what do you think? should they be? destroyed, that is. all of them.
the title is the chorus. it's pretty catchy!
― scott seward, Sunday, 19 July 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago)
Girls who rape should all be destroyed, too.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 19 July 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
I don't like the Ravonettes' aesthetic. There was something charming and naive about the 1960s girl groups' perspective that you can't recreate after the fact without ruining what made it so interesting in the first place. It's like a sober person trying to put on the funny drunk persona they had the night before.
― Cunga, Sunday, 19 July 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
and yet i really like the aislers set and jesus and mary chain. and the ramones.
― scott seward, Sunday, 19 July 2009 02:39 (fifteen years ago)
and the shop assistants.
― scott seward, Sunday, 19 July 2009 02:40 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, yet I like all those groups as well (and I've loved some individual Raveonettes' songs) but the gimmick is a bit too much. It reminds me of that English girl group from a years ago that "updated" the Andrews Sisters.
Maybe it's because there's a bit too much know-we-know-better smugness in the shtick. The other acts don't have that/
― Cunga, Sunday, 19 July 2009 02:45 (fifteen years ago)
Anyone who thinks that original 60s girl groups were "charming and naive" needs to go and listen to some Shangri-Las singles and some Supremes singles again - I mean, really listen to them. There's a kind of knowingness and depth to a lot of girl group era stuff, lyrically especially, that really hasn't been matched in a long time.
In a way, it's the *opposite* that's what I hate about nouveau girl groups - that it's all cheesy cheery kitsch and finger-snapping without the undercurrent of actually addressing pain and suffering and complex emotional topics - no Love Child, no Living In Shame, no He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss, no Past Present and Future - the fact that too many people listening to girl groups go "ooh, cute harmonies, cute dresses, handclaps" and disregard the fact that the songs are about the ostracism and the consequences of unprotected sex, the class line/racism, domestic violence, rape (just going through those four songs named - there are dozens more)
To miss that is to romanticise a gooey toffee apple view of a genre that is totally inaccurate.

Damn right!
― Mark G, Sunday, 19 July 2009 08:29 (fifteen years ago)
Had no idea they've got a new disc coming out in 2009! Good intel; thx.
And good song. They've always had that girl-group sound to them, but there's something edgy about The Raveonettes that, to me, keeps their music above pastiche (e.g., the noise-blasts; the violent or druggy lyrics -- tho I realize that those elements, standing alone, aren't innovative either).
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 19 July 2009 10:33 (fifteen years ago)
Yep, the Raveonettes are generally excellent, their last record was their best and I'm hoping they continue to get better.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 19 July 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)
And to tie it in with another current thread their performance of "Sex Beat" last time I saw 'em was pretty sharp. Though most of the crowd didn't know what it was.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 July 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago)
i like the raveonettes for a song or two and then they tend to bore me a bit. maria will like this album though. so i'll give it to her. not that she's boring or likes boring music. or because she is girly or a girl. i just think she'd like it. okay?
this new one strikes me as being even more shoegazey than their other stuff, but i haven't heard their other stuff in a long time.
― scott seward, Sunday, 19 July 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago)
Scott, have you heard The Raveonette's last album, Lust Lust Lust? Not sure if it's your kind of thing, but it's ferocious and catchy little noise-pop record.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 19 July 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
maria really liked it!
― scott seward, Sunday, 19 July 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Fuuuuuuuck I'm excited now.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
Don't really get the girl group stuff -- Raveonettes read to me as a J&MC rip straight up no chaser. I.E. to the extent that girl-group is part of their sound it's only insofar as it's part of Jesus and Mary Chain sound. And I like it!
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 20 July 2009 01:42 (fifteen years ago)
i loved lust lust lust and the two itunes EPs that followed it were really good too.
― I'm a Matt...I'm a DC (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 20 July 2009 01:55 (fifteen years ago)
the second track on this album, "Gone Forever" is TOTAL jesus & mary chain. I listened to this album again tonight and saying that it is more shoegazerish might be hyperbole a bit. i think it's just the tempo of a lot of the songs and the breathiness and that metronome drum beat. having said that, the tenth track, "Break Up Girls" opens with a TOTAL shoegaze blast. I like some of these songs more than the first time i listened. Boys Who Rape really is the standout. It's the best song on the album. I also really like "Heart Of Stone" and "D.R.U.G.S.". I just wish that they were a little bit weirder, you know? Just a couple more twists and turns per song. The sound is okay. But you really have to like the echo-y vocals or you won't like this at all. The last song "Wine" with its breathy david lynch dreaminess is appealing too. but it just might be the wine talking.
did i mention that this is on Vice Records? or maybe they have been for awhile and i wasn't paying attention.
in the end, fans of this band will like this album.
― scott seward, Monday, 20 July 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)
last album was on vice
― I'm a Matt...I'm a DC (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 20 July 2009 02:58 (fifteen years ago)
Lust Lust Lust came out on Vice Records. Any port in the storm...
Raveonettes read to me as a J&MC rip straight up no chaser.
Not a bad thing at all as long as they're doing something interesting with it, and I think they have been. (and really this is like criticizing Stereolab for ripping off everyone). Really looking forward to this when it's done.
If you're not getting the girl group sound, then listen to the first half of Pretty In Black
― Elvis Telecom, Monday, 20 July 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

Not a bad thing at all
I meant it as a 100% good thing!
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 20 July 2009 03:58 (fifteen years ago)
It got some good -- even glowing -- praise, but I still thought Lust Lust Lust was criminally underappreciated. I've got high hopes for the new album.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 20 July 2009 04:03 (fifteen years ago)
There are days when I'd rate Lust Lust Lust above Psychocandy.

"Suicide" is growing on me.
― Leee, Saturday, 8 August 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago)
I was looking on Rhapsody for this, but it isn't there. Then I went to see what they had by "Thou" (Belgian band who sometimes sound like Raveonettes). There was a misfiled album, which includes a track called, "The Severed Genitals of Every Rapist Hang Bleeding From These Trees."
Felt the need to share this.
― dlp9001, Saturday, 8 August 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago)
"Last Dance" is meh.
― Leee, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, I'm digging it. I like the swerve toward poppier song structures. Suits them well. Also, a good change-of-pace after the noisy Lust Lust Lust.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:22 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not dismissing the turn to sweet melodies -- I love "Suicide" for those reasons -- but "Last Dance" seems to just miss the mark. Too sticky sweet for me, maybe?
― Leee, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:29 (fifteen years ago)
Leaked. I'm digging it a lot.

whoa this is surprisingly excellent so far. only 2 songs in, but "gone forever" is great
― dorroughmac (k3vin k.), Friday, 18 September 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not surprised by how excellent it is. But I AM disappointed in how lame the cover art is after three previous albums with very nice cover art.

Looks like the entire new album is streaming on The Raveonettes' MySpace page.

― Pete Scholtes, Friday, 9 October 2009 12:10 (fifteen years ago)
can't side with you. lust lust lust disappoints me even more on each listen, the newie the opposite
― sound of contusion (electricsound), Friday, 9 October 2009 12:14 (fifteen years ago)
This song is so amazing on so many levels. I am gonna be singing this for the next few weeks, I just know it. (and get some funny looks on the tube.)
― ...and the wizard blew his horn (Masonic Boom), Friday, 9 October 2009 13:43 (fifteen years ago)
Spoke too soon: "Breaking Into Cars" is lovely. But "Last Dance" sounds like warmed-over Fountains of Wayne without the humor, and "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" should have been destroyed.
― Pete Scholtes, Monday, 12 October 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i like this band a lot but the can get pretty corny @ times - the second song is my jam on this
― we beat so many gimp (k3vin k.), Monday, 12 October 2009 01:12 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think "Boys Who Rape" is corny: It's a piece of sophisticated pop art provocation. And a mistake.
― Pete Scholtes, Monday, 12 October 2009 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
Why a mistake?
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 12 October 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)
i'm talking more abt "bang" but "rape" is kinda corny too
― we beat so many gimp (k3vin k.), Monday, 12 October 2009 14:55 (fifteen years ago)
oh the last song is dope too, "wine" is it?
― we beat so many gimp (k3vin k.), Monday, 12 October 2009 14:56 (fifteen years ago)
If "Boys Who Rape" is supposed to make you feel the horror and wrath of its lyrics, which empathize with a rape victim in the second person and seem pretty straightforward, if mistranslated ("3 to 1 girl/How can you win," "One horrid night," "Make you feel useless"--are these really words anyone would use to describe a rape?), then the incongruous music (all major-chord harmonies and nostalgic pop changes) distracts from this effect. If it's supposed to be a comment on the glaring incongruity of lyrics and music, it's both pat and in bad taste: The dissonance doesn't signify in the way a happy-psycho-killer song might (or even happy-revenge-getter, or happy rapist), and stands in a long line of bad art that uses rape like cobalt blue straight out of the paint tube to grab attention--see this thread's title.
― Pete Scholtes, Monday, 12 October 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)
Of course, I'm reading the rest of the lyric sheet and detecting a theme--yes, this is a "real time" reaction!...
― Pete Scholtes, Monday, 12 October 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I was going to mention something earlier about how the song certainly seems to trivialize the horrifying act of rape. And certainly not in any "good" kind of thought-provoking way.
― & other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 12 October 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
Gotta admit, the rest of the album is ace, though.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:54 (fifteen years ago)
I'm a chick who's been raped and I think that "Boys Who Rape" is a damn fun, fine little ditty with a-ok lyrics. Sometimes you want something to trivialize it! It's a lame burden having this big thing hanging over your head, and it's nice to have a song that digs that in such a groovy way! The song puts a smile on my face every time, I'm glad they did it like they did it.
― existential eggs (Abbott), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
You guys are free to overthink it tho.
Ha, well then I'm glad they made it too then, and glad you shared. It is emerging as the song you sorta can't deny or get around on here.
