Who would want to listen to a whole album of power ballads?! I know, probably millions of people...Nazareth get my vote for the greatest ever version of "Love Hurts".

Matt #2, Monday, 27 July 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

No REO Speedwagon, no credibility.

anagram, Monday, 27 July 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

omg "When The Children Cry"

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

Still love Tom Keifer's singular croak, so "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)".

EZ Snappin, Monday, 27 July 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

Feel Like Makin' Love isn't a power ballad

velko, Monday, 27 July 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

When I saw the words "power ballads", Saigon Kick just started playing in my head.

27. More Than Words - Extreme

^^^blared this from the car today

DOES ANYONE IN THIS BITCH LIKE OMC (Tape Store), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

Evidently "Sister Christian" cost too much in licensing?

I went with "High Enough", because I love singing the verses (they're in my register) and then floundering on the chorus. And I love the rhyme of "anymore" with "anymore", "close the door", and "know for sure" ("for shore").

Sugar Slam (Euler), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

I really fucking hate "When I See You Smile". Grrr.

The link for Kix doesn't work. This is pretty good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztMY2uRczsg

It's between Kix and Cinderella and maybe Styx. Def Leppard and the Scorpions were robbed.

Sundar, Monday, 27 July 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

The best song on there is I Want To Know What Love Is. But it's not the best "power ballad" because by law, they have to be by hair metal bands.

By that definition, it's Skid Row I Remember You.

I guess licensing was too high for Motley Crue Home Sweet Home & Bon Jovi Wanted Dead Or Alive. Those were two of the biggest.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 27 July 2009 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the Foreigner is good too.

Sundar, Monday, 27 July 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

No REO Speedwagon, no credibility.

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 27 July 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

omg "When The Children Cry"

IIRC Chuck Eddy claimed had a follow up song on the next album called "When the Children Die"

Ned Raggett, Monday, 27 July 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

I think the 'lol I am a douch song request shouted at concert' should REALLY be for 'Silent Lucidity,' don't you?

"Love Song" just for the intro alone.

http://tinyurl.com/ggggst (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 27 July 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

Those were totally the DL and Scorpions tracks I had in mind too!

Sundar, Monday, 27 July 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

(Esp "Bringing On the Heartbreak" for DL. I think Kris once posted something about the way that Joe Elliott's accent really comes out when he sings "Takin' all the best of me", like his public facade is completely dropping and all the pathos is breaking through.)

Sundar, Monday, 27 July 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

going strictly on what's on offer here: I Remember You vs Ballad of Jayne

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

headed for a heartbreak vs. more than words for me

the latter is the corniest shit ever but that melody is just plain awesome. the former is a much more proper power ballad. "beth" as power ballad is totally not workin tbh.

Trey Tsongas (J0hn D.), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

12. When The Children Cry - White Lion
27. More Than Words - Extreme

^^^nothing power about these ballads imo

omar little, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

in re Feel Like Makin' Love, Beth, I Want To Know What Love Is et al I kinda like that they make this nod to establishing, like, the protohistory of the genre before getting right down to the business of packaging up some tracks they could get for cheap

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

1. Lady - Styx

Wouldn't really call this a power ballad. Good tune though.

2. Love Hurts - Nazareth

Vomit.

5. I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner

Foreigner's ballads were excessively annoying as even when they tried to be uplifting they sounded sterile and bland.

7. Amanda - Boston

My vote. Insanely catchy chorus.

9. Carrie - Europe

Europe had no right to exist.

10. Is This Love - Whitesnake

i'll admit it's a guilty pleasure even though its such a baaaaaaaaad song.

14. Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison

Did they write this around a campfire or something? This song should be played alongside "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport"

15. Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone) - Cinderella
16. Headed For A Heartbreak - Winger

Yeeech. wish I could have those removed from my mind.

19. When I See You Smile - Bad English

ugh i had forgotten it for over a decade. where are those men in black zappy things.

20. Love Song - Tesla

Interesting opening, then launches into typical Tesla boredom.

21. I Remember You - Skid Row

Skid Row actually did ballads right, but this one pales in comparison to "Wasted Time".

25. Silent Lucidity - Queensryche

Overplayed, but still classic. a little pretentious but isn't that redundant with the 'Ryche?

27. More Than Words - Extreme

the band didn't even like this song, as they said Pornograffiti (solid album) only went 2x platinum because housewives bought it for More than Words. I still like the song tho and for whatever reason performing it in public gets you play. (like...sex play).

30. I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) - Meat Loaf

Great tune but overplayed to my ears

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

That Whitesnake song is far and away my favorite thing of theirs, to the point where I have considered buying their album multiple times even though I know I would hate it just for that one song.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

Europe had no right to exist.

You and Don Rumsfeld.

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

i still don't know why i like it. i mean everything about it screams 'run' to me...the cheesy harmonized guitars after the first verse, cheesy chorus....yet whenever i made 80's mix cds, that song was on there :)

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

that compilation is a real cavalcade of crap.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

voted kix in the end, that thing used to scare the crap out of me

Trey Tsongas (J0hn D.), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

So did I.

Sundar, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

(Um, I mean I voted for Kix, not that I scared the crap out of you.:P)

"Nobody rocked your world like the legendary artists of Monster Ballads POWER BALLADS!!!"

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 2 August 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

I don't like any of these songs, but I also don't hate any of them either.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 2 August 2009 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

"Hysteria" is the best monster/power ballad. Out of what's polled, "Amanda" is prolly the best song but Boston isn't metal so I had to go with Queensryche.

billstevejim, Sunday, 2 August 2009 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

it didn't say "Metal Ballads Polled"

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Sunday, 2 August 2009 07:07 (sixteen years ago)

matter of fact most power ballads aren't by 'metal' acts per se...i don't consider most of this list 'metal'.

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Sunday, 2 August 2009 07:08 (sixteen years ago)

It first and foremost followed the track listing of the compilation, I guess. :)

I plan to do another power ballad poll using the high finishers and suggestions from this thread. Feel free to nominate more that you like or think are significant in this thread.
