i reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally dislike this guy. he's a hack with one trick and it's not even a good trick. he's like the staind of american pop. all of his melodies are so obvious and his sentiments & lyrics so elementary, and all his sappy, gloopy, loping ballads make me want to stop listening to the radio. "apologize" was one of the worst songs, or so i thought, but then he released others. they were all the worst, too. i can recall the melodies of his songs like i can recall the melody to "ring around the rosey", and often his songs, like "love like this" - one of the tiresome and irritating songs ever - are just as childish. i used to like jordin sparks as a radio artist but then she released "battlefield", written by tedder. it is loud and boisterous but cripplingly empty, and it asks the singer to not so much sing but yell, except that what is being yelled is such a paper thin view of emotion and feeling that it's patently ridiculous. also it's a direct rip off of a much better and more famous song. as a fan of pop i almost find it offensive. as if he needed to prove that he was even more idealess than we thought, he also sold kelly clarkson and beyonce the same song. it's like he's trying to become the human embodiment of a cookie cutter. neither are good. none of his productions have ever been interesting and in fact they are becoming exponentially more bland. his songs are weighing down pop radio and i wish he would stop working with r&b artists so he can stop so there will be at least some tedder-free stations on the radio.
i like "bleeding love" a lot but in the context of tedder's career i'm willing to chalk up its greatness to uh.... jesse mccartney! \(o_O)/
anyway thx yall. this has been building inside me. i really dislike ryan tedder and i hope i find some sympathizers http://www.soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headz.gif

The thing that makes "Bleeding Love" stand out is the lyrics, which Jesse McCartney wrote. So basically dude can suck it.

basically there is a line, and the dude from the fray is on the "yes okay i can dig this piano ballad" side and ryan tedder is on the "there is no justice that you have eyeballs but stevie wonder is still blind" side, and on top of it all, the fray guy is the one confined to his own band's songs. (not like i'm itching to hear what the guy from the fray would write for beyonce, im just saying)

that second kristinia debarge single that's a direct rip off of "one step at a time" is a tedder joint, and i like it a lot, aside from the fact that the lyrics are predictably elementary. i like it aesthetically at least.
― air crut (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 July 2009 08:00 (fifteen years ago)
i like this thread. listening to the kelly c single last night was when i realised i actually hated tedder, having given him a bit of a free pass due to working with artists i like. i always knew nothing good could come of the timbaland/onerepublic hook-up (tho).
the weird thing about 'bleeding love' vis-à-vis the rest of tedder's catalogue is that it's quite a restrained song - when i first heard it i was surprised at how restrained leona was, actually. none of the YELLING that characterises so many of his efforts.
― lex pretend, Thursday, 30 July 2009 09:46 (fifteen years ago)
hey I think 'Halo' is great, but hearing 'Already Gone' (which is fine itself) I see that's all down to Beyoncé (and her crazy range) and the synthy bit, which I'm going to assume wasn't Ryan Tedder, so yeah fuck that guy.

Of their singles it's their least offensive. His coldbloodedness about following chart trends produced a listenable "folk"/Arcade Fire hybrid with a good chorus. Clear Channel radio could be suckering me too: I've heard it more often than any song the last six weeks.

forgot "give a little more." "give a little more" is pretty good. "give a little more" is certainly not "this love," "sunday morning," "misery," "harder to breathe," or even "one more night," though. "give a little more" is also not "makes me wonder."
"give a little more" is levine's decent prince impression. "until you're over me" is his best.

― World B Frizzle (rip van wanko), Saturday, 10 January 2015 20:17 (ten years ago)
maroon 5 fascinates me because they're the epitome of a very good pop band that struggled for years with their own celebrity (and the vapidity that implies/entails) before finally capitulating to the dark side. up through their third album they were vehement about being a "real band" and writing all their songs themselves with maybe the occasional help from a (not-hired-gun) friend (i think someone from phantom planet helped with "misery" or something??). and then when that tanked they had a cold introspective few months before returning, scarcely a year later, with a dance album full of benny benassi tunes etc. they ultimately chose mindless commerce, though for a long time they were a band capable of bringing pretty great craft to the uber-mainstream time and again.
anyway, point being, the outtakes from their (pretty crappy) second album are a symptom of that gradual exchange at work. all 6 or 7 of those songs were much stronger than the whole record they failed to make (except "little of your time," which fucking hauls ass in a very concise 2 minutes), and clearly at some point during the process they decided fuck it, we just need to load this thing up with potential hits. "until you're over me" is my favorite of the bunch but there's like 6 or 7 of them and they're all at least very respectable.
back on topic: tedder is so awful (i will happily blame him for "burn," that garbage ellie goulding song) but really both versions of "apologize" stand up as very nice hits from maybe the last period of time american radio had a pretty good batting average.
― soyrev, Saturday, 10 January 2015 20:21 (ten years ago)
hard for me to hear "apologize" as anything other than garbage
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 10 January 2015 20:25 (ten years ago)
they were always about mindless commerce -- they just decided to stop being autonomous about it.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 10 January 2015 20:27 (ten years ago)
Also: "Maroon 5" at this point matter as much to Adam Levine as "10,000 Maniacs" did to Natalie Merchant in 1992.
songs like "this love," "harder to breathe" and "sunday morning" aren't mindless. they're not high art and they're not even necessarily "personal songs" but they're super well written, performed, produced. up through album 3, maroon 5's greatest hits album would've been their critical redemption.
"animals," on the other hand, is fucking mindless.
but yes they've always wanted to be the huge group that they are, i just found their identity issue to be very interesting, esp. given that it produced some improbably great pop songs. and now i'm even more interested in them as a total shitshow sellout act that caved to changing/narrowing market tastes, even though i detest the music now.
― soyrev, Saturday, 10 January 2015 20:36 (ten years ago)
I admire the early stuff from a distance but only love "Makes Me Wonder." I can't get past what a mosquito-sized voice Levine's got and how unsuited it is for balladry.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 10 January 2015 20:44 (ten years ago)
Tedder played himself on an episode of Smash and there was a hilariously awkward scene where Katharine McPhee tried unsuccessfully to say something like 'omg Ryan Tedder, i am the BIGGEST OneRepublic fan' with conviction.
