im listening to peter walker's RAINY DAY RAGA, and curious about which vanguard records are worth tracking down -- i guess i have an initial focus on longer-form acoustic stuff like PW, sandy bull, robbie basho, and even hamza el din or other ethno-acoustic stuff, but we dont need to restrict the recommendations to that stuff alone...

ooh, also the first Flying Island album. from the 70's. If you like nutty prog/fusion records, that's a good one.

you know i get new vanguard stuff in the mail. you don't want any of it. although the linda ronstadt/ann savoy record i got a few years back was lovely. really pretty cajun tunes.

I forgot the Elizabeth album too! great philly band. and a great psych record. my pal linda cohen was their original drummer!
and i forgot the Serpent Power album too. that's a good one.
And if anyone has a spare copy of the Listening album, I want that. Very pricey and hard to find though.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 01:36 (sixteen years ago)
two other albums that i want to here that i've never heard: the Erik album and the Far Cry album.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 01:43 (sixteen years ago)
i wrote this about the Jeff Monn album once:
Jeff Monn – “She Is There For Me” – Jeff leaves his fiery garage band The Third Bardo and creates a record that is STILL ahead of its time. He doesn’t actually leave the garage. He just makes the first garage rock album for acoustic guitar and full orchestra. And he is just too cool. Biker snarl cool that mixes with horns and strings in ways that an evil flower sniffer like Scott Walker would never have thought to combine them. Jeff also sounds uncannily like Johnny Thunders at times. Or, I guess that should be, Johnny Thunders often sounded uncannily like Jeff Monn. However you slice it, they both had a lazy feline allure that can make a dirty look from one of them feel like a compliment.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 01:48 (sixteen years ago)
xp: the erik record is pretty cool, as i recall, psych-folk-songwriter-y stuff, maybe too many strings or something. i downloaded far cry at the same time as boa constrictor & a natural vine and can't keep them straight in my mind.
― BONE ALL (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 01:48 (sixteen years ago)
180 degrees from most of what's being discussed here but this is a great electro / vocoder breakdance jam:

my other favorite Vanguard is the Best of John Fahey twofer that has real nice acoustic fingerpickin stuff alongside some weird cut-ups and tape pieces.

I love that 31st of February album. I scored a copy on eBay that the seller had kinda underrated the condition. I think he listed it as VG so I was able to get it for like 20 bucks, but it sounds great! actually quite clean!
― Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)
i'll be more specific about the siegel-schwall band. Shake! is such a cool record. definitely one of the best white blues rock albums of that era. their 70's stuff on wooden nickel is kinda so-so, but get a clean copy of shake! and turn it up. sounds amazing!

so what's the early patrick sky stuff like? i saw the s/t and "harvest of gentle clang" today, they were like $7 each. which may be fair, but not knowing anything about the dude i passed.
― BONE ALL (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 23 July 2009 08:08 (sixteen years ago)
i would pass too. he was okay and worth a listen which is why i put him on my search list, but he was a pretty trad folkster early on. if you see something really cheap pick it up. he wrote some pretty tunes.
if you see THIS for sale though, pay ten dollars or more for it cuz it's crazy:

best amazon review ever:
83 of 85 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Patrick Sky speaks, September 12, 2002 By Patrick Sky (Chapel Hill, NC USA) - See all my reviews
For those of you interested I want you to know that I recorded this album over 30 years ago and in spite of selling thousands, I have never received a penny in royalties. I wish to thank all of my fans that have enjoyed the record over the years. If you decide to purchase it I want you to enjoy it.However I want you to know that the recording industry are a bunch a of criminals and have been stealing from the artists for a hundred years. This record is a fine example and is the rule and not the exception. This is why I support "Free" download music because, regardless of how much the recording industry complains, they get 99.9% of the money and the artist never gets a fair shake.
All the best,Patrick Skypl✧✧✧@int✧✧✧.n✧✧

trials & tribulations did not have much sticking power with me.
never seen this one before-Darling & Street "The Possible Dream"Sunshine folk-pop, too sweet for me... just weird that i'd never noticed it before. your hippie girlfriend might like it..
japanese review:Uivazu the 1950s, Erik Darling, who played in folk groups such as the rooftop singers, men and women formed the folk duo Patricia Street "and Darling Street." Today to introduce the debut and only work released in 1975, more than 10 years after they formed, "Impossible Dream".
Recently learned of this fine album, but for the first time I saw being sold at cost of nearly $ 40 in stores. Hey but I end up nowhere interested in price and the feeling of the moment I saw the CD jacket to name two people standing on the sand was placed in a glass of wine and acoustic guitar, Yafuoku while he was forgotten after a few months You'll look at the list price at the amount of about.
Speaking of content, folky pop album hitting great feeling. The basis of folk, Good Times also felt swinging jazzy music, vocals and the overall atmosphere is quaint and soft rock. Although not the flashy, I will be healed by listening to this - it is good

No mention of my new favorites Gary and Randy Scruggs, Man that first record, that first side, I keep playing it over and over, so good. The second record is good too! They only have one song on youtube which is sad. Once I figure out how to make and image go along with a song I'm making a youtube playlist with these guys.

Also the Brothers play on their dad's records, The Earl Scruggs Revue, they aren't aren't vanguard but has anyone heard any of them? Which should I buy?

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/02/business/media/concord-music-group-buys-vanguard-and-sugar-hill.html?ref=arts&_r=0
excerpt:
In an expansion of one of the world’s largest independent music companies, the Concord Music Group — home to Paul McCartney, Paul Simon and a catalog of classic jazz and soul recordings — announced Wednesday that it had acquired two record labels, Vanguard and Sugar Hill.
The labels, being sold by the Welk Music Group, will add to Concord’s already significant collections of folk and country music. Vanguard has long been one of the world’s leading folk labels. In its heyday in the 1950s and ’60s, it released albums by the Weavers, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie; its current roster includes the Indigo Girls and Chris Isaak. Sugar Hill was started in 1978 and has a catalog that includes Dolly Parton and Sarah Jarosz, an acclaimed young folk singer.
The deal will give Concord control of most of Welk’s catalog. Terms were not disclosed, but Concord said in a statement that Kevin Welk, the company’s president, would remain associated with Vanguard and Sugar Hill as their “chief creative.”

Please tell me about the Oregon records.
― (ㅇㅇ) (+ +), Tuesday, 19 December 2023 10:33 (two years ago)
I've only heard their debut Music Of Another Present Era, it's sort of folk/world/jazz, warmer than the contemporary ECM records I've heard. There's a certain amount of free improv too. They avoid the pitfall of being corny, but it's not exactly inviting either - more of an "interesting" record.
