
Mariah Carey, "My All" - another song I know I have heard where I just can't remember how it goes
Brandy and Monica, "The Boy Is Mine" - Never got the hype about this song, battle of the personality-less divas
Aerosmith, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" - VOM
Monica, "The First Night" - Never heard it
Barenaked Ladies, "One Week" - Decent song but gimmicky
Lauryn Hill, "Doo Wop (That Thing)" - I liked this song, I never warmed up to Lauryn Hill though
Divine, "Lately" - ???
R. Kelly and Céline Dion, "I'm Your Angel" - never heard it

Wow that is a dire, dire list.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

I felt like there was a lot missing from that list--I guess these didn't make it to #1:

* "Are You That Somebody?" - Aaliyah
* "Believe" - Cher
* "Celebrity Skin" - Hole
* "The Dope Show"-Marilyn Manson
* "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" - Green Day
* "Hard Knock Life" - Jay-Z
* "Intergalactic" - Beastie Boys
* "My Hero" - Foo Fighters
* "The Rockafeller Skank" - Fatboy Slim
* "Ruff Ryders' Anthem" - DMX
* "Still Not a Player" - Big Pun feat. Joe
* "This Kiss" - Faith Hill
* "Torn" - Natalie Imbruglia

President Keyes, Monday, 20 July 2009 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

The #2s of 1998:

Puff Daddy - It's All About the Benjamins
Madonna - Frozen
Montell Jordan - Let's Ride
Shania Twain - You're Still the One
Usher - My way
Deborah Cox - Nobody's Supposed to be here

master of karate and friendship for everyone (musically), Monday, 20 July 2009 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

I was thinking about doing a #2s poll to complement the #1 polls, not sure if anyone would care and it's not as if ILX needs more polls

master of karate and friendship for everyone (musically), Monday, 20 July 2009 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

looooooolllllllllll nobody's supposed to be here

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

"Together Again", but this is a really horrible list. Almost all of the entries are absolutely awful.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 20 July 2009 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

Pres Keyes - Cher would hit #1 with that in '99; Aaliyah and Imbruglia were victims of chart policy that omitted songs for which a commercial single was not made available; the rest charted lower.

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 20 July 2009 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

I can't believe "One Week" was a #1. This song is a droopy ballsack.

billstevejim, Monday, 20 July 2009 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

Montell Jordan - Let's Ride

Totally would have voted for this..

billstevejim, Monday, 20 July 2009 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

Just kidding.. I was thinking of "Get It On Tonite."

billstevejim, Monday, 20 July 2009 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

i think i'm voting Brandy and Monica!

amateurs write for recognition. professionals write for an audience (Tape Store), Monday, 20 July 2009 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

I like "Doo Wop (That Thing)" even though it's corny and dated in the same way that The Love Below is corny and dated.. My enjoyment of "Too Close" may be mostly due to nostalgic factors, although that sample (is it Kurtis Blow?) is pretty rad.. So overall I had to go with "All My Life," which is the only song on that list I enjoyed just as much in 1998 as I do now.

billstevejim, Monday, 20 July 2009 05:09 (fifteen years ago)

Too Close: the only #1 hit about popping a boner?

Dan Majerle and the Wailers (Whitey on the Moon), Monday, 20 July 2009 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

xp yeah Kurtis Blow, "Christmas Rappin'"

Como el Gran Houdini (The Reverend), Monday, 20 July 2009 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

One of these songs connects with one of the songs in the 1961 poll.

Eazy, Monday, 20 July 2009 07:20 (fifteen years ago)
