milk man

kamerad, Monday, 20 July 2009 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

i've never heard Green Cosmos either so didn't feel authoritative enough to keep it out.

my pick here varies very much from day to day. the aggressive and complex Milk Man or the raw and spastic Revellie, or even the laid back rockiness of Offend Maggie, which has grown immensely on me, could all be my favorites. then again i have probably listened the most to Friend Opportunity.

sonderangerbot, Monday, 20 July 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

I bought Green Cosmos at a Deerhoof gig a few years back. Never really gave it that much time. Quite keyboard heavy, IIRC.

I've a soft spot for the Runners Four. "Wrong Time Capsule" belongs in the best riffs of the decade thread.

Milk Man was the first album where I had that "Oh, I get it!" moment with them, so I'm choosing that one. I think it's held up pretty well too.

after thinking about it, i'm doing the same. Milk Man's gonna walk this.

That would be The Runners Four for me, still my favorite. Though I've not heard The Man..., Holdypaws or Reveille yet.

The Runners Four is fucking amazing, head and shoulders their best.

craigboney (Mister Craig), Monday, 27 July 2009 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'm in the Friend Opportunity minority. :(

Turangalila, Monday, 27 July 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

Very difficult to choose! They have never slacked off in quality.

Maltodextrin, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 07:14 (fifteen years ago)

for me = reveille > apple o > friend opportunity > runners four > milk man > offend maggie > green cosmos

never got into those early ones enough to rate them

6335, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

I think Offend Maggie is underappreciated. Still, based on the poll results, I'm going to go listen to Reveille and Apple O, neither of which I think I've heard before.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 August 2009 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

I think you'll like Apple O more than Reveille, Daniel. It has better melodies imo.

Turangalila, Sunday, 2 August 2009 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm gathering that from the eMusic soundscans. I'll try both, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 August 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

"Apple Bomb" (from Apple O) is such a pretty song.

Turangalila, Sunday, 2 August 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

Reveille was the first one I really got into. That was also the era when they were inviting my band to play basement parties in the Mission with them. Big soft spot for that!

Nate Carson, Monday, 3 August 2009 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

I was a total stan of Deerhoof until The Runners Four, which has some outstanding songs but is kind of underwhelming on the whole. Friend Opportunity and Offend Maggie, somehow, end up boring me. I have no idea how that's possible.

Their run during Reveille, Apple O and Milk Man was fucking awesome, though, and during that year and a half or so they were probably one of the very best bands going in the U.S.

ARAGORN SON OF ARATHORN (Z S), Monday, 3 August 2009 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

I agree with you on Offend Maggie, though that DOES have "Buck & Judy" in it. :)

Friend Opportunity, however, is awesome. It's like their twisted take on The Phantom of the Opera or something.

Turangalila, Monday, 3 August 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

Offend Maggie--am i really the only one??

nerve_pylon, Monday, 3 August 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

Offend Maggie is tite, i think i voted for Reveille tho

wilter, Monday, 3 August 2009 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

i just remember digging two or three songs on it way more than other deerhoof stuff

wilter, Monday, 3 August 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

judging by the results Offend Maggie is criminally underrated. it took some adjustment after FO, which was a lot more colorful and diverse, but once i got into it i realized it has some of their best written pure songs ever

sonderangerbot, Monday, 3 August 2009 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

^yes, otm.

nerve_pylon, Monday, 3 August 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah OM would have been my #2 choice, after Reveille, which I did not expect to win

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 3 August 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

voted Milk Man, tho the stretch of Reveille thru MM is my fave. Still can't totally get w/Runners Four, feels a little limp after the previous three. FO is good, OM is also good, but a little samey dynamics-wise. Sometimes it feels like they're turning into the Stereolab of the post-Stereolab generation

OUCH! let's hope not!

nerve_pylon, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

the amount of differences ppl have speaks very highly to the overall quality of this band.
