"Night and Day" is one of the most perfect productions in rock history.

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2009 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

Al B. all day every day. I like the chorus of "Don't Disturb This Groove" fine but "Night and Day" is like sunlight on water.

OTOH Al's lipsyncing here leaves a lot to be desired

I like Nite and Day like nothing but i have two questions about the video.

What's with the Bass Guitar? Don't the producer know the song's bass was NOT a guitar but a keyboard.

What's with the analog drum in the video. The drum sound was created on a Linn-9000 drum machine.

Affirmative.

"Night and Day" is noteperfect late eighties R&B production: it's Scritti Politti done with the kind of class you can't buy or fake.

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 July 2009 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

though i hate to underestimate ilx challopsin', could anyone vote against al b in this???

Someone who'd vote for a Sonic Youth cover of The System.

love both and really don't think this is as one-sided as yall are making it out to be tbh

john q. lazzarus (donna rouge), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

The System were basically a musical Miami Vice...heck, I think they even did a cameo on Miami Vice back in the day..."Night And Day" wins the sprint, but I'd take The System in a marathon...

Gotta be honest: I thought it'd be a landslide, despite what I think of as nearly as fair as it can get, but I'm starting to regret my own vote here.

god, if i can suggest ban that whole damned thread... (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 02:57 (sixteen years ago)

I was lol'ing at this on the way to work this morning.

Not that i was trying to emphasize it was an Emu machine on Night and Day (my guess is the SP12) and a DMX on Groove, or anything...

god, if i can suggest ban that whole damned thread... (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 01:32 (sixteen years ago)

From what I know the Linn-9000 was coming down in price and now mid-level producers were starting to use it(Ironically, The Linn-9000 was becoming popular few years after it was released and when Linn Electronics shut down)

Unless there is some documentation that states so. The drum sound in Nite and Day could have easily been a Linn-9000. The snare is run through such reverb it is hard to tell and the toms sound as if they have been processed but from what i know from reading about production techniques of the time. The Linn-9000 was easy to process using sound processing techniques. For example, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis tore up the Linn-9000 using processing techniques during the mid-80's on such jams such as "Control" by Janet Jackson, "The Finest" by the SOS band and "Human" by Human League.

But i won't hold it against you if it was an SP-12. That was becoming popular with rappers and New Jack Swingsters. You could sample pieces of others music into it and loop it with a drum track. Nite and Day could have been an SP-12. The SP-12 was i think also used by Teddy Riley in Guy and Keith Sweat songs.
