Some of you already mentioned Coldplay, but surprisingly no one said anything about "Viva la Vida," unless you count Geir's "Every single Coldplay song" vote.
I can't think of many, if any, mainstream rock songs from the past decade that were as well produced as that one.
― kshighway, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, and: Animal Collective - "Brother Sport"
― kshighway, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 21:56 (fifteen years ago)
i like "Viva La Vida," but not as much as "Clocks," and even as far as Coldplay goes it doesn't seem like a good one to single out as a 'rock song'
― some dude, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago)
Coldplay *is* a rock band, so I just picked my favorite song of theirs. While I would agree that an argument could be made that "Viva la Vida" is not a strong representative of rock as a music genre, I do think it is the closest great song Coldplay has to a rock song. (I strongly disagree that "Clocks" is a better choice.) Perhaps there are aspects of "Violet Hill" that make it easier for one to categorize it as a rock song, but it is not a great song.
― kshighway, Friday, 24 July 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)
Either way though, I don't really care about Coldplay beyond "Viva la Vida." :-)
Actually, I don't care about most mainstream rock. An argument could be made that the post(-post-post-) grunge that dominated a lot of rock radio during the 2000s is some of the worst "popular" rock music ever made. It's still kind of astonishing to me that people still want to hear shit that sounds like impoverished, pathetic, and lifeless variations on Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, instead of listening to the original grunge acts or, you know, listening to something that's far more vibrant and rewarding. Granted, most of the non-post-grunge mainstream rock acts of the 2000s was terrible too, but there's still the occasional good tune on "alternative" rock radio stations.
Thankfully, terrestrial radio will be dead to many of us at some point during the 2010s, if most of us have not already given it up. (I admit that I myself have not; I still like something to listen to when I'm in my car, and I find that the radio is a good way of keeping up with the pop charts, which, unlike the mainstream rock charts, generally produce great songs here and there.)
― kshighway, Friday, 24 July 2009 00:31 (fifteen years ago)
So I just went out to the supermarket, and lo and behold, heard "Clocks" over the loudspeaker for the first time in a while. Quite excellent, actually.
Also, to add to the ongoing list:
Green Day - "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"Incubus - "Drive"U2 - "Vertigo"Weezer - "Pork and Beans"

― ehhh p. diddy miss (k3vin k.), Friday, 24 July 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
it is, and it makes it plain why people would increasingly flock to country music in recent years to hear good rock music.
― scott seward, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:19 (fifteen years ago)
Or indie rock, amirite?
― kshighway, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:43 (fifteen years ago)
Seriously though, most of the good work in "rock" qua rock is being done in indie, right? I think so. If you look at something like the recent Pazz & Jop critics polls, the majority of the rock music they rate highly comes from indie. Not to say that something that is critically-lauded is automatically good, but I do agree with the Pazz & Jop critics generally: for good rock music, indie is where it's at.
― kshighway, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)
Ten seconds until my previous post is eviscerated...
scott, do you think better rock music is coming out of country than indie? (I don't really listen to country; this is a sincere question.)
Secondary question, for everyone here, how much longer do you think it will be before, because of the internet, there will be no more "mainstream rock"? (Niches, blah blah blah.)
― kshighway, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:49 (fifteen years ago)
If mainstream rock dies, I don't see the internet having anything to do with it. It'll probably be from music fans thinking "Why should I listen to new rock when old classic rock is a thousand times better?"
Stereophonics - "Dakota"U2 - "Vertigo"The Bravery - "Honest Mistake"The Killers - "Somebody Told Me"

"scott, do you think better rock music is coming out of country than indie?"
yes. indie rock, or at least american indie rock, is mostly horrible. and has been for years. there is interesting stuff on the fringes. and on stoner rock labels and doom rock labels and metal labels, but country music, very very popular country music, has created more memorable "rocking" music than 99% of indie rock labels or major label rock bands. my favorite modern rock band for the past decade has been katatonia and nobody in this country knows who they are and i don't care because i no longer care about consensus or mass movements or agreed cultural acceptance. i believe in financial health for THEM, but beyond that i simply don't care about the viability of rock as a movement or a message or even if people listen to it at all. i cheer the destruction of traditional means of selling and presenting music and art. i hope it all goes down in flames.

Fair enough, scott. Could you just expand on this part a little: "i cheer the destruction of traditional means of selling and presenting music and art. i hope it all goes down in flames." Why do you feel this way?
