PJ.

At one time I really liked that Placebo cover of DM; I'm guessing the singing hadn't really registered with me or something.

I am leaning towards "Race - In" at the moment with "God Given", "This Is Love", "Loose Fit", "I Against I" and "Then" in close contention. I'm kind of lolling at how these were all put together, though; clearly the algorithm is riding much more on Massive Attack than Mos Def, but how did Nick Cave and PJ Harvey get in there? Also I know I have a lot of DM on my phone but 2 songs plus 2 Dave Gahan solo songs PLUS a DM song covered by someone else? lol

"And It Rained All Night" - Thom Yorke

Almost voted for this. My favorite track on Thom's album.

I'd love to know what the algorithm behind Genius is. The choices it makes are endlessly fascinating to me; does it privilege tracks with higher play counts? Is it doing a crosscheck based on numerical values assigned to each song after analysis, or is it using an internal database that connects artists and genres? Perhaps a combination of the two?

I never look at my Genius thing. I don't even really know what it is. Is it supposed to "know what you want to listen to"? I just checked it. It has mostly indiepop and stuff I didn't download recently and haven't listened to at all. In fact, I didn't know, and am appalled to find out, that I have a Tilly and the Wall song on my computer. Here's my list to prove how pitchfindie and 2007 my Genius is:

1. Butcher Boy - There Is No One Who Can Tell You Where You've Been
2. GoodBooks - Leni (Crystal Castles Vs. GoodBooks)
3. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - This Love is Fucking Right!
4. Mojave 3 - Breaking the Ice
5. Pelle Carlberg - I Love You, You Imbecile
6. Good Shoes - The Photos On My Wall
7. Cass McCombs - That's That
8. Shout Out Louds - Tonight I Have to Leave It
9. Midlake - Roscoe (Beyond the Wizard Remix)
10. Herman Dune - I Wish That I Could See You Soon
11. Math & Physics Club - Darling, Please Come Home
12. The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored (Rabbit in the Moon Remix) LOL
13. M83 - Graveyard Girl
14. CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above
15. Butcher Boy - I Know Who You Could Be
16. Feist - My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Classic Mix)
17. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Orchard of My Eye
18. Tilly and the Wall - Beat Control
19. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry
20. Visage - Fade to Grey
21. Chairlift - Bruises
22. The Thrills - Not For All the Love in the World (Sebastian Tellier Remix)
23. Smashing Pumpkins - The End is the Beginning is the End (Rabbit in the Moon Remix) LOLOL
24. Lonely, Dear - I Am John <--I HAVE NEVER LISTENED TO THIS SONG
25. Sambassadeur - Kate

ok i just checked my genius list and it seems to be recommendations based on stuff i've bought off itunes, which is a...very unrepresentative selection of my music taste.

lex pretend, Monday, 27 July 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

I voted Inner City btw

the who cares (okamax), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

The things on my list that I bought from iTunes would be the Gahan album and Robyn; everything else was a manual ad to iTunes. (I can't remember about the Yorke album, actually; I'll have to double-check that when I get home.)

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

ftr, I have an aversion to buying things from iTunes (I've only bought like 2 albums and maybe 5 other songs total), so none of the songs on my list are iTunes purchases.

From Answers re: the functionality of the Genius:

The first feature, creating playlists, is designed to automatically create playlists of songs you already own that will sound great together. This is a different, more involved process than creating Smart Playlists, since this isn't just based on sorting criteria, but rather claims to actually account for what songs will sound good in what order.

I started reading this thinking it might be informative but stopped when I got to here:

But sadly, as a photographer and videographer, I still run across DJs and music teachers who play songs from their analog CD collection.

I'm tempted to do running polls like this for some of my other Genius playlists; I've got close to 60 of them.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Monday, 27 July 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

I've made a bunch but I always erase them to "make room" for the next.
