I saw a guy wearing a black label society tshirt in my town last week. He looked exactly like one of those dudes in that picture. Not a normal look in Hamilton, Scotland, I assure you.

is there a UK equivalent to Guitar Center? (the native habitat of black label fans)

yeah but guitar center is sort of like the wal-mart of guitar shops if that makes sense, huge national big box chain...

but anyway certain bands like BLS and dream theater and for some reason terry bozzio from zappa and the drummer from dave matthews are revered there

I really had no idea BLS were so popular. Every shitty metal band I know tries to sound like Pantera cos they think it's easy, so they get my vote.

This should be a poll. Which of the following is the worst idea
News from beyond yonder...

Stay tuned for a BLS, Mudvayne, Static X tour this summer of 2009 coming to a venue near you!!

Zakk Wylde and Gretchen Wilson recorded a cover of Stevie Nicks and Don Henley’s "Leather And Lace" for a country music
compilation due out in 2009.

Zakk also met with Ozzy in mid September concerning the new Ozzy album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

Pantera fans are pretty wide-ranging in their tastes, tending to listen to a whole bunch of different metal bands and like Pantera more than the others; BLS fans are a weird sort of biker cult, it seems to me. As someone who's been listening to mostly metal for the last 25 years, I really don't get what there is to like about BLS. Their songs are an awful soup of stolen Alice In Chains riffs, and Wylde cannot sing worth a shit.

BTW, Neuname, you realize that's a photo of Zakk Wylde and Dimebag Darrell in that photo accompanying the poll, and not just two random BLS fans, right?

Also, current rumor is that Wylde has been fired as Ozzy's guitarist and he didn't even know about it until stories started showing up in the press.

I hate BLS. Ever since that stupid Maiden shit went down, they and their fans can all go fuck themselves. The music sucks too. For Pantera fans you can at least argue they have decent taste, though a black mark against them would have to be the fact that ONE OF THEIR FANS KILLED THE GODDAMN LEAD GUITARIST!!!

yeah to a degree but that's not even a small percentage of the business for your average guitar center

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

I know someone who used to work at a guitar center and his descriptions of the way salespeople are paid minimum wage plus a percentage and how they're pitted against each other to hit these stupid weekly targets made it sound like an exploitation-driven snakepit of a workplace.

A friend of a friend from a large-ish band who shall remain nameless made a hilarious and obnoxious prank recording in a San Diego Guitar Center- he walked in (with hidden mic inside) and pretended to be a suburban rich kid and said "My parents want to support my creativity and they've told me that I can start my own band and they will pay for it all. What do I need?" and the salesperson proceeds to just upsell, upsell, upsell like crazy for thirty minutes, piling up this vast mountain of drums and amps and guitars and pedals and effects and everything "Monster-Cable" this and "Deluxe Chrome edition" that etc. Finally at the end the sales person is like "What's your band called, dude?" and he deadpans "Warrior." and the salesperson tries to play along and says "Cooooool, that's a sweet name dude." Then at the end when it's time to pay he says he left his wallet in his car and just leaves. So mean to the poor schmuck but it perfectly illustrates who this store is for and how it works.

goole, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah. i mean there's been some decent dudes that work at guitar centers, i try not to go there but def have every once in awhile.

honestly after a while you figure out the secret, it's kinda like home depot or target, you assume shit is SO MUCH cheaper cuz it's so big and overwhelming but it's really not...

best guitar center story i have:

i was looking at getting a new bass rig and we were looking at some amps and cabinets...i said...well this says 8 ohm but the head is a 4ohm, he's like "oh ohms don't really matter"...at that point i was like..um i'm going somewhere else.

twin cities are lucky to have a lot of good indie stores though, so i can totally see the need for guitar centers in a lot of cities and towns....

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

I just hate Guitar Center for the nasty way they unload overpriced crap on suckers- I recall seeing a young working class Latino guy and his pregnant wife and he was there to buy a cable for his gear and the saleman was hardselling them into buying a "MonsterCable" for 30 bucks instead of a perfectly fine Hosa 1/4" cable for 7 bucks and the customer was literally looking at the cable and then at his pregnant wife with the worried it's-too-expensive look on her face and the salesman was running the "trust me m'am, this one is the safest choice" routine on him and he caved and spent the 30 bucks. Yuck. It was a corny, cartoonish situation that sounds implausible when I type it out but the lived experience of it was gross.

Yeah duh all retail works that way but the desperation of the employees is at used-car-salesman levels while the profits are so teensy that it just seems really not worth it.

Are websites like Musician's Friend and Sweetwater Sound killing them? Or is it a diff. bracket?

I can't believe that no one has touched on the real problem with Guitar Center, which is that if you go to one you have to listen to the sound of 20 different people playing guitar at once. I may not even try to expand on that, as I try not to relive the experience too often, but imagine all of the demographics mentioned above (weekend Clapton-worshipper, 4th-tier metal shredder, Satriani/Vai guy, whatever 12-16 year old beginning guitar kids are into ...) playing at once and competing to be heard over each other. This is happening ALL THE TIME mind you.

grandavis, Thursday, 23 July 2009 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

unfortunately a lot of ppl who were at small music gear stores are pricks too. see the time i asked a guy in a random store who wouldn't unbox a $150 delay pedal apparently because i didn't look like i could pay for it or something. fuck that guy, his store closed and i saw him liquidating guitars on ebay--he had a guitar i wanted but i bought it from someone else.

nah dude its way way grosser than std retail - they sell those poor dumb kids on how much commission they'll make w/o mentioning that your wage is faded against the commission. which means that until your earned commission exceeds minimum wage, thats all you get (and i think that the commission rate is like 2% on avg, so as long as captain high school can sell $100000 a month hes well on his way to making $24K a year!

which explains the hyper upsell approach. its called desperation.

i don't know much about black label society, but pantera fans circa 1996 were some of the biggest knuckledragging idiots on the planet. see, this was the tour where phil nightly thanked metallica for releasing the piece of shit "load" and proclaimed themselves the kings of metal (something i'm sure that Manowar did not approve of).

now granted in retrospect they were right about load, but it was pretty sad considering how bad the great southern trendkill was. their fans saw it fit to use this as proof that pantera was the greatest most extreme band ever...and while, at the time, they were pretty extreme for the mainstream, it got old fast.

i'd get in arguments about how bad their last two albums were and be told i 'couldn't handle them' despite having albums by cryptopsy and dying fetus in my collection.

i still like cowboys and vulgar...but i'd rather listen to exhorder's slaughter in the vatican anyday. totally underrated.

dime's death was a tragedy tho :(

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

kings of metal? hahaha

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

yea, as far as i know the only band that has ever been allowed to proclaim themselves kings of metal was Manowar, and it was extremely undeserved.

phil's obsession with being 'extreme' wound up causing them to downplay their melodic tendencies to the point where they were pretty much nonexistent on far beyond driven and great southern trendkill. then he must have realized fans liked some melody and they tried to infuse it on reinventing the steel but that album reinvented sedation because that shit was flat out boring.

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

and man, how gross is the original cover to far beyond driven? (nsfw, I guess)

like I see this band listed as a fav on lots of people's FBs and yet I'll be damned if I ever hear anybody talk about them or if I could even hum a tune of theirs. I love guitar squeals as they appear on some of my fav metal discs but if banning them would result in a Zakk Wylde-less world then I would be prepared to make that sacrifice.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 8 February 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)
