springtime for hitler?

ian, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

it turns out i really don't know very many show tunes! i do like all of the following a great deal:

"i know him so well" (chess)
"don't cry for me, argentina" (evita)
"the frug" and "hey! big spender" (sweet charity <---i played in the pit when my HS performed this so i'm somewhat partial to all the music here)
"they were you" (the fantasticks)

That's about as many responses as I expected.

worthy nu-musical contenders:

Avenue Q - "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist", "The Internet Is For Porn", "It Sucks To Be You", "If You Were Gay"
Wicked - "Popular", "Defying Gravity", "I'm Not That Girl"

Dan, make with the full list. I know you can.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

A heterosexual man's memory:

I Got A Horse Right Here, His Name is Paul Revere
It's A Hard Knock Life For Us
I Thought About The Game
Dames
101 Lbs of Fun
Doe a Deer
What's The Buzz
Try Not To Get Worried
39 Lashes
Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

My list would definitely include:

"Maria" - West Side Story
"Climb Every Mountain" - The Sound of Music
"Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" - Avenue Q
"And I Am Telling You" - Dreamgirls
"Somewhere" - West Side Story
"Brand New Day" - The Wiz
"Bali Hai" - South Pacific

It is likely something from Fiddler, My Fair Lady and A Light at the Piazza would feature as well. It's also difficult for me not to make a list of all West Side Story music as that's far and away my favorite show.

I did but I hate Broadway and love Hollywood/not a big theater guy and worship film. So anything I'd contribute would come from the big screen save for the few cast recordings I have. I kinda dig Company but goddamn grow some buttcheeks, Sondheim!

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know Sweeny Todd that well otherwise I'd include something from that.

Yeah, I arbitrarily did a one-per-show rule, otherwise "Tonight" and "America" would've joined "Somewhere."

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

yes def those, plus "Cool" and "When You're A Jet" and "Gee, Officer Krupke" and "A Boy Like That/I Have A Love"...

That show rules so hard

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, the worst song in the show is "One Hand, One Heart". Wow.

Man this thread is killing me. Only 10 for the whole genre? Kidding, right? Here's 10 just for Cole Porter:

Anything Goes
I Concentrate On You
Night And Day
Love For Sale
Don't Fence Me In
From This Moment On
Just One Of Those Things
I've Got You Under My Skin
Let's Do It, Let's Fall In Love
You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

I know it's 'opera' but there are several songs on Porgy and Bess (especially as sung by Ella and Louis) that would make my top ten, 'Ain't Necessarily So', 'Summertime', 'I Got Plenty of Nothin' and there are an equal number of songs from 'My Fair Lady' and 'Gigi'.

Why the quotes around "opera"? That's what "Porgy and Bess" is.

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

It is an opera but in a very American vernacular that, by the time you get to the recording by Ella and Satchmo, has as much in common w/showtunes as with Verdi, imso. I mean no offense and I'm not that hung up on nomenclature but I tend to think of P&B as 'showtunes'.
