if u r a UKer tell us all about the worst summer festival you ever went to, the best one, the worst band you ever saw at one, and the best band. okay?

scott seward, Saturday, 25 July 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

if you feel like it.

summer festivals here are mostly about hot muddy beer and sunstroke. if you can find one with shade it is recommended.

Agreed. The otherwise ridiculous Lollapalooza 1993 in Irwindale had a patch of trees near the second stage and I remember chilling under one of them while idly watching/listening to Dos and Thurston Moore's sets.

worst: i've not really had a bad experience at a summer festival - maybe V97 just because getting out of there at the end of the night in the pouring rain trying to get on a bus sucked. i was supposed to go to Reading for the day in 2002 but bailed...girlfriend at the time was already there so not pleased, then later when she was trying to drive off the site a bunch of drunken lairy people surrounded her car banging on the windows etc. so the guilt i already felt got ramped up to 11 ha ha (no that i would've been any real use in that situation)

best: first glastonbury probably cos of the novelty, good weather, it was back when 100,000 people could rock up without paying...

Worst...Reading 1987 - The Mission, Fields Of The Neph, Magnum, The Enid, Vow Wow, All About Eve, about 50 lame-o Marquee support bands (ones who went on to be famous : Quireboys, Thunder...aargh). Yes I know some of you will be creaming over some of that line-up, but believe me the Neffers DID NOT WORK at 2pm in the sun. Alice Cooper was the big draw but he had that Rambo guy on guitar at the time and it was shite. The only enjoyable bands all weekend were Status Quo and the Georgia Satellites, which should give you some indication of the general standard.

Best...um...

Worst band seen...has to be The Bolshoi.

Best...Dio, Donington 1983! Yes I am old.

I know someone who was at that Reading and he said it was the last good Reading before it went utter shite.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 25 July 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

He was wrong! Although the next year was the infamous Saturday night line-up of Starship, Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler so I probably got off lightly. Reading 1987 - I recall some kind of running pitched battle between Eskimos (Mission fans) and whatever Sisters Of Mercy fans were called. I think Hussey and Eldritch were having some feud through the pages of the music press and the fans got caught up in it on the campsite. Clods of earth flying everywhere! The Nephilim fans stayed out of it, as I guess did the Rose Of Avalanche fans.

Matt #2, Saturday, 25 July 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

oh maybe it was the next year he said was the last good line up. He was at both years anyway I think as well as 89. did the mission play in 89?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 25 July 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

whatever was the last "rawk" lineup anyway was the "last year it was good". sad thing is he was probably only about 18 or 19 then and not an old fart.

Aw man, I used to love those fellows!
