Thomas Leer.

in general, thomas leer (for 'The Bridge' alone)

in this fite, the normal by a wide margin.

Normal is scarey where Private Plane is serene. Both *incredible* records, but Leer by a whisker.

i think overall i'd rather listen to "private plane" these days, though the initial rush of first hearing the normal is pretty intense, and never really fades. both have great sleeves!

I have to admit, I've never heard Private Plane. Rectifying that now.

I don't think it's unfair of me to vote for The Normal here.

^^ Same plus they always played "Warm Leatherette" at a new wave club night I used to go to years ago so it brings back good memories.

both singles are often held up as kind of the start of diy, but i'm sure dan selzer could tell you better. i guess more people will have heard the normal, plus it has extra "routes of dance music" status

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

"private plane" is one of my favorite songs; never really dug "warm leatherette" (or the whole wave of cold n spiky spoken word synth noise stuff that it birthed)

i think private plane is also kinda scary, those weird verse vocals that sound like a goblin under your bed!

Private Plane sounds like Harold Pinter set to music. According to Leer the vocals were recorded so low because he didn't want to wake his girlfriend sleeping in the next room. Leer's Contradictions is well worth hearing.

i want a 12" of the Thomas Leer single. why doesn't someone make one?

right now.

Well I voted for the Greenock lad - though of course we should have had a three way vote with Rental's paralysis.

Not sure about the comment above which suggests that somebody would disagree that these singles weren't the start of d.i.y. I mean obviously there were antecedents right back to the fifties, and there were (unrelated?) scenes, like Metal Urbaine or Suicides, or Chrome. But this was the start, maybe not the only start, but one of them.

i love both but i voted for daniel miller, as on first hearing his music, aged around 12 my perception of music was changed forever. i'm always surprised people don't hear the wry humour in this record.
