i was listening to a station here in Los Angeles called the Sound and they just finished playing a Psychedelic Furs song and said "They along with the Happy Mondays are going to play Club Nokia on September 18, 2009"

happy, happy, joy, joy.
though i know it won't be anything like when i saw them for the Call the Cops tour aka Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches this is great news!
― Bee OK, Friday, 17 July 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)
I stick by this from two years back.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 July 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago)
Bez is DJing at a backpackers "hits of britpop" night in Kings Cross, Sydney next Thursday
― surm? lol (sic), Friday, 17 July 2009 03:00 (fifteen years ago)
ned i think you're right and fair as far as the furs go, but i admit to some curiosity about the possibility of seeing (some iteration of) the mondays. might be enough to get me out, depending how much it is and all.
― us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Friday, 17 July 2009 04:46 (fifteen years ago)
Meantime, I'm looking forward to the imminent Cure tour. Am I any less willingly complicit?
Ned, as much as you stick by the article, there is this line. So, personal preference aside, what makes a Furs tour in 2009 any more nostalgic, familiar and ultimately unnecessary than the Cure shows last summer (which I personally loved and recall you did as well)?

Cure still an active band creating new material and pull a live audience who actually buy it, even if they don't play it more than three times
― surm? lol (sic), Friday, 17 July 2009 06:51 (fifteen years ago)
^^bought bloodflowers and saw them in 2000, didn't buy S/T or last one and skipped tour in 2007
― surm? lol (sic), Friday, 17 July 2009 06:52 (fifteen years ago)
Cure still an active band creating new material
I'd argue it's still more nostalgia than fresh approach, given the band plays far more songs from Disintegration alone than their most recent album at any given time.

I saw the Mondays at Glasto circa 2000 or so, they were fucking awful. Can't really imagine they'll be much better now.
― someone who is ranked fairly highly in an army of poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 17 July 2009 13:26 (fifteen years ago)
who's in the mondays now? is it the full old lineup?
i don't expect they'd be good, but the inherent unpredictability of anything involving shaun ryder means they might be more interesting than your normal nostalgia act.
― us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Friday, 17 July 2009 13:29 (fifteen years ago)
anybody watch this? is it a trainwreck?
― us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Friday, 17 July 2009 13:33 (fifteen years ago)
not too bad actually."ex-stacy", and the chuckle brothers arguing whether they played with either george michael or aha provide the laughs.
― mark e, Friday, 17 July 2009 21:02 (fifteen years ago)
it's Shaun, the drummer, and Bez.

That video was very sad for me to watch. i still feel bad for his daughter, who i think is named Jail. God I hope it's spelled different than it sounds.

― iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Saturday, 18 July 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago)
That's even worse than Mani DJing on a harbour cruise a few months ago.
― challop matters (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 19 July 2009 14:10 (fifteen years ago)
imo the Furs much more interesting on the strength of Book of Days and World Outisde than the Cure or the Mondays
― worm? lol (J0hn D.), Sunday, 19 July 2009 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
First Love Spit Love a good continuation of those two albums as well. Buried by history and changing taste.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 July 2009 14:34 (fifteen years ago)
The difference between the Mondays and the Cure live is that the Cure are seasoned pros well beyond the Mondays and put on a live show that reflects that experience, saw them for Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and again for Blood Flowers, both times phenomenal shows. Still, BEZ AND RYDER 4EVAR!
― twentyfourtracks, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:31 (fifteen years ago)
this is not true of tours in support of new material
― Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:33 (fifteen years ago)
john are these the only two furs albums you know or do you just mean "on the strength of" them being their best albums
― da croupier, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago)
Does anyone have the Long Version of House by the Furs? I'm desperately searching for it but not having any luck.
― brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
no anth what I mean is later Furs > later Cure, for me
― Trey Tsongas (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
You can't be serious. Did you see the same tours that I did?
Curiosa 2004, I remember they played maybe 3 new songs and 5+ from Disintegration.
The recent 2008 tour was even worse, statistically speaking. Lots of old stuff.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago)
J0hn said in the main P-Furs thread that he loves their last two more than the others, Anthony.
― Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't see Curiosa because I had no interest in seeing the other bands.
The recent 2008 tour happened before the album came out but they still played all four of the new singles in Boston.
― Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
What a truly strange and somewhat depressing double-bill.
― Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
^ OTM plus not really seeing the overlap in the fan base
ps xxpost And he's got a point! Someone should give Book of Days a listen ;-)
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
Book of Days really is a remarkable album -- after the Midnight to Midnight cowflop, rebounding with "All That Money Wants" for the first greatest hits collection and then said album was inspiring.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
I did hear "Should God Forget" for the first time in years the other day and it sounded good: the old Spector-and-phlegm sound given the college try.
― Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
saw this last Thursday, Mondays were fucking horrible. it's just Shaun + a bunch of young session musicians. no bez. too much Unkle Dysfunktional & Black Grape material. I left after 30 mins.

They were on a "Haunted House" programme a week ago (it was on TV then, that is)
My guess is, they wouldn't cop out if it was a UK tour, as Bez is fairly fundamental.
Whereas in the USA, they probably are less bothered.
