would party with parrotheads

mizzell, Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

Gotta be the Parrotheads. They're a scourge.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Why are they called Parrotheads?

The common stereotype is of a person wearing a Hawaiian shirt, flip-flops and board shorts, or a grass skirt and a coconut bra while drinking a margarita. Many fans are members of Parrot head clubs. The general theme of being a Parrothead is one of relaxation, even while working. Some prefer the spelling "Parrotthead," reflecting the double "t" in Buffett.

At least it's too cold in the UK for this to have ever taken off.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

The worst thing about Phish fans is that they combine all the worst aspects of hippies, super-entitled upper-middle-class suburban kids and nerds. They affect this carefree love-and-brotherhoodness, but they've got Mommy and Daddy's money to spend traveling around the country to concerts, and when they gather in groups they get all Asperger's about remembering exactly what songs led into what other songs on the third night in Denver in '99 or whatever. I used to work with a whole gang of them. Horrible.

Third night in Denver in '99 was epic, btw.
Kidding, never seen Phish, though the Phish fans I've met have been not too bad -- I mean, the thing about this question is that these fans are the BEST fans in a lot of ways. Or maybe I'm just talking about Phish fans -- but fans of that band are REALLY into the music. They love seeing live music, they love going to concerts, they love being in a big crowd of fans ... I get that they're annoying, but in terms of music fans, I don't think they're that bad.

Wait, Dan, did you see this?

Nadirah Shakoor is an American vocalist, best known for her work in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, which she joined in 1995, and is still touring with them as the featured female vocalist. "Nod To The Storyteller" is Nadirah's tribute to Jimmy Buffett, who for the last 13 years has featured her as part of his show. Prior to that she was the female lead singer of the hip-hop group Arrested Development, of which she was a member from 1993 until 1995.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

haha I did not

How annoying must your band be if you would flee them to go join Jimmy Buffett?

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

And then STAY with him. Then again, regular paying gig.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I should stop fronting and admit that if I was offered a job as a backup singer for practically anyone, I would take it as long as the money was right

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Thursday, 23 July 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

haha, that is weird. still, i bet being in Jimmy Buffet's band is pretty relaxing and the money is probably sweet. xpost

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 23 July 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

to get all nate silver for a second, buffett fans trend older and probably richer so in terms of demographics are more likely to hold views on the world that are disgusting. but maybe parrottheadery is a moderating variable against that kind of thing, iono.

a Phish concert = hanging out with a bunch of high retards, Jimmy Buffett = a bunch of drunk retards, Dave Matthews = a bunch of sober retards. ergo Dave Matthews ftl

een, Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

you might get more hallucinogens at a phish show, but i feel the drunk/high ratio is pretty constant between audience bases jesus christ why am i even thinking about this

goole, Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

haha yeah none of those college dudes at dmb shows drink i guarantee you that.

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

dave shows would have the worst booze by far and plenty of it

tylerw, Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

i would literally go to anything at red rocks i've always wanted to go there ever since seeing that u2 video when i was a little kid

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

you know, i thought the same thing when i moved out here, but i don't actually enjoy shows there that much. might be because i've always had sorta crappy seats. great view though! and those red rocks!

tylerw, Thursday, 23 July 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

kidna funny that so far nobody has anything bad to say about DMB fans

girlish in the worst sense of that term (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 July 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

what else can you say other than "sorry dude, your favorite band is a dick"?

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Thursday, 23 July 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

Nobody is willing to put up with them long enough to form an opinion? I think of these three groups, the DMB fans are probably the best to deal with on a one-to-one basis. They get more annoying in large numbers. Just one obsessive Phish fan can annoy you to death.

mraz also playing red rocks soon btw

tylerw, Thursday, 23 July 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

jimmy buffett fans and phish fans seem to be more good-time folks. DMB fans seem to be more serious about how deep DMB is.

"he said...all things passantino the night" (omar little), Thursday, 23 July 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

Are Jack Johnson fans pretty much identical to DMB fans? Because i've never known a DMB fan but i've known enough Jack Johnson fans to know i'd never want to hang out with one.

myndbloom, Friday, 24 July 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

I'm voting Phish btw.

xhuxk, Friday, 24 July 2009 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

DMB always plays three shows at the Gorge in WA every August and all the fratty beer pong dudes at the lolcollege I work at seem to be way into this, enough that the phrase "Dave at the Gorge" is a major douchebag signifier.

I bet these dudes are into Jack Johnson to some degree, but I imagine that he's biggest with the relatively sensitive contemplative guy at the frat who tries to woo the ladies with his sandals, shell necklace and guitar playing instead of the usual louts who prefer using alcohol alone.

joygoat, Friday, 24 July 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

There were two serious radiohead fans at the last placed that I worked. I thought that they were both pretty cool as individuals. They were only annoying when they talked about Radiohead.

Dave Matthews fans are pretty low key and subtly annoying, compared to Buffett fans.

You've never read Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated. then?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

Does Buffett noodle?

Anyway, I saw a Jimmy Buffett-inspired band play a free show in a local park last week, and God did it suck. It's a red flag when the whole group is wearing shorts and flip-flops, it's a redder flag when at least two of the songs were about Jimmy Buffett, in addition to the Buffett covers. They kept talking about the upcoming Buffett show in Chicago, at least between songs about drinking tequila in Cabo. Unctuous. I do have one good friend who goes to Buffett shows with his whole extended family. I think it's a vacation mindset sort of thing. Like, a week off over the course of a single night. In the end I'm not sure that's so bad, the escapist mindset. These folks flock to Buffett, drink and play dress up. It seems pretty harmless. DMB fans just dude around, too, but the drinking gets frat-party ugly. Phish fans can be really nice, and like to share water and other supplies, but they do take that ridiculous music awfully seriously.

I do sense that people tend to grow out of Phish and DMB, for what that's worth, and grow into Buffett. And from experience that DMB is the act most likely to draw viscerally negative reaction from women (for whatever reason - whitecap aversion?). Dunno, it's a real toss up of upchuck rock.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 14:46 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I should hate Phish but their fans seem okay. There is a Jimmy Buffett fan in every office and they are always a nice person. I said it before, maybe people think lobsters on people's heads is annoying, but it appears to me that Buffett writes real songs. I don't know any Dave Matthews Band fans, who are they, college students?
