Sorry to be boring, but "Famous in a Small Town."

"Guilty in Here," although "Desperation" is close.

Gunpowder and Lead

I listened to "Famous In A Small Town" more than any other song in 2007, so that one. I love the verse with the backwards guitar, the one about putting on the tight jeans: the way it erupts with the drum roll is glorious. It's like the inverse of quiet desperation.

I just voted for "Down" because even though I like "Gunpowder & Lead" and the title track and "Dry Town" a lot, after repeated listens (to the whole album), "Down" stands out for me. But I am already regretting not voting for "Gunpowder & Lead" because it's so great. I wish I could find more country to like.

But "Down" is at least my second favorite. I like discovering the flute-like loop at the beginning and end of it, which is very late Beatles sounding, not that that's really the main reason I like the song, but it's an added bonus.

I recently saw hear open for Kenny Chesney in Houston. When she finally played Gunpowder and Lead, every girl in the crowd went crazy, more so than any other song. I actually enjoyed her much more than Kenny Chesney.

"Desperation"

"Desperation" would be my pick for her finest solo write and definitely would have gotten my vote here. The first three tracks are unassailable, though, and I'm not surprised to see they won the day.

Among the 0's, "Easy from Now On" deserved a vote. Likely my favorite of her many covers and, in retrospect, maybe a bit of a statement about whose lineage she saw herself in?
