trife's rich padgettry (some dude), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

good poll. last year at this time i might have voted dro but gucci's far surpassed him in terms of sheer number of dope songs/verses. altho as much as i love gucci idk if anyone can touch dro when he really gets on a roll on a verse. basically if he drops a hot first bar it's lights out.

of course if we're taking fashion into account there's a clear and decisive winner

Traumatic Brain Injury. Just saying. (J0rdan S.), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah GM might have quantity on his side but i much prefer YD -- really i'm just glad Dro has kind of become pretty respected lyricist (even if in just a good-for-a-ringtone-rapper way) without there being some awful "he's a genius! he's mentally retarded!" extremist debate among bloggers like w/ Gucci

trife's rich padgettry (some dude), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

i feel like this is kinda the perfect time for a head-to-head for them.

dro seems to be going in a new more on-trend direction that some of his die hards aren't really feeling and losing some of his rap crit cred, while gucci is obviously just getting more and more popular with mainstreamers and gaining credulity in those crit circles.

their trajectories are kinda crossing right now, if that makes any sense

P.O.L.O. (Posters Only Lol Once) (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

lol no idea how credulity got in there

meant to write CREDIBILITY

P.O.L.O. (Posters Only Lol Once) (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno if Dro is losing support/cred/something else so hard to define per se -- he's probably dropping good songs and guest verses as consistently as he ever has right now, i think it's just frustrating to watch him, 3 years on from his first album, still lobbing out not-good-enough attempts at lead singles and taking a backseat to Yung LA, so you kinda wonder how long he can just just coast like this, without either landing another hit and dropping an album or getting further and further away from that ever happening.

some dude, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

plus Atlantic shelving the Paper Trail re-release is the first step to confirming my fears that while T.I.'s away everyone on Grand Hustle is just going to languish and spin their wheels

some dude, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

gucci mane's larger-than-life personality stands out more and is more interesting to me but i like young dro's best stuff this year more

gucci's prolific nature is a bit wearying now for me...he's not the kind of rapper i want to listen to endlessly, he works best in small doses. i guess i don't actually have to d/l all those mixtapes tho.

ugh your whole spiel w this is pretty tired Al ... Gucci's a much better & more consistently interesting rapper than Dro right now, no question.

butthurt (deej), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 09:33 (fifteen years ago)

i dont think i ever said "genius" in the entire original piece on gucci btw

butthurt (deej), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 09:34 (fifteen years ago)

but keep riding that fence, its the safest spot

butthurt (deej), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 09:34 (fifteen years ago)

gucci's way more creative at this point ... the breadth of imagery & his pallet of available ways of talking about things is still refreshing itself daily & he's still not repeating himself

whereas Dro's basically coasting on his first album's lyrical innovations

i like both of them but its not even close & if anything im guessing this poll is more about jordan & i evangelizing than anything else (which is part of why i cant stand your stance on this -- its like yr responding to what a few folks are saying on a message board, i dont get any feel for an honest reaction from you on what hes actually doing musically)

butthurt (deej), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 09:37 (fifteen years ago)

& its not even like my position here is some weird one -- i work w/ hundreds of teens & 20somethings @ a ballpark & if you ask them what music they're bumping i bet youd be hard pressed to find anyone still checking Dro singles while Gucci is the biggest shit in the world (or just under Lil Wayne anyway)

butthurt (deej), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 09:41 (fifteen years ago)

it's not so much about punchlines - and this is only okay - as it is the density of gucci's verses. so yes they are incomparable.

by 'peaked' i assume you mean, 'peaked in ilx consciousness,' because dream's best album was already out, and gucci was already clearly a bigger deal, when this poll was made. if anything gucci's stock has fallen slightly, not risen, since summer '09, in terms of artistic achievements

its ok to say 'deej otm'

holy lolson (deej), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

i mean peaked in popular consciousness, dumbass -- Dream's biggest hit/greatest visibility didn't come until later, same way "Wasted" was just breaking when this thread and started and Burrprint/Cold War/State Vs. Radric had an overall higher profile than the mixtapes he had out by that point. i mean, Young Dro had basically gotten all the fans he'll probably ever have, on ilx or otherwise, by well before summer '09, that can not be said of Gucci.

i thought it was implied when you wrote pieces about the dozens of songs of his you loved that you thought the guy was good at his job

Ridin Clean Leadin Dagoons Indaghetto (some dude), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:14 (fourteen years ago)

i mean seriously what is even the point of moving goalposts around inch by inch by inch every day just to 'win' some nonsensical argument you insisted on having in the first place

Ridin Clean Leadin Dagoons Indaghetto (some dude), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 03:15 (fourteen years ago)

also important in this poll is that back when it was started i think there was still this feeling that dro had the potential to continue his greatness -- now... not really at all

i don't agree w/ this insofar as there was really nothing wrong w/ dro continuing on w/ his lyrical innovations because they were so innovating & exciting

at the time of this poll i wasn't thinking "oh well dro is still comparing his cars to fruit juices", it was just that gucci had overwhelmed him w/ sheer material

I mean I'm not the one looking at the results and saying "how silly! how foolish we were!" Like I said, I think it makes sense given the time frame, and I'll still take Dro's best over Gucci's best, although clearly he's got less top shelf material and it's mostly much older.
