So I walked into a Dollar Tree and heard the last 20 seconds of a late '70s/early '80s midtempo Yacht Rock-sounding tune. It had switched into pretty much an instrumental at that point, with a Peter Cetera-sounding voice chiming in with (I think) the vocal "ninety-nine" and nothing else. (It was not "99 Red Balloons.") There might have been some funky slap bass thing going on.

This song must have been a minor hit back in the '70s or '80s... because that was the last time I heard it.

Any ideas?

This sounds like something they would play at Dollar Tree! Are these guys for real? I like the idea of wearing all white, it should come back in style. Even the glasses are white!

Kinda scary to think that there's been a thin piece of brain tissue behind my skull that's been sitting dormant for 20 years, just waiting for you to come along and wake it up.
Soon as I saw that chalk outline start dancing, I was all "Just watch, he's gonna do a backflip."

Such was the ridiculous state of my 13 year old mind that when said song was a hit -- which was right around the time Dune came out, which they of course did the soundtrack for -- I figured this song was their way of telling the story of the film in a pop song equivalent. Must have been the "Young girls say he's Jesus" line.

― Ned Raggett,
You know, I'd forgotten this, especially the Ultravox "Sleepwalk" sequencer.
