http://pitchfork.com/news/34328-neurosis-sleep-melvins-wino-shrinebuilder/
The band's absurd lineup: Saint Vitus/Obsessed/Spirit Caravan/Hidden Hand guitar hero Scott "Wino" Weinrich, gigantic Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot leader Scott Kelly (pictured), former* Sleep and current Om bassist Al Cisneros, and Melvins drummer Dale Crover. Former Om drummer Chris Hakius was also originally supposed to be involved, but he dropped out around the same time he left Om.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago)
I don't like Neurosis at all, really, and I'm worried it's gonna wind up sounding like just one more Wino band (not like that's a bad thing, but the guy does tend to work an extremely narrow stylistic range). Still, I am tremendously excited for this.

I didn't know this. All this time I didn't notice the fine print on the back of the CD. Why even bother?
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 15 October 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago)
Came out on the 12th October (i.e. Monday just gone) in the UK. I can't speak for elsewhere, but it's definitely out in the UK already.
― krakow, Thursday, 15 October 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)
So wait, is that an "anti-piracy" thing now? Leaving out a track? Hmm.
― & other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 October 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago)
It's not like the fifth track will be disastrously awful enough to ruin the entire album or anything, but still, it's an idiotic move in my opinion. Southern Lord has done the same thing in the past with Boris promos.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 15 October 2009 21:39 (fifteen years ago)
Weird, hadn't seen that. But I certainly could deal with that over the notorious beeped promos.

Cool! Did they play anything other than the album? New material? Stuff by their other bands, other covers?
― StanM, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:29 (fifteen years ago)
nope, the show was about 1 hour + 10 minutes.
in fact, there was no encore. After they finished, Dale said, "That's it. we don't know anymore."
Kinda funny. So yeah, they are basically doing the record straight through (although with more "JAMMING", the show was well over an "hour"), but yeah, they just rock the record straight through with no breaks --- mp encores, but at the same time the whole thing is extended live with Wino guitar solos and shit ... bottom line, they really kicked ass
― Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 November 2009 08:16 (fifteen years ago)
Thx! Really want to see that!
― StanM, Sunday, 15 November 2009 08:26 (fifteen years ago)
:( the show i saw the other night sounded awful. according to the non-wino guitarist, the sound guy "had a digital board and their soundcheck got wiped from it". al's bass was like this ear-bleeding mess, i don't know how he even heard himself up there. i left during the 3rd song

Which night was that? Wasn't Saturday at EB was their first show ever? Were you at the early show? They seemed to sound great during the late one, though Yakuza had some sound issues. Both bands were great.

was at the ny show last night. pretty great all around.
liturgy: they were decent. felt like their material wasn't quite there yet but I could see this band turning into something cool. and their onstage timidity was funny/endearing.
rwake: was not familiar with this band but they killed. stole the show, imo. nasty, sludgy, chaotic. awesome stuff.
shrinebuilder: hadn't listened to any of their material before the show but was into what I heard. basically sounded exactly like what you would imagine given the pedigree, so no surprises, but they were solid. loved their tendency to just ride out heavy grooves for a nice, loooong time. but they played too loud and everything sounded pretty murky as a result.
biggest letdown of the night was the price of my makers on the rocks: $13! wtfffff
― original bgm, Monday, 16 November 2009 14:55 (fifteen years ago)
i missed the first opener, earthride, which sux cuz they seem to be a decent local doom act http://www.myspace.com/earthridedoom. the 2nd band u.s. christmas was a good example of how the extended repetitive jam format can work against you cuz the riffs you're repeating over and over for 12 min suck
― luol deng (am0n), Monday, 16 November 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago)
I pretty much agree with Alan N abt last night's show. Shrinebuilder would have, paradoxically, been heavier if they had been a little less loud, know what I mean? Cisneros was rigged up so sub-sonically that I never had any idea what he was doing even though I could see that he was playing all over the fretboard.
The highlights for me were the many humming solar-echo gtr solos (mostly Wino I think?) and of course Dale's inimitable drumming (bummer that I couldn't get a sight line on him; I love watching that guy drum, looking like a tortured giant trying to break its lava shackles).
Rwake were fucking intense. I want to know more about them. They had no album at the merch table that I could see. I got kind of a mid-80s black flag punk-doom feel from them. with the ranting style of the vocals and the the way the guitarists tortured the bent notes. But couldn't really hear what their second, female, screamer was doing most of the time.

I'd love to see Earthride, hella underrated band
Get the impression that Al's bass playing style/sound needs to be tweaked *just so* else it can totally go to shit - a bad mix totally killed one Om performance I saw
― The Execution Of Garu G (DJ Mencap), Monday, 16 November 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)
i saw om just last month so i kinda knew what kind of sound he should have. i read on another board that wino's got his own sound guy doing the shrinebuilder shows and he likes to go heavy on the bass. maybe the show i saw wasn't a one-off thing?
― luol deng (am0n), Monday, 16 November 2009 16:47 (fifteen years ago)
Great piece in the New York Times this week on Krallice and Shrinebuilder.
Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/17/arts/music/17shrine.html?ref=music
On Sunday at Le Poisson Rouge, Shrinebuilder played an overwhelming show — almost meditatively focused, one whose afterimage is likely to stay with those who saw it. It’s a band of willful musicians in their 40s from around the country who have given their adult lives to slow-and-heavy music: Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Scott Weinrich of the Obsessed and Saint Vitus, Al Cisneros of Om and Dale Crover of the Melvins. Shrinebuilder is as loosely based in doom-metal as Krallice is in black-metal: it might be the starting place, but it’s not the ending place. If Krallice’s music — with its bright distortion, sprinting drums and needling guitars — suggests insanely crosshatched surfaces, Shrinebuilder’s is all solid interiors. Its tempos were slow and cruising, and its sound was loud but spacious and clear, with Mr. Weinrich playing slow, sliding leads over Mr. Kelly’s low-pitched riffs. All band members sang in their varied voices, from Mr. Cisneros’s dire, syncopated monotone to Mr. Kelly’s gruff gurgle. But none of them yelled. This music, and their demeanor, was some sort of Zen lesson: these were teachers who could quell the class with calm but decisive gestures. In a set that lasted about an hour and a quarter, the band elongated all the songs from its new, self-titled first album, and played a cover of Joy Division’s droning “24 Hours” — a perfect and surprising choice. (It’s hard to imagine the two Scotts, stolid American grizzlies, as secret Anglophiles.) As the last song, “Pyramid of the Moon,” swept to its end and Mr. Crover socked the last beat, the crowd erupted almost involuntarily, as if it had been punched.

man, that nytimes article had me groaning. like, another "we all know metal is kinda dumb... but not THIS BAND" article, really?
but it's actually one of the better metal reads in a mainstream publication I've come across lately. pretty informative and not condescending. (to the genre or the reader.)
expect more yuppos at the next shrinebuilder show, lolz.
― original bgm, Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago)
^ sorry man, but you're wrong. Ben Ratliff, the writer of that article, is definitely not of the "we all know metal is kinda dumb... but not THIS BAND" school, if such a thing even exists. he's on record as being a pretty big champion of the genre.
