Between 1978 and 1988, they had at least one song on each album named after a girl (and then once again in the 1990s with "Melanie").

Maybe Africa was a girl.

Weren't these the band's studio nicknames for each other?

Were they? I'd never heard that.

So I'm gonna have to vote for "Lorraine," the other girl song from their best album Hydra.

Is that really what 99 is about? If so, I like it so much more now.

It's probably an urban legend but I heard it was dedicated to the girl who played agent99 on "Get Smart"

It would not surprise me. Both 99 and "Rosanna" were written by David Paich, who based the latter on Rosanna Arquette; herself an indirect 1960s TV reference. her grandfather Cliff was "Charley Weaver" on the original HOLLYWOOD SQUARES from 1966 to his death in 1974.

"Rosanna". Although "Pamela" is a good and often ignored later gem.

"Rosanna" often gets mentioned as sounding like the Spinners. Even Toto, at the time, said they were trying to sound like them. Any thoughts on this. I do hear a little bit.

Yeah, the breakdown finger-snapping part really does sound like The Spinners. Never really thought about it before.
